Pours into a chalice a burnt orange infused lighter aber shade with a creamy off white head that leaves a nice full ring of lace as it settles.Alot of dark fruit in the nose along with a bit of caramel toffee and mild phenol spice.A little yeasty on the palate with a decent amount of clove spice to go along with alcohol dipped dark fruit and some breadiness in the finish.Not bad maybe a little heavy heanded in the yeast flavors but it's a nice sipping dubbel.

Twelve ounce bottle, thanks to mntlover, pours a murky brown with a creamy beige head that retains well at two fingers. Sheets and curtains of lace adorn the goblet.

Aroma of toasted caramel and herbal and citrusy hops.

Medium body supports a moderate carbonation.

Taste has a nutty, toasted brown bread maltiness that is accented by bitter herbal hops. Not really dry, and the hops are balanced well by a pronounced toasty malt profile. Hints of dark dried fruits with a kiss of dark chocolate add plenty of depth. More of a hops presence than I'm accustomed to for this style.

Very drinkable if you appreciate a hops presence in a Dubbel.

Blue Mountain- Evil 8

A- Dark murky brown with a very thick frothy head. Thick messy lacing.
S- Very sweet brown sugar, citrus, roasted malt, and bread.
T- Thick sweet sugar/ brown sugar. Bread crust, orange rind, cherries, licorice, pepper, and herbal Ricolah cough drops.
M- Very thick and very sweet. Big maltiness throughout with a touch of alc. poking through.

Overall- A good nightcap type of beer. Very sweet though.

12 oz. bottle into a Brooklyn tulip.

Appearance: a frothy off-white head covers this cherry-colored brew, or maybe a darker amber with a bit of haziness to it. Nice retention and lacing.

Smell: A bit of nice dark fruit seems to be there, but there's a weird charred or roasted malt thing going on here, almost like a RIS, that takes away from it and lends a kind of odd character to the aroma. Unless it's just way over-hopped, which I also get a sense of possible. But something's off.

Taste: The taste is a bit better, sans charred malt or over-hopping, but still I feel like the true essence of the Dubbel is just too buried right now. Finish is herbal, bitter, with decent dark fruits coming through, then the raucous pungency of over-charring or over-hopping. I've said it too much...

Mouthfeel: Nice and creamy with good carbonation and a medium body. Along with nice coating sans being cloying.

Drinkability: There's a more rough-around-the-edges aspect of this brew that I just can't get around. It's almost over-hopped or there was some kind of charred or roasted malt that was used that doesn't seem to let the seemingly authentic Belgian flavor through. Glad I only got a single bottle overall. Maybe some age will do something?

Enjoy by August 2010 (I am, just barely)

Poured into a Chimay goblet (branded glassware...sue me). So far, so Belgian--the light tan head is a creamy one. Not ultra thick but lasts a good while. The color is a burgundy that can't decide if it's leaning toward a leathery brown or rusty red. Lots of lace. Very dubbel-ish, so Blue Mountain got this part of it down.

Mostly fruity nose, lots of cherry, plum and grape/raisin, slightly musty and very faint trace of mineral. Not much sign of the yeast, but then the label says "a unique strain of brewers' yeast," so maybe they didn't even use an authentic Belgian strain. Doesn't smell like they did.

Although the flavor is big and has complexity, things are just a tad off balance. But, I'm not really minding that much, as this is rather bold, no doubt interesting, and very flavorful. Clearly American in its one-two punch approach, let's look at it for what it is: grassy hop bitterness is unexpected but does well here; milk chocolate spikes out more than in typical Belgian dubbels; dark herbal tea; hints of brown sugar; lots of juicy darker fruits (par for the course); alcohol is a touch medicinal; mineral, tartness and greenness/astringency in the finish.

Very smooth texture here, much like a dubbel from the homeland, even if the bitterness in the flavor says otherwise. I mean, reallly smooth. Silky, creamy, round, robust body. Mmmm.

So, okay, not exactly a doppelganger for the real Belgian dubbel, but a cool American approximation. All but the most insane style-fascists will get something out of this. How is it I've lived in Virginia for 9 years and am just discovering this rather excellent brewery? (Rhetorical question, people...I don't expect you to have the answer. I sure don't.)

consumed during 2nd half of ND-Nevada. paired with some local cheese of the goat

appearance: poured into an unmarked chalice, very nice looking...cola-mahogany body, creamy beige cap with full retention. natural light reveals garnet hues

smell: aroma is well within expectations of the style - earthy sweet malts, raisin and brown sugar crusted dates, plum, pruins, vanilla

taste: pretty acceptable american dubbel - not too heavy, plum and pruins provide nice sweet flavors, smooth malt base, brown sugar, dates, raisin.

mouthfeel: medium body, alcohol is slightly felt, creamy, active carbonation creates a lively mouthfeel

drinkability: good

Coffee black color poured from a 12 OZ bottle into a pint glass. Has a small oft white colored head. Has a porter flavor. Not bad at all.

12 oz bottle into a goblet.

Pours a DEEP clear amber, with a finger of frothy light caramel colored head. Creamy wisps coat the surface, staying rich, and slathering the sides of the glass with spotty lace. The aroma is sugary dough, toffee, cherries & oranges, deep yeast, a bit of spice, and some light heat. Nice.

The taste is bread, sugar, fruity esters, candy, and spice. Bitterness and dusty yeast finish this with a steady spicy bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a bubbly and lively carbonation up front, that then gets a little sharper towards the back. This nicely meshes well with the moderately intense finish on this. Alcohol is fairly well hid for the most part.

This was solid. Nothing really earth shattering in the flavor department, but I did like that this was a little more hop forward than you would expect for the style. A pleasant sipper.

S = I picked up dark fruit with notes of caramel and toasted biscuit.

T = Nice maltiness with caramel coming through. There was a slight bitterness in the end, but once it disappeared, I was left with a toasted biscuit finish.

MF = Moderate carbonation and creamy.

Overall, I felt this was a nicely balanced Belgian-Style Dubbel and my hat is off to brewmaster Taylor Smack.

S: Caramel candy with some breadiness, some cinnamon and clove, faint cardamom.

L: Fairly clear, reddish brown, white creamy head that dissipates.

T: Slight fruitiness with belgian yeast flavors up front. Candy sweet malt with medium bitterness, spicy. Finishes semi-sweet with additional clove and cardamom spiciness.

M: Medium bodied, medium low carbonation. Alcohol slightly noticeable.

Not bad, a little sweet for the style, but decent flavors all around.

Beer review #666, poured into a snifter

A- pours a chestnut brown color with a creamy light cream colored head that retains long after the pour, leaving some lace behind

S- candied dark fruit, buiscity malt, dark cherry juice and caramel

T- dark cherry flavor with a slight tartness, sugary malt that finishes buiscuity with some herbal notes

M- medium body with light carb, slightly foamy mouthfeel with a crisp, dry finish

O- well constructed and easy to drink, doesn't compare to the world class Belgian examples but definitely worth a try

Pours a slightly viscous deep nearly black with a medium dark tan head. Aroma and Taste is sweet dark toasted malt, Belgian yeast, some notes of dark dried fruit, plums raisins mild bitterness. A medium body, smooth mouth feel on the palate with mild carbonation. Finishes with a sweet dark mild roasted caramel malt, notes of dark dried plummy fruit and raisin a bit of tart Belgian yeast with a mild bitterness on the end. Overall a very nice tasty drinking brew.

Poured dark ruby red with a good head.

Nice aroma of floral and spice lets me know it is a Belgian style; but taste is more malty and there is plenty of bitterness at the end. Everything in balance, very drinkable: perhaps to much so for the alcohol, so is that the Evil part?

P- Grape and Gourmet in Va Beach

A- a foamy 2 finger head. Quite carbonated as i pour the brew. A beautiful stick to my pint as well. Tand colored head. A dark red almost light brown opaque color.

S- biscuits, dark candied fruit and belgian yeast. Also get aromas of cherry and some other pronounced fruit.

T- Bitter hops that taste of dark candied fruit. The yeast and the fruit combine in the mouth to make it a bittersweet taste.

M- carbonated bitter fruit. Feels like drinking champagne because of the carbonation.

D- This bad boy is heavy but light on abv. It is very filling and one or two of these would be enough but you wouldnt be drunk. Id buy a sixer of this for a weekend.

a: into my Piraat snifter, modest beige head over a deep chestnut colored ale, great retention and light lacing

s: complex sugars and smooth caramelized malts with an undercurrent of belgian yeast, dark fig and raisin cake with toasted nuts, delicate roast in the back and glimpses of powdered cocoa and spicy root, light booze, hops give herbal and dried citrus aromas, very nice

m: carbonation on the high side of medium, delicate prickliness, medium body

t: lightly caramelized and fruity belgian malt body with a toasted undercurrent, generous hopping adds a nice counterpoint but doesn't overwhelm given its mild herbal character, starts with a light sweetness and finishes dry with lingering flavors of yeast and papery hops

d: easy, a solid American example of a style where many tend to be lackluster and uninteresting

single bottle from Grape & Gourmet, Virginia Beach, VA...I've really been enjoying Blue Mountain's stuff since they started making it around the northern part of the state, and look forward to visiting the brewery sometime in the near future

Only thing I was unaware of was the availability, so this may change.

A: Pours a very deep murky brown, with red highlights, letting just the littlest bit of light through. Head is thick and frothy, lasting forever. Very nice.

S: Bready, some caramels and raisiny scents. A touch of hops come through on a deep sniff. A complex, but not overpowering aroma.

T: Quite a nice balance through the body... quite similar to the aroma, with the malty bread-like, caramel tastes. A note of hops and darker fruits, with an added spicy alcohol note on the finish. Becomes maybe just a tad sweet on the overall finish, but not too badly. A touch of a medicinal taste in there that seems a little out of place.

M: A nice, full, and round body... a little on the sticky syrup side, but again, not horribly bad at all.

D: This is a good effort from this newcomer brewery... perhaps not quite as spectacular as their others, but still a decent abbey-style ale, nonetheless. For its class, it has quite the competition, but it comes out alright. I'm glad I got 6, and look forward to it again on tap, as well.

Pours dark brown with a 1 1/2 finger tannish head that recedes leaving light lacing and a ring around the glass.. Held up to a light, the beer develops a reddish hue that's almost vinous.

Dark chocolate and caramel. Coffee and dark fruits. Smokey.

Sweet burnt malt with dark fruit and spice.

Medium full in body with both light pepper and light syrup. Smoothly warming.

Very pleasant and tasty. A good winter warmer.

Poured into a goblet.

4.0 A: Clear very dark brown color. One finger of mostly creamy head with average retention and a decent amount of lacing.

4.0 S: Tons and tons of pepper. Touches of clove as well, but mainly pepper. Mildly sweet with the slightest touches of tobacco and raisin. Belgian yeastiness Simple, but very pleasant.

4.0 T: Tobacco and raisin are a bit stronger in the taste. Fruity plum also makes an appearance. Surprisingly bitter for a dubbel, but not distratctingly so. Pepper is there again in volumes, but not nearly as strong as in the nose. Mild clove again. Hops and yeast add a nice earthy character.

4.5 M: Lighter medium body. Spritzy Belgian carbonation. Smooth with an earthy/tobacco aftertaste.

4.0 D: Not a bad brew. Great interpretation of an earthier dubbel.

Pours a murky brown reddish color with a smaller brownish head that falls quick to a ring some lace left behind.

Aroma is Toasted biscuity malt, caramel touches of dark fruits light green hop aromas.

Taste is like aroma biscuit malts lightly toasted, some caramel that lingers with fruits appearing finishes with some grassy hops. Over all a good local attempt. Not quite as malty as i would like little more hops then necessary for the style then I am use too. Would recommend trying anything local, even though its not great its not bad either.

Mouthfeel is medium smooth except for touches of carbonation appearing, but not over done as some belgian's.

Drinability is good its enjoyable enough wouldn't replace my St. Bernardus but worth a shot in my opinion.

a - dark purple/brown hue with minimal head and retention. Disappointing for the style.

S - there it is the dubbel belgian is back. Very nice complex scents of fig, floral and spice. very good for an american made dubbel

Taste - Very suprisingly good and well represented for the style. Tastes like is smells. At 7.7% its very easy to drink and seems alot lighter than it is.

Mouthfeel - Feels watery and light for the style.

Overall - I think this is a very good American attempt at a complicated to duplicate Belgian style. I tip my hat to Blue Mountain. I thought this was quite impressive effort and well crafted.

pours a deep redish brown. tan head, smells of roasted malt, fruit, and some light medicinal notes. tastes of thick roasted malty goodness, chocolate covered fruit and toffee. the mouthfeel is a little too affected by the the carbonation. I like my dubbels smoother, but this is a solid american rendition. not too shabby. I'd drink it again. I do hope they make some improvements though. IT has a ton of potential to be much better. Bottle conditioning might help...

The Evil 8 is a fine dubbel ale that earns it's best rating from me for the smell. It smells lovely off the tap and teh aroma brings a very satisfying drinking experience. That being said I think more than 2 or 3 of these in an evening would be way too much for me. The Evil 8 carries a light head and laces a little in the glass. The taste is certainly Belgian but not too overwhelming. I think it is a good entry to the world of American made Belgian style beers. I look forward to enjoying it at home in the bottle as well. Overall another winner from Blue Mountain.

Pours a rich chestnut brown with minimal rings of off-white lacing. Scent is yeasty with notes of prune, fig and peppery spice, brown sugary sweetness. Taste starts off sweet and bready, dark fruits come through along with mild notes of roast, finishes with a good bit of peppery spice. Medium bodied, lightly coating sweetness. A nice beer that differs from other dubbels in a few different areas.

Served on-tap at Blue Mountain Brewery in Afton, VA

A: Pours a relatively clear medium to dark garnet reddish brown in color with some light to moderate amounts of visible carbonation and ruby red highlights. The beer has a finger tall creamy light beige head that slowly reduces to a thin film covering the surface of the beer with a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate to significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of malts with some dark fruit sweetness (fig really stands out for me) with some lighter amounts of spices (cinnamon and clove) and just a hint of floral hops. There is only a touch of the traditional Belgian yeast aromas.

T: Upfront there are some dark fruit malts flavors with fig standing out and moderate amounts of candi sugar contributing to the sweetness. There are lighter notes of spices - cinnamon and clove - as well as Belgian yeast. Very light hints of floral hops which contribute no bitterness.

M: Medium bodied with light to moderate amounts of carbonation. Light amounts of alcohol heat in the finish.

O: Nice amounts of complexity and traditional Dubbel flavors are present in this brew and the alcohol is pretty well hidden in most aspects. I enjoyed this brew and would suggest that it is worth trying for most folks. I like the spice elements with the cinnamon and clove, though I might have detected a hint of cardamon but that was really buried in the aftertaste and well after I finished the beer.
