My friend brought me back a growler from Gilded Otter Breweries claiming this was something I just had to try. And am I ever glad I did!

It poured a nice brown/copper color with no real head. At first aroma, I could pick up hints of caramel and dark malts, with a hint of hops in the background. The taste was wonderful. It had a nice malty caramel taste with hints of toffee with a slight fruitiness. Very complex, but oh, so good! A smooth finish, with some malty aftertaste. The mouthful was nicely carbonated and smooth.

I loved this beer! I would highly recommend it to anyone. At 5.3% ABV, it is a great session beer. I can't wait to go pick up another growler!

In a Growler, transported to my fridge from the brewery by my beer Hero DAVER. Pours dark hazelnut, lifting a nice tiny bubble head and leaving great lacy lace as its enjoyed. The brewery tells me they used saaz hops to create this tasty concoction. Rich and malty, full flavored. Hints of roasted malts, charred fruit and nice drying grainy hops to dry things out. This is a nice brew, makes me want to visit the brewery my self.

draft at the brewpub, Rich malt in the aroma. A little amber colour and some lace. average mouthfeel, grainy. Decent drinkability, but it is a sipper. Fine with food, but not so rich nor tasty on its own. Did not grab me. Unoffensive choice for patrons. I went for the hoppier, stoutier stuff.

Poured a medium brown/amber hue with a finger and a half foamy white head. There was good retention and lacing.

The smell featured a light caramel malt with some yeast esters and an earth hop.

The taste consisted of an earthy smoky malt, some caramel sweetness and a mix of earthy go and yeast spices.

The mouthfeel was of average fullness for the style.

Overall a very tasty and compex alt.

L: Pours a nice amber color with an interesting reddish/pinkish/brown hue at the bottom of the glass. There appears to be a non-existent head but then it pops up with a nice small sized and medium bodied tan colored head and laces the glass very well on the way down.
S: Smells of sweet caramelized malts, sweet lightly toasted malts, and some more bitter roasted malts at the end.
T: Like the aroma, it has a very big malt characteristic with sweet toasted and caramelized malts, more bitter roasted malts, and a nice sweet and clean finish.
M: Very crisp, fresh, refreshing, perfect amount of carbonation.
D: Very drinkable, this growler was done in no time.

A hazy light brown beer with reddish highlights, a small white head and some fair lacing on the glass. Aroma is richly malty, with light roast and floral hop aspects.

Not a bad flavored altbier; again there is good malt character, with touches of Saaz hop bitterness, a light fruitiness, and a hint of roast. Not a huge taste but well balanced and pleasing. The bitterness lingers just a bit in the aftertaste.

Smooth and easy to drink; medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Not exceptional but not bad either. One wonders if this is the same thing the judges tasted when it won awards at the GABF in the past; this brewpub has a reputation for a high level of inconsistency from batch to batch.

A: Picture perfect. Aggressive pour yields a good 1 inch ivory head of cream. Initially murky with a latte color. The color becomes a lustrous dark ruby/hazlenut. Cascades of 1/2 lacing down my pint glass.

S: Hazlenut, caramel malts, and faint grass.

M: Very fine carbonation is suits this beer well giving it a creamy aspect. Soft but unsticky.

T: Huge nuttiness, caramel and noble hops plays well at the end. The flavors could be blended more to help the beer transition better.

This brewery has it's up and downs. In fact, I remember ignoring it for over a year-the beer styles and more disappointingly seemed state and stagnant. This beer had been officially reincarnated.

Brought to good 'ol PA in a growler by a buddy

A - Pours chestnut brown with almost no head. What is there laces nicely though.

S - Dark roasted malts; has a nutty aroma, hints of brown sugar and raw bagel dough

T&M - Caramel malts, very nutty. Carbonation feels minimal. Hints of bread and toasted grains. Finishes dry with a slight sourness.

D - Very nice session beer; I don't think I'll have too much trouble finishing this growler.

I got this beer as a gift from my parents after they visited the Gilded Otter brewpub. This was also my first experience with a growler.

The beer poured a beautiful crisp brown, with no head. With my first smell, i could pick up some caramel and general sweet notes. The taste was amazing. On the first sip I tasted caramel, roasted malts and slight fruitiness. The aftertaste was slightly dry and very 'biscuity', with good carbonation. The mouth feel was very smooth. Each sip left a nice lacing and overall, this beer was excellent. If you live in the Northeast area and love beer, I highly recommend you take a trip to this brewpub.

This brew was the highlight of the meal at the Gilded Otter, this brew poured to a darker brown color with a nice sized white head that had very good retention and left a nice amount of lacing down the side of the glass. As for the aroma, the malts stick out, with caramel highlights and a nice hop scent in the background. The taste was excellent, very smooth with a creamy texture, malt flavors of caramel and some chocolate tones. A nice slight hop flavor at the end that goes nicely. Overall this is a very tasty offering and one I would recommend on a trip to the brewpub.

Enjoyed on tap at the brew pub.
Served as a medium copper colored beer with moderate off-white head.
Smell is swett and caramell, with any hops pushed to the back.
Taste is incredible. Strong caramel and toffee malt combine with a mild dark fruit taste. Hops are present, but very lightly.
Finish is smooth and refreshing with the strong malt character leaving a nice taste in the mouth.
What a super beer. Easy to drink, flavorful, and refreshing.

Clear chestnut topped by a thin, fine cap of white bubbles. Nice lacing and good retention. Aromas of dark malts, toffee, and mild roast were accompanied by faint hop leaf. Roasty, caramel sweetness was balanced by a solid bitterness. Leafy hops and toffee kicked in at the mid, followed by a fairly quick (nearly) cocoa finish. Refined texture with a bit of creaminess, medium bodied. The moderately low carbonation was well-integrated. I really enjoyed this beer - it was my favourite from Gilded Otter. Everything came together really well and it seems like a beer I could drink all night.

Pours a cloudy, dark amber/ruby with a half inch head after a vigorous pour into my favorite glass tankard. Light beige head recedes to a coating, and a swirl leaves persistent lace. It's a pretty beer.

Nose is a perfume of well aged and mellow aromas, they mix into a blend that is hard to define, there is sweet floral, edges of herbosity, and an almost-hidden fruitiness underneath, no alcohol scent.

The front of the sip is a mellow yet robust (through multiple sips I am trying to resolve the paradox of it) blend of deliciousness, a well crafted mix of slightly sour, slightly sweet, slightly bitter/.herbal/earthy, completely aged and blended tastes wrapped in a unifying subtle fruitiness that, like the smell, is hard to define, and quite delicious.

Mouthfeel is excellent, just right, if I was forced to pick a fault it would be a bit thin, but as I've been drinking this to the bottom of the cup, it has become more an asset than a detriment. A definite session beer. I recommend this to all.

(From notes)

A - Poured with a clear orange-brown color that was quite intriguing; half-finger of lightly tan head that had nice retention.

S - Bready; earthy; biscuity; some sweetness

T - Earthy hoppiness; dark fruits and fresh bread; minty; some sweetness at the end like the nose; mineral finish

M - Ligther; tight carbonation

D - Very, very good drinking. Accessible, but interesting, and this could be one fantastic session brew.

Overall, great take on the style and a really nice tasting brew.

Altbier not being one of my favorite styles, I am willing to try anything at least once... Especially anything brewed by the Otter. They've won a couple of medals at the GABF with this brew so I figured it can't be all that bad. The beer has a really strong malt scent to it when served. There was a little caramel in the background but it was much more enjoyable than I would have thought. I would guess that this is one of their more popular beers and I can understand why. This is more of a beer that you sit back and enjoy as opposed to one that you can consume large amounts of on a hot summer day. I would definitely try this again.
