First had: on tap at Blue Mountain, Afton, VA

Straw-yellow pour, kristal clear, lively carbonation, topped with a fizzy white head. In the nose, toasted wheat, light banana esters, light spice, herbal hops. Mild taste, pale malts, toasted grains, light banana/clove, herbal hop notes. Pretty standard for the style. Light body, simple and drinkable, just not something I'd get a full pour of.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a rich golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is very faint, almost odorless. A very light aroma of banana, Taste is mild, wheat, banana, refreshing but subdued. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall not a bad beer, but seems to be lacking in character.

A - Pours a slighly hazy (almost clear), translucent yellowish color. White head has minimal rentntion.

S - Smells of yeast, clean scent, and fresh bread dough.

T - Faint hints of banna, clove, phenols... lots of yeast.

M - Smooth, moderate mouthfeel. Typlcal for the style.

D - Overall this beer lack complexity and depth. It doesn't really do anything for more. It's a decent session beer, but even falls chort of my standard for that purpose.

A: Poured from draft into pint glass. A single
finger head with active carbonation. A light
maize color. Not a cloud in the sky for this
transparent brew.

S: Virtually odorless save for a the slightest
hints of alcohol/malt.

T: Not as candy and bananas as I had expected
from reading other reviews and basic
expectations of the style. There is a herbal
taste on the back of the tongue and the
requisite bananas and sweetness are present
but not overly so.

M/D: This is a thin beer with little body and
comes in a little short on overall
character. I will be much more prone to
choose a good hefe or wit over this version
of the krystal.

Poured from the bottle into a wheat ale glass.

Classic large soapy and very big white rocking Hefe making head out of the bottle. Huge soapy retention that just doesn't go anywhere. A bit of a dark amber orange and slightly dull yellow body, considerably darker than most but not very clear, but with matching rising plentiful carbonation. Pretty solid.

Nose is real nice to match. Some mild clove spice, chewy wheat malt, and there's an interesting estery note to this that is more like cherry or red fruit, than the classic bubblegum and banana. Really nice I dig this not sure where this is going.

Palate seems to match the cherry fruit quality from the nose. Malt density is lacking with a bit of a watery finish, but some of the cherry fruit manages to perkelate in the mid palate. Finish is also a bit metallic and has a bit of a tin aftertaste. Warmth gives a bit more clove and classic hefe character, with some subdued bitterness.

It's not bad, but the metallic and tin notes on it are a bit too noticeable and particularly take away my enjoyment of what starts out to be a pretty decent brew.

Served as part of a sampler at the brewery in Afton, VA along w/ five other beers (four others brewed there, and one guest beer).

Appearance was very nice, crisp, clear, golden, slightly bubbly, and almost no head, quickly disappearing lacing.

Smell was sweet and fruity, light citrus notes, esters very prevalent - banana, I believe, as well as cloves.

Taste was initially very nice, sweet and crisp, with a refreshing, clean aftertaste - just as in the nose, notes of banana and cloves were prominent.

Mouthfeel was decent, minimal carbonation, crisp, and very light.

Drinkability is not terribly great, however - after finishing with the sampler, I ordered this beer, and found the taste to diminish rather quickly with time, to where I wasn't really enjoying the beer by the time I was halfway through it. Never a good sign. However, it remains an interesting - if typical - attempt at the style.

Appearance: light golden amber, thin Lacey head, and quite clear for this filtered wheat.

Smell: yeast with hints of banana, honey, and clove

Taste: wheat malty, slight citrus

Drinkability is good. The body is medium with a little carbonation. I had this in a bottle as well poured into a pint glass.

12 oz bottle poured into glass

A: Poured pretty clear to start with good looking carbonation. Once I swirled the remaining brew and poured the rest it got nice and cloudy. Color was on the golden side with about 1/2 a fingers worth of head that settled to a thin layer with very little lacing.

S: I'm getting the average stuff.... Citrus, banana esters, and a touch of clove.

T: I'm getting a mix of wheat and citrus right up front with touches of banana and clove at the finish. Very clean

M: Light bodied, nicely carbonated, dryer than I thought it might be. Overall very clean.

D: Pretty average for the style. Worth looking for in the VA.

Pours a clear golden with a rocky head. Good retention.

Aroma is wheat beer like. Yeasty, some notes of citrus, banana.

Taste is wheat beer like...yeasty and citrusy and banana.

Mouthfeel is okay. I think its too watered down. Taste is fine, but the finish makes it have the consistency of water. Even though wheats are supposed to be light, they shouldn't be this thin. Flavor profile is good, though, and it still delivers. Drinkable.

Reviewed from notes.

Pours a very light straw color that would be transparent but for the bit of yeasty haze. White head and a bit of lacing. Nose brings some banana and clove alongside some soft wheat. Taste consists of very faint German yeast and a mild sweetness. Pretty light mouthfeel with a good dose of carbonation. Nothing really stands out about this beer, but it drinks pretty well overall.

From 12oz bottle to Bruges hybrid glass on 2/7/12
*From notes

A: Clean orange-yellow. A good pour yields a soapy looking one finger white head. Not a ton of retention, and the lacing is a bit meager.

S: Minty, with a big dose of garden box herbs and lavender.

T: Kolsch-like earth hits first. This leads to the mid, where the wheat quality arrives and supplies the legs upon which the beer stands. The finish reveals a touch of lemon.

M: Rough and a bit sharp, yet it's quite quaffable and easy to put back.

O: Nice session style wheat based beer here. Blue Mountain's Rockfish Wheat isn't their best brew, but it's none the less a tasty summer thirst quencher, and something I always enjoy sharing with friends.

Appearance: light yellow in color with a 1/2" head that breaks apart quickly to a spotty surface foam. Some lace develops.

Smell: soft wheat malt tones and a hint of banana comes through to the nose.

Taste: slightly grainy malt profile with soft banana, lemon zest, hints of pears, and a bit of clove showing up late. Bitterness is mild.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied. Crisp throughout with some light dryness late.

Drinkability: not a bad beer overall and it was easy to quaff. Somewhat refreshing too. Worth a try.

a: allagash weizen glass, one-finger eggshell white head shows good retention, the beer is a clear orange-amber in color

s: full, aromatic wheat body with mild to moderate banana esters and clove phenols, delicately spicy noble hops, a glimpse of guava and other tropical fruits, nice - but some more yeast influence would really help this one out

m: carbonation on the lighter side of medium, light-medium body, the coarse carbonation kinda clashes with the thicker (for a wheat anyway) body

t: wheat body with a light barley presence and some kinda apple-pear-white fig thing going on, underripe banana, I liked this much more on previous tastings - but somethings missing here, it's just kinda...bland, a light dusting of clove in the finish

d: just fine

my first domestic kristalweizen, best by 9/2009, went through a six-pack before realizing I hadn't rated, so I picked up a single from Norm's in Vienna to get that karma

Swirled the yeas and got a thick looking orange to orange amber. Looked like a tropical fruit punch. white head of 2 fingers that receded quickly leaving barely any lacing. On the second pour, the head war more massive. % fingers in my tall Schneider Weisse glass. It was considerably less slow to fall as well. Becoming more chunky and leaving decent lacing.

Toasted malt with a hint of cherry and banana. On the 2nd pour, the initial aroma was of bubblegum and cloves were more apparent.

Banana and cherry are both more evident on the tongue. Faint clove with a lemony tartness typical of the wheat malt. Cloves become bolder in the end.

Medium full in body. Pretty smooth with surprising warmth. Moderately sticky and a bit drying.

A very good summer brew. Refreshing, with plenty going on to maintain one's interest. I wouldn't hesitate to try it again.

Another bottle from The Friendly Greek Bottle Shop being sent on its way to the recycling bin by way of my glass. I dedicate this review to the late Isaac Hayes, who, in his recurring role of Gandolph Fitch on "The Rockford Files" always mispronounced the titular character's name as "Rockfish" as in, "Hey, Rockfish, I need some help and I got nobody else to turn to."

From the bottle: "Summer Weiss Beer"; "You hold in your hand bottled summer sun. Rockfish Wheat has the unique flavor created by the yeast that has made Bavarian-style hefeweizens summer favorite of the beer world. Pour half, swirl to rouse the yeast, pour the rest and enjoy! ... [undersigned] Taylor Smack, Brewmaster"; "Proudly brewed and bottled in the heart of Virginia."

I used an agitated pour once I realized that this was actually a Hefeweizen, vice a Kristalweizen and so I got a finger of tawny head that fell pretty quickly. Color was a murky deep-amber (SRM = 13). Nose smelled like banana bread, simply put. Mouthfeel was medium and the taste was not as banana-like as I had girded myself for, based on the nose. Instead, it was much more bready than any Hefeweizen I can remember, but I was not getting much in the way of clove esters. Finish was semi-dry, not sweet at all and on the extreme finish, I got a slight tang from the yeast, but still not what I had expected. I usually disdain Hefeweizens for their banana esters, but this was definitely to my liking. YMMV.

A - A finger and a half of creamy and fluffy white head which displays moderate retention but ultimately fades to an appealing lace... Terrific coloring - a rich copper toffee... Some minor moderate carbonation rises throughout...

S - Subtle but quite enjoyable... Subtle wheat... Subtle yeast... Malt in the form of caramel and toffee... Minor fruity and floral accents....

T - Subdued wheat character... Some minor caramel, butter, and toffee notes... A hint of banana...

M - Some minor biting carbonation on the tongue to start... Very smooth... Very even... Fills mouth fully... A bit on the dry side... Medium bodied and quite sturdy by wheat beer standards...

D - A very solid offering and introduction to Blue Mountain Brewery... Would gladly welcome to my beer fridge in the future... A slightly maltier and sweet wheat beer which is quite welcomed by this BA...

Giving this a fresh review, as I don't feel giving one from the sampler was reasonable, so now it's being done from a standard 12 oz. bottle.

A: A clean looking, light golden blonde. Head retains alright, not a lot of lacing.

S: Malts, cloves, sweetgrass. Some bubblegum aromas that float around quite nicely.

T: Bubblegum, clove, and a grassiness. Banana as it approaches the finish, but quite mild. A touch of bitterness towards the finish that seems a little out of place, but still a decent experience overall.

M + D: A little sticky, but not so much as to really damper the experience. As it gets warmer, this has a little more of a draw, and I can see myself having it a few times over the summer. It may start to seem a little bit thick after a few, though.

Pours a deep golden straw-like color, bordering on orange with a thin white head that quickly disappears to leave almost no lacing.

Very nice aromas of banana, clove, and wheat – very simple, efficient, and to the point.

Flavors are similar to the aroma offering banana, clove, yeast, and a touch of spice.

Mouthfeel is medium to the medium-light side with medium carbonation and a drying white wine-like finish.

This beer is very true to style and to the point. A very nice, simple example of the style.

Pours a hazy golden color with a delicately bubbly white head. Head retention is about average, minimal retention. The aroma is fairly mild...yeasty and some wheat bitterness.

Taste is pretty good!!!! The yeast and wheat bitterness are up front. Cloves and lemon take a back seat.

This beer is crisp, refreshing and light. Perfect for a warm day.

Overall a good take on this style. Nice.

Bright pumpkin with 24-karat gold edges. True to its style, the beer is perfectly clear. In fact, there aren't even many bubbles disturbing the placidity of the liquid. The ecru hued head looks good enough, managing to stick to the glass in several spots like marshmallow cream.

The nose, although acceptable, isn't a barnburner. Since a lot of the yeasty goodness is filtered out, kristalweizens tend not to be aroma bombs. There's a pleasant fruitiness emanating from the glass that *might* be banana-like if I use my imagination.

Rockfish Wheat actually has a fair amount of flavor. I've had several hefeweizens that didn't deliver this much fruit and spice. It's also more malty than the style average and tastes bigger as a result. A hint of alcohol is contributing to that impression as well. I'd have guessed the ABV at least one percentage point higher.

This stuff would probably be killer if unfiltered. That is, if it had more fruit and spice. The (hefeweizen) banan-o-meter score is 2.0/4.0. Not too shabby, considering. Spicy clove and white pepper, in combination with an alcohol smack and tickle, gives the back end a bracing quality that keeps the drinker fully engaged. RW seems like more of a beer geek beer than a mass appeal one.

The mouthfeel reflects the ingredients. In other words, it's on the chubby side (for the style), maintains its structure throughout, and has enough carbonation to keep things hopping through the final ounce. Well done.

I love drinking previously unheard of beer from previously unheard of craft breweries. Especially when they're as good as Rockfish Wheat. For my money, when it comes to beer, aggressiveness beats timidity almost every time. Thanks ahatcher78.

Picked this beer up on a recent trip to Virginia. Recommended on the front of the bottle, "...pour half, swirl to rouse the yeast, pour the rest and enjoy!"
A: Beer pours a light copper color. Pretty surprised to get no head on it despite the fairly aggressive pour. I was expected a nice foamy head on it being a Weiss beer.
S: Smell is what you'd expect from the style. Somewhat bland but inviting.
T: Now that is good. Very fresh tasting, with a nice bready yeastiness to it. I get a little bit of citrus, slight lemon, full creaminess from the wheat.
MF: Again, real good. Nice carb. Very easy drinking. Creamy yet crisp. Full bodied, yet so light.
O: I'm really digging this beer and everything Blue Mountain is throwing at me with this brew. I really dig the labeling, the suggestion and description on the front of the bottle, the Plato, IBUs and ABV, the easy to read "enjoy by" date on the label. And the beer lives up to what they claim it to be, "bottled summer sun". How can you not be a fan of this brewery and their beers?

A: Golden, crystal clear, no head/lacing.

S: Citrus, lemon, floral, pine, sweet smell. Overall a nice strong aroma that was quite pleasant.

M: Medium to light bodied, low carbonation.

T: More malty then bitter, allowing for sweetness of the malt to come through. Tastes include caramel, wheat, slight grapefruit and pine.

O: A solid brew that is VERY drinkable, especially in the hot summer months. With the little to no bitterness, makes for a sweeter beer. Definitely would recommend this to others, and thanks Wendell for the delivery!!

Served on-tap in a weizen glass -- BMB has a great glassware arsenal!

A: Slightly hazy orangy-gold with tall off-white head and plenty of lace

S: Soft banana esters, citrus twang of the wheat, and clove

T: Smooth with the typical wheaty tanginess and good blend of fruity sweetness and solid yeast character

M: Very quenching with a little dryness in the finish but very smooth and nicely carbonated.

D: I don't usually go for wheat beers, but I sniffed my friend's sample and went with it because of the softness of the aromas. I was very pleasantly surprised -- I think I will go for round two on my next visit to BMB.

S: wheat, banana. simple but right on for the style.

T: wheat, banana dominate. very flavorfulbut simple. Not much to say about it.

M: light to medium body and moderate carbonation.

Overall: very drinkable, simple.
