A: Beautiful dark auburn color. Approximately 1 finger's width of head has a moderate retention and leaves only a little bit of lacing.

S: Toasty and sweet. Lots of caramel malts, bready, and a little bit of spicy hops. Good smelling beer.

T: Lots of flavor in this beer. Sweet toffee, biscuity, with maple syrup and some dark fruits. The taste is quite sweet at first, and it is not quite balanced out on the finished by the hops, which do add a nice spiciness to the finish. The alcohol pervades throughout, thought it is fairly well restrained with the heavy dose of flavors.

M: Fairly heavy, syrupy body. The carbonation is moderate, and doesn't do much to hold back the syrup, which makes it a little cloying.

O: A really nice winter beer. The flavors are big and bold and sweet and there are a lot of them. It can get a little sweet, and I would never want more than a bottle. Good to split.

A couple of friends who only marginally know something about be laid this retired gem on me. Rock on!

Served in a Stone IRS snifter.

Mild thud of the cork.

A: Poured pretty much a pumpkin orange, extremely cloudy, and with a slight, 1/6 finger head that stuck around for a bit.

S: Muted, yet effective. Very musty, Germanic scent, with a bit of Pixie Stick dust sprinkled about. I don't think this is going to be sweet though.

T: Nope, this was pretty sweet, but it was wasn't cloying and was actually pretty tasty. The sweetness hit hard upfront, but it died off very effectively after the first palate hit. Totally malty in nature, with the Hallertau very prevalent. but there was nothing dull about this.

M: Uniquely sweet would be the best descriptor here. Hell, this is an Imperial beer, demanding an Imperial palate. The carbonation was low as it should have been and the sweetness fell off the palate into pure flavor rather quickly.

O: I've never experienced and Imperial Maibock before. Blue Mountain nailed it. Please consider bringing this one back in the future!

They call it a blonde triplebock, but until BA recognizes that classification, I'm going to have to call it a doppelbock. Served out of a growler in to a snifter.

Appearance: Pours a bright, radiant copper, a crystalline amber, very clear, showcasing dozens of sparkling bright streams of effervescence, mercurial and lively. They rise upwards to an initial one finger of nearly pure white head, but the retention is alarmingly poor, rendering the fluffy albumen top to a thin, barely existent collar and a dash of surface lacing inside thirty seconds. There's not too much else to say about the appearance - there's no lacing of which to speak on the sides of the glass and soon none on the surface, and the collar ultimately fades away entirely. It's probably about what you'd expect from a lightly hopped, high abv% brew.

Aroma: Light, estery, and fruity, relatively clean and a little crisp. The malts are crackery and light, though the nose is definitely dominated by sweet, light, macerated fruits. Peaches and mango mingle with honey, raw sugar-encrusted pineapple, fresh cherries, and faint grassy hops. It's intense, pleasant, but not overwhelmingly complex.

Taste: What a blonde triplebock should taste like (right?). For real though, this is a bit of a developing style (lightly or un-kilned lager beers of great strength), and this is one of the better ones I've had. Too often, they can get sticky, syrupy, or cloying, or the lagering reveals a number of unpleasant estery chemical notes that don't drop out. This one has neither of those problems, fortunately. Simple malts suggest honey, biscuits, only faint traces of roast, and some raw, cidery sugary notes reminiscent of unfiltered brown sugar. The real dominant presence here is light, tropical fruits, pithy oranges, mango, peaches. It's that wonderful raw, simple fruityness that comes from a combination of heavy lagering and simple sugars being yeasted up. A mild, faint hop bitterness lends a slight grassyness to things that doesn't come close to balancing the residual sugars, though it doesn't really need to - they're well enough attenuated (what with the 12% and all) that the balance between sweetness and cidery dryness is definitely present. Speaking of the 12%, it's an afterthought for all practical purposes, the spiciness and estery notes buried beneath the sweetness and fruity notes, respectively.

Mouthfeel: A fantastic mouth on this one. The body is thick, heavy, fat, but not sticky or cloying by virtue of the balance in the flavor. But the lively carbonation visible above renders thickness light and fluffy, thick but not heavy on the tongue. It's velvety smooth, and has enough lift that it achieves a rare balance.

Drinkability: You know, they say this one is 12%, but it doesn't feel it. It also doesn't taste like it, because if this one is indeed 12%, it's one of the best hidden alcohol quantities (volumes) I've ever experienced, buried underneaths sweet biscuity malts and and long macerated tropical and stone fruits. This type of beer - that is, a blonde, high abv% doppelbock - is one that's being tried by Mikkeller, in the style of Samichlaus (though not that extreme), and what's absolutely fantastic is that a beer style (or substyle) that I've previously only tried imported from Austria or wherever-the-hell Mikkeller is brewing/brewed at any given time has been produced right down the street in central VA. A great winter sipper, not quite the dark, malty lagered bomb that might really hit the spot come a toasty cold night, but one I'm highly appreciative of.

A- Deep golden color, similar to honey. Foamy white head that settles quickly, but leaves some sticky lacing behind.

S- Sweet apricots, sweet bread, hints of citrus, doughy yeast.

T- Very sweet up front, with lots of the fruity flavors coming through. Bready yeast, almost like a sweet bread. Noble hops come through nicely.

M- Full bodied, full flavored, medium carbonation, somewhat sticky, but crisp.

O- Very nice beer. Like a bock on steroids. Tons of flavors, but not muddled at all.

10%ABV. per bottle label.Best by May 2013.Picked this at Bestway this week along with it's "sister" beer Blitzen.Poured into a 1/2 liter stein a clear deep bronze with a large fluffy white crown that settles into a frothy mass.Bready pale malt aromas along with some caramel sweetness wich makes for a sweet bread aroma,a mild shot of spicy hops linger.A full but more mellow feel to beer makes it easy in the mouth and more drinkable.A beefed up pale bock on the palate with a hefty shot of caramel and toasty dough,a little hot after awhile but the spicy hops also show thru more as I drink more.to me this is more of a Helles bock in nature, with its aromas,color,flavor,etc....It's pretty damn good but it packs a punch,I make take a long nap after drinking this.

A: This poured a hazy dark gold with a little light tan head.
S: It smelled like salty butter scotch with a little earthy toffee and oak.
T: It tasted like it smelled, with a strong butter scotch character and a little earthy toffee and oak. It had a smooth, mostly sweet aftertaste.
M: It was slightly thick with a little carbonation. Decent body.
D: This was a great brew with delicious scent and taste. The body was only ok, but the finish was really smooth with well hidden alcohol, so it was easy to drink. Could probably age ok, but doesn't need it. Yum.

a: shaker pint serving, sort of a golden-amber in color, white head with a reasonably retained layer on the surface

s: big pale lager malt presence, bready, full and sweet yet maintaining a clean and focused lager cleanliness, features a wide range of ripe fruit sugars, very modest supply of grassy hop aromas

m: carbonation around moderate with a slick, malty body

t: heavy with sweet, bready lager malts, big on sugar coated fruit flavors - apple, various overripe tropicals, honey, mild noble hop flavors with a subtle bittering in the finish, deliciously sweet without being cloying, rich and satisfying, alcohol rarely shows through - pretty impressive given its weight

d: fairly easy for a 12 percent imperial lager

draft at Galaxy Hut on a night featuring most VA beers

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, best before 7/2014. Pours slightly hazy orange copper color with a 2 finger dense light khaki head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with moderate streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of big biscuit, toast, raisin, apple, pear, apricot, caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, light pepper, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt and yeast ester notes; with good strength. Taste of big biscuit, toast, raisin, apple, pear, apricot, caramel, brown bread, brown sugar, light nuttiness, light pepper, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Zero bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of biscuit, toast, raisin, pear, apple, apricot, caramel, brown bread, brown sugar, light nuttiness, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice balance, robustness, and complexity of dark/bready malt and yeast ester flavors; with a great malt/yeast flavor balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a smooth, moderately slick, and lightly bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice doppelbock. All around good balance, robustness, and complexity of dark/bready malt and yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Poured into a Funky Buddha Brewery snifter. Cork says Best by: July-2014.

A- Pours a medium amber color with a 3/4 inch off-white head that retains very well before slowly falling to a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a mostly full sheet of surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves a thick ring behind.

S- Grainy, bready aroma that's slightly sweet and has a bit of an alcohol fume to it.

T- Smooth, somewhat neutral flavor of more husky grain and toasty malt. Slightly earthy and bready. Also sweet with a honey-like characteristic Quite smooth for the ABV.

M- Clean and refined as per the usual for a lager. Medium carbonation and a body leaning toward the lighter side.

O- This is only the third "Triple Bock" I've ever had and it's pretty good. I'd like to give this to someone new to craft to see if they can tell that it's not only 10% ABV but also a lager because of its high drinkability and it has some character to it as well

Picked up a bottle at Euro Market for $15. Poured clear gold with a white head. Overall the beer is smooth and well-balanced, but just not that complex. There are big, bready caramel malts and a vague hint of spicy hops, but this is an almost all-malt lager. I'd like some noticeable hops character, maybe some earthy undertones or mild juicy esters. Blue Mountain calls this a triple bock, but I've had more interesting and satisfying maibocks. Nice beer, but not worth the pricetag.

Served on tap at Blue Mountain Brewery in Afton, VA.

A: Pours a clear dark amber in color with some light to moderate amounts of visible carbonation. The beer has a finger tall off-white head that slowly fades to a thin film covering about half the surface of the beer with a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of toasted bready malts with some light fruit/apple notes. There are light amounts of spicy hops. Light amounts of alcohol are noticeable.

T: Moderate to strong flavors of toasted bready malts with some honey sweetness and some light fruits (apple but more like sweetened apple juice than apples or cider). Light amounts of spicy hops and alcohol in the finish. Almost no bitterness to this one.

M: Just slightly less than full bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Slightly syrupy with light to moderate amounts of alcohol heat in the finish.

O: With the slightly syrupy sweetness (not quite sweet enough to be cloying) and the high ABV which is present, this beer is not the easiest to drink and needs to be slowly sipped to be enjoyed.

750ml bottle corked and wired, with a picture of a sleeping bear in a nightcap.

Gorgeous light amber in color with golden edges. A 1 finger pale tan head recedes quickly. Good lace coverage of short endurance. Eventually, only a ring remains with the barest haze on the surface. Approaching the clarity of wine.

Richly sweet, toasty brown bread prevails. Stewed dark fruits with just a hint of spice from the hops.

Sweet dark fruits with light molasses and a bit of tart grapefruit with the peel. Toasted grains throughout with some light bitter hops in the end. Light spicy hops appear on occasion.

Rather full bodied with moderate bite upfront. Syrupy, but not overly sticky. Alcohol is evident on the swallow.

The sweet/syrupyABV interaction pushes the envelope for me. Not quite cloying. Definitely a sipper, and worthy of a slower more deliberate approach. It would be a good winter warmer and perhaps deserving of another month or two of maturity.

On-tap at Mugs Alehouse, Brooklyn, NY

A: The beer is crystal clear yellowish amber in color and has no visible carbonation. It poured with lacing on the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass; the head eventually completely faded away.
S: Faint aromas of bready and grainy malts are present in the nose along with hints of spicy hops.
T: The taste is similar to the smell, with stronger notes of grainy malts and spicy hops. No alcohol is perceptible.
M: It feels a bit more than medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation. The mouthfeel has slight hints of warming.
O: Although you might be fooled by the unusual clear appearance of this beer, it is a good American version of a German style.

"A long winters nap" is certainly on the agenda when popping the top on a 22oz bottle of this German-style Dopplebock that would drink more like a triple Bock if there were such a thing.

The "Barrel House" brew pours with a bright peach-orange-copper coloration. Its brightly clear to show off all those gold highlights. A dainty creamy white head tops the beer and soon dissolves back into its body, largely due to the ales own viscosity and alcohol that fights it. This makes the ale look nearly as much as brandy, equipped with legging, as it does beer.

Boastful sweetness and fruit emerge in aromas. Its succulent sweetness seems of honey, fresh baked bread, and raw barley. A thread of orchard fruit- peach, apple and pear runs through the sweetness and gives a glimpse into the lagers other built-in complexities. As the beer warms though, a scent of brandy alcohol and stone/pitted fruit come out to play.

The beer's dense sweetness is lavish with honey, toffee and a dab of molasses. Only the brandy alcohol taste slices through the sweetness and paves way for the estery blend to take hold. Bruised fruit varieties of those orchard fruits accompany apricot, dates, figs and sultans for an unexpected rich taste. As the sweetness weakens a bit late, herbal hop notes provide just enough bitterness to keep the beer from cloying.

Full, rich, savory and succulent- the beer's deep body is candy-coated as its high residual malt sweetness lingers indefinitely on the mouth. The early creaminess of carbonation is fast -fleeting and results in a long savory draw- much like port or, again- brandy.

Lead by sweetness, booze and apple- every sip of the beer draws direct comparisons to apple brandies. But the drinkability of beer, its barley backdrop, and its carbonation keeps reminding the palate that is very much a beer.

orange hue with a white foam cap about half an inch high, ample carbonation is keeping the head alive and lending to lovely lacing, a nice enough looking brew

musty dark honey, biscuity (slight), slightly herbal hops, pretty mellow and steady

taste etc...
banana with a sweet finish, no alcohol in the flavor but immediate warming in the stomach, the carbonation feels really low - barely there in the mouth, medium weight which aids drink-ability, kind of leaves a slick on the tongue with mostly sweetness but some slight bitterness on the edges, very easy drinking,

a little sweet for me, not bad, very easy going down but I don't love it by any stretch, the ABV is extremely well hidden and will probably lead to a nice nap (sorry, couldn't resist the hack urge)
