Even though Blue Mountain is in my state and is basically a weekend getaway for BAs in the area, this is only my second brew by them.

Served in an Olde Hickory shaped-glass.

A: Looks like a word-class amber ale: Copper in color, cloudy, and with a nice off-white head that head very fickle bubbles.

S: Very fresh, almost with a hint of sourness, and low on the hop food chain. After sniffing, drinking, sniffing, drinking over time, I got a good bit of the barrel-aging... much more so than I got on the taste.

T: Right away, this tasted like something Brooklyn would make: Crisp in nature (even on their high octane stuff), bright and a bit yeasty on the end, with no trace of oak to my palate whatsoever. Very, very tasty. I'm thinking the mere restain of the hop component was the barrel's real contribution.

M: Bubbly and spritzy, with some nice lacing left on the glass. Not hop bitterness. As a matter of fact, "citrus" is not a word in the Local Species category.

O: Even though I still think $10.99 is still a bit higher than I think this beer ought to be, especially considering it's a local one, this was quite tasty and even better than I expected.

On tap at Sticks and Stones.Poured into a stemmed glass a slight hazed deep auburn color with a fluffy white head that lasted for quite awhile.Carmael and dark fruit stood out most in the nose with mild phenols and vanilla detected as well.Somewaht sweet upfront with caramel and vanilla flavors with lighter than expected spiced phenols coming into play with a decent drying toasted oak flavors lingering in the finish.The barrel doesn't play a huge role in this either does the phenols,maybe a slightly tame version of the style,still not bad.

Smells like a sour. The taste follow to some extent. Odd, barrel-aged wild ale. Neither especially challenging nor appealing.

A: A rather nice looking beer in general. Big fluffy head, reddish copper color, and mostly clear. Good retention and fun shifting lace.

S: Smell is surprisingly subtle. A lot of bright fruitiness, flowers, and spice over a pile of smooth caramel-bread malt. Orange and lemon peel with complimentary pepper an other spices.

T: Syrupy malt, grassy hops, fruit and spice. Interesting flavors. Not really any bourbon barrel but vanilla is apparent.

M: Dry and chalky yet wet and syrupy.

O: Interesting beer. It seems like an unplanned beer. That is a beer that came out differently than expected but you still like it. It pretty good but seems unrefined.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Reviewed from notes.

Appearance - Deep golden body and a white head. Good retention with a couple of chunks of foam remaining on the surface.

Smell - Oaky and very yeasty. A little bit of vanilla. Not really appealing.

Taste - Dominated by oak and vanilla. Weird flavor. Yeasty and not very hoppy. Sweet malty finish.

Mouthfeel - Quite carbonated. Sprizty until the end. Sugary aftertaste.

Overall - Not sure what to make of this. Strange flavors that don't seem to work together.

Describes as "A Belgian inspired, barrel aged, American hopped experimental sort of ale"....?....Pours a light brown-amber color, cloudy with a decent head and pretty decent lacing. Aroma is of some oak and twangy malt sweetness. Taste has some oak in it, not much bourbon. Carbonation is average and taste is rather mild, with the oak being the predominant flavor. Not much going on with this beer, light, decent, balanced but not quite the mouthful of flavor I was expecting !!

semi-hazed auburn glow with a thin white head. nose is very interesting. Lots of classic belgian notes, bananas and clove, bit of spice and vanilla. Touch of oak but not getting any bourbon really.

You can taste a bit of the bourbon but damn this is an interesting beer.Strong barley malt presence up front with an faint oaky and vanilla flavor from the wood. Belgian yeast flavors quickly take over with a dried chalkyness and horse blanket like flavors. This then quickly rolls into an herbal hop bitterness. Very complex and layered beer. Very faint bourbon notes are present throughout as the beer warms but in no way are the forefront flavor of this beer allowing a lot of these other funky and complex flavors come forward. Extremely complex and layered with flavors that somehow roll into eachother extremely well despite how different they are. Super unique and unlike anything i've ever had. I love it.

On tap at Dobra Zupas, Beckley

A- pours a clear golden orange color with a small creamy white head, good retention and lots of lace left behind

S- lots of citrus on the nose with some Belgian yeast, not really picking up any barrel

T- citrusy hop follows the nose with some earthy banana Belgian yeast, maybe picking up a trace of oak and vanilla but not really getting any bourbon

M- medium body and carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel with a slight bite, finishing slightly crisp and foamy

O- nice citrusy notes made it very drinkable, but any bourbon barrel notes are hard to find

Tap at Duckworths. Orangy pour, thin layer if white. Laces just a tiny bit.

Aroma, citrus and a small amount of funk and yeasty esters. A little vanilla.

Taste, a good mix of yeasty spice, some herbal bitter hops and a mild malty caramel. Barrel adds some vanilla and a tinge if toasty wood.

In between light and mid somewhere. A nice level of carbonation, more than the appearance would lead. Pretty nice take on the style, with some uniqueness added.

Pours a cloudy amber with a small white head. Aroma and taste is of biscuit malt, Belgian yeast, fruity with some mild citrus hops. A medium body with nice smooth texture and mild carbonation. Finish is a combination of biscuit malt and Belgian yeast, a bit of caramel and toffee notes, fruity with some mild citrus hops for balance. Overall a well balanced tasty and enjoyable brew.

- Belgian inspired bal. aged, american hopped experimental ale.

A: When backlighted a caramel apple coloring that is filled with a dense, misty carbonation. Frothy tan head shows some resilience while leaving a single, thick, milky band for lace.

S: Aroma is fruity, apple-pear, spicy american hops upon first uncorking. Sweet caramelized fruit, golden raisins, melon, and white oak is clearly dominant with subtle charred hints.

T: Spicy hops, wine-oak alcohol, and pancakes. Green melon, fresh wet citrusy hops on the close. Sweet and fruity flavor, caramelized pear and apple closely resemble the nose. The fruit is fresh, wet, and juicy. The alcohol is toasted and with a charred barrel woodiness and oaky wine finish. Flowery hops, spicy citrus leaves a bit of dryn on the close out. Honey-fruit, semi-dry lemon-straw with a lovely leave of wine oak alcohol.

M: Mouthful was medium, small tingle of carbonation, spicy.

O: Overall sweetly toasted, light and freshly fruity makes this drink easier then it looks. Has a harmonous blend of belgian yeast, fresh wet fruitiness, and american spicy hops balanced nicely with subtle hints of charred oak woodiness. Everything is delicately balanced and fine tuned here, a dark looking heavy beer that really does drink much lighter then it looks. crisp and refreshing. very good try.

A: pours a slightly hazy copper with three fingers of white head that recedes into a thin cap with a little lacing.

S: lots of sweet fruit aromas up front with candy sugar, cinnamon and other spices. Vanilla and oak also come through.

T: spices, candy suvar,and sweet fruits come through here as well. There is also an astringent,chemical-like flavor present. The finish has some slight oak and vanilla notes.

M: medium-light body with lowish carbonation, this beer is a little undercarbonated.

O: a solid beer overall, thougb the chemical-like flavor is a bit off-putting.

A: light apricot in color, very little head on top, what's there is white.

S: hoppy, with a touch of licorice. Touches if citrus, and a bit of a chalky note.

T: definitely a but odd, there is a hoppy flavor, a well a hints of vanilla and caramel. But there is almost a chalky minty flavor that I'm not digging. Weird, but not so weird that i want to stop drinking, need to figure this one out.

m: medium in body, carbonation is medium, slightly dry mouthfeel.

O: overall a weird amalgamation of flavors that is interesting, but nit necessarily delicious...

Poured from a corked & caged 750 mL bottle into a Brewer's Art goblet. Moderate hand. Cork reads, "Best by June 2015".

A: 4.25 Cloudy, honey-colored body with 1.5 fingers of nice, dense, off-white head. Good retention. Moderate lacing.

S: 3.75 Noble-type, grassy hops with lighter citrus notes. Touches of musty yeast. Bready malt. Hint of indistinct spice. Faint wood, oak.

T: 3.5 Dry, woody, earthy notes open with some hop-fueled bitterness. A brief swell of bourbon-type sweetness and malt. Returns to a medium hop bitterness and a fairly dry finish. Minimal alcohol presence.

M: 4.25 Moderate carbonation with a medium body. Nice creamy texture.

O: 3.75 The hops and barrel-aged notes are there, but lack some cohesion. Feels like there is something missing in the middle to fill out the flavor profile.

Bottle poured into a tulip glass. Hazy copper color with two fingers of fluffy tan head. Head starts to dissipate after a few minutes leaving large patches of sticky lacing. Good amount of fine carbonation rise up from the bottom slowly.

Mild aroma. Notes fruity yeast ester, red apple and sweet ripe pear, slightly stale hop of dried grass, and mild generic herbal notes. A touch of caramel malt.

Taste follows the aroma, fruity yeast ester flavors dominate, apple, pear, maybe a little banana. Some yeast spiciness coriander and white pepper. Not much hop flavor on the taste, maybe a bit of earthy herbal flavor. Medium finish with lingering yeast ester flavors.

Light body with decent soft carbonation. Easy to drink, but a bit one dimensional with how the Belgian yeast flavors dominate.

Pours darker than expected, a deep auburn color with a nice, tall, airy head that deposits some fine lace on the glass. Subtle aroma...perfumy floral, apple, yeast, faint wood. Tastes of zesty citrus and Belgian yeast with some oak, leather, and a mineral note in the finish. Light malty sweetness and a raw, grassy hoppiness. Not much bourbon to be found, other than a hint of vanilla. Medium bodied and creamy. Interesting...

L - This beer pours copper in color with amber highlights. It has a slight haze. The head in two inches tall and beige.

S - Initially this beer struck my as vinous with some esters reminiscent of Belgian yeast. As it warmed the aromas seemed to fade. I did get a little pear and alcohol.

T - At first it was bitter. Once it warmed up I tasted some spicy pear. I got fleeting hints of citrus. The finish was dry.

M - Medium and highly carbonated

O - The description on the bottle made this beer sound interesting which it was. However, I detected nothing from the bourbon barrel. I would have never guessed this beer was barrel aged. Nonetheless, it is a good beer. It comes across as a saison/BSPA hybrid. It is absolutely worth a try.

A: The beer is clear red in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high light beige head that died down but consistently left a thin head covering the surface.
S: There are light aromas of Belgian yeast in the nose along with some hints of spices.
T: The overall taste is similar to the smell but the finish is a little more complex with hints of vanilla from the bourbon barrel aging.
M: It feels a bit shy of medium-bodied and slightly smooth on the palate with a moderate to high amount of carbonation.
O: The bourbon barrel aging definitely makes this the finish of this beer a little more interesting but it seems that this could have been better integrated into the overall taste. You really need to warm this beer up in order to taste the bourbon.

Pours a nice coppery color, almost clear, with a 3 1/2 finger pale tan head and lacing. A tower of bubbles rises from the middle of my Ommegang glass.

Smells lightly sweet and fruity with spicy yeast, overripe citrus, and some light mustiness.

The taste was lightly tart at first, with some moderating sweetness, but an overying musty bitterness detracted from the flavor. Someone earlier mentioned "chalky".

A well-rounded mouthfeel with a light prickle of carbonation, a pleasant stickiness, and the burn of alcohol in the throat.

This beer is much better as it warms. I tested it at 57.7 degrees, near the bottom of my last glass, and it still had some of the musty bitterness I described before. If I tried this again I would try it at room temperature, as the last few swallows definitely tasted the best. Overall though, Blue Mountain Barrel House has the best Virginia beers I've tasted yet.

A- cloudy caramel color with a quick two finger off white head
S- very earthy, dirty, vegetable, some belgian yeast, caramel, hints of dark fruit
T- plenty of earthy saison barnhouse flavors, dark fruit, a nice oak backbone, finishes with a grassy malt flavor, slight warm hop presence, dry
M- a decent amount of carbonation, dry throughout
O- what a weird ass beer. I like how unique it is but it's not something I'd buy regularly. There are a lot of unique and complex balances between a saison funk and barrel aged malty ale. The only beer I could ever relate to this would be fantôme noir but this is a lot better (less sweet, less fruity). This brew is labeled correctly --- experimental sort of ale--- yeah weird but entertaining for your taste buds and definitely worth trying at least once.

I had this at the November Baltimore Area BA tasting. Poured from the bottle into a tasting snifter.

Appearance: The beer pours a cloudy orangish amber color with a half finger of off white head. A layer of head stays on top of the pour.

Smell: There is a strong herbal presence here. I'm getting sweet, slightly fruity malt with some alcohol. The fruit reminds me a little bit of apricots.

Taste: Fruity and herbal notes right off the bat. I'm getting some mild alcohol. There is a malt note in the background with some fruit and oak. The finish is slightly bitter.

Mouthfeel: The body is medium with tingly carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: I thought this had a nice blend of flavors, but the finial product was a bit strange as well. I'd have more.

Picked up a single at Ingles in Biltmore, NC which is right outside Asheville, NC. IMHO, the best place to buy beer in so-called "Beer City," because you get a great selection at the cheapest price. Only in Asheville could you find a beer like this at a grocery store!

Appearance 4.0: Poured out a beautiful caramel/amber color with a nice 1/2" frothy head. The head shrunk down to 1/4" and stayed around the entire session.

Smell 4.25: Wow! Amazing bouquet on this beer. Starts out with a simply fantastic blend of peppery, piney, citrusy hops all brought out and enhanced with a deep rosiny hint of oak and nice notes of vanilla and straw.

Taste 4.25: Front is slightly sweet with little in terms of real taste. This quickly fades to the middle where the palate receives a huge judo kick of piney hops, followed by a lovely taste of wood rosin, followed by a different hop flavor, this time citrus. Finish is slightly tangy with another hit of light, peppery hops and a big flavor of oak. Aftertaste is realitvely brief and, amazingly, is primarily focused on a deep maltiness that quickly fades.

Mouthfeel 4.0: Smooth, light and refreshing in the mouth.

Overall 4.25: Excellent brew and a fabulous IPA. This beer makes use of many west coast US hops and a very assertive malt that forms the backbone of the IPA. The added flavors from the oak barrels push everything over the top into the "above outstanding" category. Well worth the purchase if you are lucky enough to find it.

I picked up a bottle of Blue Mountain Brewery's Local Species about a month ago for $6.59 at Boyne Country Provisions. I've hear about this beer before and I wanted to try it, but I was pretty sure this brewery wasn't available in Michigan, so I was surprised when I saw a few bottles at Boyne Country Provisions, so I quickly grabbed a couple to try, so lets see how it goes. Best by June 2014. Poured from a cork and caged brown 12.7oz bottle into a snifter.

A- The bottle looks pretty nice, I like the design and it has a little information about the name and the beer. It poured a nice caramel amber color that was pretty cloudy and took on a ruby hue when held to the light with two and a half fingers worth of fluffy off white head that died down to a thin ring that stayed till the end and lets lots of sticky lacing behind. This is a pretty good looking beer, I have no complaints.

S- The aroma starts off with a higher amount of sweetness that had a candied sugar like aroma to it followed by loads of yeast, I get some Belgian yeast aromas that are a little spicy, but it seems like it's the funky yeast that shows up the most imparting a farm house ale like aroma that reminds me Brewery Vivants house yeast. Up next comes a big fruity aroma with pears and green apples sticking out the most with a slight bit of dark fruits in the background. Towards the end I get a woody aroma that must be from the the barrel and I also get a light citrus hop aroma. This beer had a pretty good aroma, I liked the yeast profile and all those fruity aromas were pretty nice.

T- The taste seems to be very similar to the aroma and it starts off with a medium amount of sweetness that still has a light candied sugar aspect to it followed by loads of yeast that are pretty much dominated by some funky yeast that has a Farmhouse Ale flavor to it and it's not very brett like. Up next comes the fruit with the green apples and pears showing up the most with a really light amount of dark fruits in the background along with a light woody flavor. On the finish comes the hops that have earthy and citrus hop flavors to it with a very light amount of medium bitterness and a very light amount of tartness that seems to be almost even and it had a funky yeast and fruity aftertaste. This is a pretty good tasting beer, some of the aspects were a little lighter than others, but it still retained a decent amount of complexity.

M- Very smooth, clean, pretty crisp, fairly dry, medium bodied with a slightly higher amount of medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is pretty good and it works well with this beer.

Overall I thought this was a good beer and it doesn't really fit the style of a Belgian Strong Ale, but as far as funky Belgians go I think it's pretty on par and the yeast really does remind me of Brewery Vivants house yeast. The yeast did seem just a little overpowering and the barrel and hop aspects didn't show up as much as I thought they would, but I still really like liked the flavors and I thought it was enjoyable. This beer had good drinkability, it was very smooth, not filling, crisp and the taste did a good job at holding my attention, drinking the whole bottle is no problem and if I was really in the mood for a beer like this I could see myself drinking a couple bottles. What I liked the most about this beer how all the aspects were equally good and didn't really have a weak point. The only thing that I liked the least about this beer was how little the barrel and hops showed up, if they showed up a little more I think this would be a very good beer. I would buy this beer again, I have a bottle in the cellar and I might grab a couple more next time I'm at Boyne Country Provisions, it's a little pricey but I think it's worth it. I would recommend this to anyone who like the funkier Belgian ales. All in all I was pretty happy with this beer, it wasn't really what I expected, but I ended up enjoying it and I think the funkier yeast profile worked well with this beer. This made for a good first impression of Blue Mountain Brewery, I didn't see any of their other beer on the shelf and I don't know much about this brewery, but if I saw some of their other beers I'm pretty sure I would give them a try. Good job guys, I'm glad I took a chance on this beer and I think it really paid off. I'll be interested to see how this changes over time.

A: Pours a clear light garnet red in color with some light amounts of visible carbonation. The beer has a finger tall off-white head that reduces to a thick film covering the majority of the surface of the beer and a slightly thicker ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate to significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light to moderate aromas of Belgian yeast with some light peppery spiciness.

T: Light amount of bourbon flavors come out in the finish of the beer as it warms up. Upfront there is a high amount of pale malts with lots of Belgian yeast spiciness along with some hints of brett.

M: Slightly less than medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Very light amounts of dryness.

O: I was really expecting more bourbon and barrel presence in the beer and it disappointed in that respect. Also, the beer has some interesting components but it just does not feel well integrated or successful when put together.
