An interesting small batch (single barrel) experiment from one of my local breweries (right over the mountain! Lucky me!).

Base is their standard summer wit bier, fermented with champagne and Celis wit yeast.

Appearance is very wit-y (heavily cloudy), but with a pinkish hue (due, obviously to both the cherries and the wine barrel.

taste is out there, but not I-don't-want-to-drink-it out there. Lucky enough to talk with the brewer (or one of them) who said he isn't really happy with it, but that it was a fun one-off with a local winery or something. Base barrel was a cab sauv, I think.

Tart in a good, almost lambicy way. Wine barrel perhaps added a bit too much tannic flavor. Maybe try a more neutral barrel that aged a blanc or pinot grigio next time?

Either way, I personally like the flavors for a summer time tart quencher (Virginia's version of Berliner Weisse?). Keep the good weirdness coming, Blue Mountain.

Reviewed from notes taken at the brewery on July 30th. The beer is described as barrel- and fruit-aged Belgian-inspired Witbier. It's brewed with 1/3 pilsen malt, 1/3 wheat malt, and 1/3 raw wheat. It's aged in Cabernet Sauvignon barrels with tart cherries. It's fermented with witbier and Champagne yeasts. And it's served at the brewery with lemon.

Review:

The appearance is light pink with a broken irregular light pink head.

The smell is fruity combined with a wheat tone.

The beer is very fruity. The flavor is of tart cherry that is a bit too sweet, which overwhelms the wheat ale flavor. There is also a lemon hint the helps to balance the tart cherry.

The mouthfeel is medium carbonated, light bodied, and low on hoppiness.
