Had this on 2013-10-09 in Columbia, PA

A - Pretty clear ruby brown with a 2.5-finger off-white head that fades to 1-finger pretty quickly and leaves very good lacing.

S - Some caramel, light Belgian yeast, spice. Sweet, pleasant. Not very strong.

T - Interesting flavor. Somewhat like a apple/pear Belgian IPA but with a juicy red grapefruit flesh twist. There's plenty of toasted bread and caramel malt to balance it out. I like that the typical fruity Belgian yeast esters are subsumed / bent to the will of the mighty American grapefruit.

M - Medium body and carbonation. A bit resinous and prickly. Dries nicely.

O - I drank this glass at about 55 degrees initially and liked it even more as it warmed. The taste grew on me. I like it. (746 characters)

I picked up a bottle of Blue Mountain Brewery's Local Species about a month ago for $6.59 at Boyne Country Provisions. I've hear about this beer before and I wanted to try it, but I was pretty sure this brewery wasn't available in Michigan, so I was surprised when I saw a few bottles at Boyne Country Provisions, so I quickly grabbed a couple to try, so lets see how it goes. Best by June 2014. Poured from a cork and caged brown 12.7oz bottle into a snifter.

A- The bottle looks pretty nice, I like the design and it has a little information about the name and the beer. It poured a nice caramel amber color that was pretty cloudy and took on a ruby hue when held to the light with two and a half fingers worth of fluffy off white head that died down to a thin ring that stayed till the end and lets lots of sticky lacing behind. This is a pretty good looking beer, I have no complaints.

S- The aroma starts off with a higher amount of sweetness that had a candied sugar like aroma to it followed by loads of yeast, I get some Belgian yeast aromas that are a little spicy, but it seems like it's the funky yeast that shows up the most imparting a farm house ale like aroma that reminds me Brewery Vivants house yeast. Up next comes a big fruity aroma with pears and green apples sticking out the most with a slight bit of dark fruits in the background. Towards the end I get a woody aroma that must be from the the barrel and I also get a light citrus hop aroma. This beer had a pretty good aroma, I liked the yeast profile and all those fruity aromas were pretty nice.

T- The taste seems to be very similar to the aroma and it starts off with a medium amount of sweetness that still has a light candied sugar aspect to it followed by loads of yeast that are pretty much dominated by some funky yeast that has a Farmhouse Ale flavor to it and it's not very brett like. Up next comes the fruit with the green apples and pears showing up the most with a really light amount of dark fruits in the background along with a light woody flavor. On the finish comes the hops that have earthy and citrus hop flavors to it with a very light amount of medium bitterness and a very light amount of tartness that seems to be almost even and it had a funky yeast and fruity aftertaste. This is a pretty good tasting beer, some of the aspects were a little lighter than others, but it still retained a decent amount of complexity.

M- Very smooth, clean, pretty crisp, fairly dry, medium bodied with a slightly higher amount of medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is pretty good and it works well with this beer.

Overall I thought this was a good beer and it doesn't really fit the style of a Belgian Strong Ale, but as far as funky Belgians go I think it's pretty on par and the yeast really does remind me of Brewery Vivants house yeast. The yeast did seem just a little overpowering and the barrel and hop aspects didn't show up as much as I thought they would, but I still really like liked the flavors and I thought it was enjoyable. This beer had good drinkability, it was very smooth, not filling, crisp and the taste did a good job at holding my attention, drinking the whole bottle is no problem and if I was really in the mood for a beer like this I could see myself drinking a couple bottles. What I liked the most about this beer how all the aspects were equally good and didn't really have a weak point. The only thing that I liked the least about this beer was how little the barrel and hops showed up, if they showed up a little more I think this would be a very good beer. I would buy this beer again, I have a bottle in the cellar and I might grab a couple more next time I'm at Boyne Country Provisions, it's a little pricey but I think it's worth it. I would recommend this to anyone who like the funkier Belgian ales. All in all I was pretty happy with this beer, it wasn't really what I expected, but I ended up enjoying it and I think the funkier yeast profile worked well with this beer. This made for a good first impression of Blue Mountain Brewery, I didn't see any of their other beer on the shelf and I don't know much about this brewery, but if I saw some of their other beers I'm pretty sure I would give them a try. Good job guys, I'm glad I took a chance on this beer and I think it really paid off. I'll be interested to see how this changes over time. (4,374 characters)

- Belgian inspired bal. aged, american hopped experimental ale.

A: When backlighted a caramel apple coloring that is filled with a dense, misty carbonation. Frothy tan head shows some resilience while leaving a single, thick, milky band for lace.

S: Aroma is fruity, apple-pear, spicy american hops upon first uncorking. Sweet caramelized fruit, golden raisins, melon, and white oak is clearly dominant with subtle charred hints.

T: Spicy hops, wine-oak alcohol, and pancakes. Green melon, fresh wet citrusy hops on the close. Sweet and fruity flavor, caramelized pear and apple closely resemble the nose. The fruit is fresh, wet, and juicy. The alcohol is toasted and with a charred barrel woodiness and oaky wine finish. Flowery hops, spicy citrus leaves a bit of dryn on the close out. Honey-fruit, semi-dry lemon-straw with a lovely leave of wine oak alcohol.

M: Mouthful was medium, small tingle of carbonation, spicy.

O: Overall sweetly toasted, light and freshly fruity makes this drink easier then it looks. Has a harmonous blend of belgian yeast, fresh wet fruitiness, and american spicy hops balanced nicely with subtle hints of charred oak woodiness. Everything is delicately balanced and fine tuned here, a dark looking heavy beer that really does drink much lighter then it looks. crisp and refreshing. very good try. (1,339 characters)

Pours a humongous three finger head of eggshell white to tan foam, dense with an undulating surface, excellent retention given how whipped up it is, the lacing is on the wispy side but sticks tenaciously. Translucently clear, like vellum, coppery base that turns equally brown and orange, very few bubbles to be seen. The nose has a fresh if not quite clean profile, stone, poor dirt, pepper and dried grapefruit pulps and grains, the hoppiness sneaks up on you then, wham!, the apple, pear, peach fruit is direct and underripe like you wish you left them on the counter for just another day or two, no meaningful trace of bourbon barrel aging. Medium-bodied, smooth with a pleasingly creamy texture, even the underlying sourness can’t interfere. That said, the cherry, apricot, red apple, pear, peach fruit sunny and tart in just the right way. There’s an earthy, leafy element but not thick enough to be like “sous bois” or deep forest in character. Mostly orange citrus with a hint of lemon. Clean yeastiness, some banana, spicy without any one spice leaping to the fore. Harmonized and very drinkable, probably one of those beers best not categorized, just enjoyed. (1,177 characters)

Purchased at a random Indian grocery/spice shop in the East Village. Muled back to Oz and shared.

Pours a deep red colour, a bit cloudy. Great off-white head that sinks a bit too quickly, but nice lace curtain left behind. Looks nice.

Smells a little funky at first, with a note of cheese even. Big cranberry tartness, with washed-rind, horse blanket and a savoury oak note that's also very prominent. Funky, oaky, not much else, but who'd want more?

Taste is more funk but also more malt. Quite a sweetness upfront with brown sugar and a touch of peanuts; develops bold, funky notes midway, with a touch of that washed-rind cheese, but then finish is all bourbon oak with vanilla and a touch of coconut. Could use a bit more on the Belgian front, as that bourbon really takes over midway. Not a bad thing, but I feel this beer would have had more to offer if not so oak-soaked.

Full, but rounded. A bit foamy in the mouth and a good finish. Wonderful.

Nice introduction to Virginian beer. Lots of character, but with a good, steady hand on the whacky factor. I feel like if this were even a couple of % ABV bigger it would be an absolute knock-out, as the main issue here is the oak is slightly too dominant. But if all Virginian brews are like this, I look forward to more. (1,280 characters)

750ml bottle purchase by @LaitueGonflable in NYC. Shared with me in Sydney.

Pours a pleasantly hazed amber red hue with a full and persistent head of off-white tending to pink. Lacing is intricate and excellent.Body is full but still pretty fluid. Quite minimal carbonation, despite the persistence and size of the head. Looks good.

Nose is rounded and hoppy. Plenty of fruit, but blended with a supple sweetness that gives off overripe plums and stonefruit with very little sharpness or acidity. Under this is a very pleasant woody note. Oak and earthiness. Slight rustic funk to it, but more of a suggestion of acidity without being actually acidic. The sweetness tempers everything in here, making it feel fresh and full throughout. Lovely stuff.

Taste is clean and bright, without perhaps the complexity that the nose suggested. Certainly the earthy, slightly woody tones come through, rustic and slightly bretty. But the sweetness, especially the stonefruit has been removed, leaving just the malt basis to hold up the rest of it. Faint earthy hop characters come through on the back giving a point of conclusion. It's pleasant.

Feel is smooth throughout and quite undercarbonated. In this beer, that's no bad thing.

Overall, this is a very pleasant, drinkable brew with a lot going for it. If I was a tad disappointed with the palate, it's just because the nose was so wonderful and promised so much. But it's still very good stuff: rounded, integrated, and complete. (1,478 characters)

Appearance - Deep golden body and a white head. Good retention with a couple of chunks of foam remaining on the surface.

Smell - Oaky and very yeasty. A little bit of vanilla. Not really appealing.

Taste - Dominated by oak and vanilla. Weird flavor. Yeasty and not very hoppy. Sweet malty finish.

Mouthfeel - Quite carbonated. Sprizty until the end. Sugary aftertaste.

Overall - Not sure what to make of this. Strange flavors that don't seem to work together. (522 characters)

Serving Type - 22oz caged and corked bottle

Appearance - Golden tan/burnt orange with a nice 2 inch thick, frothy head, and tons of lacing.

Smell - Floral fruits, Belgium yeasts, sugars, spices, banana, grapes, plum, rasin. Bready and a little grassy with funk and sour notes.

Taste - First sip there is immediate traces of Belgium yeasts, sour fruits and a faint hint of oak. Spices add some clove and pepper notes. Has a farmhouse like funky note to it. I do get some warmth of alcohol near the finish.

Mouthfeel - The yeasts and sour fruits coat the tongue with some sour and sweetness. Palate gets more of the same with some spices and a hint of oaked flavor. The aftertaste is a little sour and bitter.

Overall - Interesting beer, Like a hybrid really, mix of Belgium pale, farmhouse and barrel aged pale ale. It gets better as it warms and more fruity notes come out. Good beer, wish the barrel oaked flavors were more present but overall was tasty. (960 characters)

A: Pours a darker brown with a slight amber hue. Unfiltered. Full head initially does not retain much and little lacing.

S: Yeast, lemon, wheat, candi sugar aroma.

T: Great balance and complexity to this brew - slight sweetness up front, sour and malty flavor towards the back end. Whiskey barrel somewhat present.

M: Good creamy carbonation on the tongue.

O: Really good brew and impressive what has been done with the flavors yet remains a relatively low ABV. (465 characters)

It's a toasted golden with a solid sheet of yellowed cream. Smells of light belgian yeast, apple meat, some bretty character, caramel malts and some dried cut grass. Flavor is malty, biscuits, some oak, smoke, golden raisin, seltzer, a little bitterness and some metal on the finish. Body is medium with a fine, silky carb and a near bone dry finish. I was skeptical of this beer, but was surprised to find the belgian yeast wasn't too overpowering, while the oak was a nice second fiddle with this beer. Well done. (535 characters)

750ml picked up in NC over Easter.

Enjoyed from an Orval glass, somewhere around 40-45 degrees.

Pours with a light, cream-colored head over a cloudy, dark amber body. Small amt of carbonation visible. Great lacing. Thinking this is incorrectly categorized as a BSPA.

Aromas are of lighter fruit. Citrus, green banana peel, and a little bit of yeast. No trace of charred oak barrel.

Very soft mouthfeel for a BSPA. Light spritz bite on the palate. Slightly tart. Some bitter quality from the hops. Flavors lead mostly with ginger, tree fruit - including lime, and navel oranges - and a touch of sourdough bread. The charred oak barrel quality only faintly appears in the finish as it warms, and only if you're looking for it.

Quite interesting, and pretty enjoyable & drinkable beer. IMHO, they should try putting this in 12oz bottles, and sell 6-ers. You could easily make your way thru a six-pack over a nice Spring/Summer evening. (942 characters)

Appearance: copper body; little cloudy; off-white two finger head; nice layers of lacing

Aroma: light bready, soft clove, and nothing else

Flavors: soft rye bread, spice, clove like on the back and aftertaste, I keep on sipping and expecting more and nothing, oh how I wanted the oak barrel to come through, uninspiring,

Mouthfeel: fine fizzy feel from the carbonation, light spice, empty on flavor for a barrel aged ale, short aftertaste

To the Point: plain old uninspiring, it was drinkable, I finished the whole bottle and the flavor nor the mouthfeel ever changed. I won’t buy again. (626 characters)

750 ml bottle into tulip glass; best before June 2014 on the cork. Pours fairly hazy deep reddish orange color with a nice 2-3 finger foamy and fluffy cream colored head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of lemon, orange zest, grapefruit, apple, pear, floral, grass, pepper, light clove, light oak, wheat, and floral earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of yeast and hop notes with slight barrel presence. Taste of lemon, orange zest, grapefruit, apple, pear, pepper, clove, floral, grass, light pine, wheat, and earthy yeast spiciness. Lingering notes of citrus, light fruits, pepper, clove, floral, grass, light pine, wheat, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice balance and complexity of yeast and hop flavors; with a great balance of malt, hop, and spicy ester notes with zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a fairly creamy and moderately crisp mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is an excellent Belgian strong pale ale. All around nice balance and complexity if hop, yeast, and malt flavors; and very smooth to sip on. Even though the stated barrel aging presence was minimal, it wasn’t really a determining factor for me with this style. A very enjoyable offering. (1,431 characters)

Even though Blue Mountain is in my state and is basically a weekend getaway for BAs in the area, this is only my second brew by them.

Served in an Olde Hickory shaped-glass.

A: Looks like a word-class amber ale: Copper in color, cloudy, and with a nice off-white head that head very fickle bubbles.

S: Very fresh, almost with a hint of sourness, and low on the hop food chain. After sniffing, drinking, sniffing, drinking over time, I got a good bit of the barrel-aging... much more so than I got on the taste.

T: Right away, this tasted like something Brooklyn would make: Crisp in nature (even on their high octane stuff), bright and a bit yeasty on the end, with no trace of oak to my palate whatsoever. Very, very tasty. I'm thinking the mere restain of the hop component was the barrel's real contribution.

M: Bubbly and spritzy, with some nice lacing left on the glass. Not hop bitterness. As a matter of fact, "citrus" is not a word in the Local Species category.

O: Even though I still think $10.99 is still a bit higher than I think this beer ought to be, especially considering it's a local one, this was quite tasty and even better than I expected. (1,205 characters)

Just going to go ahead and say drinking this beer was an experience... Corked bottle poured into a snifter.

A: Murky copper; thin, white head.

S: Comments from those in the room: "Smells like a container that once held tuna salad..." "Nail polish..." "Fireworks..." definitely nothing familiar.

T: Belgian yeast spice; tart and slightly oaky; white grapes.

M: Medium-light feel; lower carbonation; kind of dry.

O: An interesting beer, for sure; a variety of tastes not normally encountered with beer! I'd like to find the story behind this one... (552 characters)

semi-hazed auburn glow with a thin white head. nose is very interesting. Lots of classic belgian notes, bananas and clove, bit of spice and vanilla. Touch of oak but not getting any bourbon really.

You can taste a bit of the bourbon but damn this is an interesting beer.Strong barley malt presence up front with an faint oaky and vanilla flavor from the wood. Belgian yeast flavors quickly take over with a dried chalkyness and horse blanket like flavors. This then quickly rolls into an herbal hop bitterness. Very complex and layered beer. Very faint bourbon notes are present throughout as the beer warms but in no way are the forefront flavor of this beer allowing a lot of these other funky and complex flavors come forward. Extremely complex and layered with flavors that somehow roll into eachother extremely well despite how different they are. Super unique and unlike anything i've ever had. I love it. (912 characters)

330mL bottle poured into tulip

Hazed copper color with a brighter golden hue. Crop of frothy white head dissolves pretty quickly, leaving a thin layering of film and a few spots of lacing.

Soft notions of hops in the nose, oak barrel and soft warmth. Yeasty funk, touches of spice and bready sweetness.

Peppery and slightly sweet with touches of fruit. Pears and apples, toasted oak, hints of bourbon and vanilla. Belgian yeast, soft hoppiness and buttery biscuits. Finishes a little bitter, sweet and warm.

Medium body, slightly higher carbonation, a bit dry and sticky on the tongue. An interesting take on the style, although the barrel character was a bit more muted than I was expecting. (699 characters)

Poured into Chimay chalice from a 750ml Cork & Cage labeled best by May 2013 (Just a few weeks left on this bad boy)

A: Pours a hazy copper with a tight head that dissipates and lightly laces.

S: Had to work hard to pick up anything. Lemon is there and light caramel barely present, and slightly sour

T: Not sure if my bottle has turned, but this tastes like a flemish sour, like Bell's Oarsman. Funky, pleasantly sour, slightly metallic, citrus up front. Develops on the palate to an apple-like sweetness and hints of oak and caramel.

M: Nicely carbonated, but this beer feels a bit oily.

O: Based on other BA's reviews I think my bottle has developed into something different from what was originally there. Regardless, I thought it was a definite winner, perfect for a warm spring day. I found that each sip invited the next, and I enjoyed it more as it developed on my palate. Will look for a fresh one in the future to see how different it tastes. (957 characters)

Great looking beer. Nose is nice. I have high expectations based on as much. The flavor delivery is...odd. At first I thought the goal was a Flemish tone on things, but I question if this was intentional. Seems to be off, with an aftertaste that is...off putting. Although, it seems to get better as time goes on. But it took a lot of time. A lot. A for effort, C (at best) for execution. (477 characters)

"Different, secret, native. A creation of deep-drawn well water, special barley malts, American hops and Belgian yeast. Aged in charred American White Oak bourbon barrels. A beer as original and beautiful as our native Brookie. Best by date is March 2013. Brewed at the Blue Mountain Barrel House Late 2012.

Poured from a 750ml bottle to a snifter. Served north of 50º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a thick creamy head of an eggshell white color over a medium hazy deep orange amber body with ample carbonation. Retention is very good and lacing is medium and consistent. Body color is a bit darker than usual for the style. Appearance is solid. 4.5

(Smell) Aroma consists of a bready belgian pale malt, a mild citrusy and resiny hop blend and a mild spice blend, mostly coriander. Notes of orange zest and lemon peel is also notable, slight fruity yeast notes otherwise. This finds a comfortable spot between a Belgian Pale Ale and a Belgian IPA. Potency is mild. 3.75

(Taste) A light pale malt character, subtle hop blend and cracker yeast profile constructs the meat of this beer. All flavors together make for a very light drinking beer but it's capable of more flavor and body for the style. A medium dryness and faint wood tone on the finish is indicative of barrel aging, but otherwise it doesn't impact much character into the flavor. Overall it's a touch saccharine but the hop and yeast character does a good job at balancing it out. The end result is more positive than negative, although there are some notable gripes in how it comes out. 3.75

(Mouthfeel) Moderate carbonation with a wooden dry, relatively clean cracker malt finish. The body is light/medium for the style and light+ overall. Good pairing for the style. 4

(Overall) Some experiments work out very well but this one was a rather strange. The body of this beer is quite light with cracker malt and the hops and malt profile are also light to pair. The oak aging is a unique twist and does contribute a nice flavor, but a sharp dryness to the beer. Another interesting beer by the brewery. 4

AP: thin 1/4" head that dissipated fairly quick, dark golden amber colour.

AR: first whiff is Bourbon and vanilla, which gives me a good vibe. Caramel, candi sugar/fruits, raisin and fig.

T: First sip I get slapped on the tongue by an off metallic taste. Wait a bit then take a second sip and it's still there but not as strong. This isn't at all like the aroma suggested. White raisin, caramel and Belgian yeast are the other players I discern. The Bourbon and vanilla are MIA in the taste. I am pretty much disappointed by the taste.

M: slick and oily texture on the tongue, more thin than creamy.

OV: On the whole, disappointed with this brew. That off metallic flavour is stronger than the rest and I thought there weren't enough other flavours that could have been here that were missing. I wouldn't buy this one again, sorry to say. (903 characters)

A: A rather nice looking beer in general. Big fluffy head, reddish copper color, and mostly clear. Good retention and fun shifting lace.

S: Smell is surprisingly subtle. A lot of bright fruitiness, flowers, and spice over a pile of smooth caramel-bread malt. Orange and lemon peel with complimentary pepper an other spices.

T: Syrupy malt, grassy hops, fruit and spice. Interesting flavors. Not really any bourbon barrel but vanilla is apparent.

M: Dry and chalky yet wet and syrupy.

O: Interesting beer. It seems like an unplanned beer. That is a beer that came out differently than expected but you still like it. It pretty good but seems unrefined. (657 characters)

Pours darker than expected, a deep auburn color with a nice, tall, airy head that deposits some fine lace on the glass. Subtle aroma...perfumy floral, apple, yeast, faint wood. Tastes of zesty citrus and Belgian yeast with some oak, leather, and a mineral note in the finish. Light malty sweetness and a raw, grassy hoppiness. Not much bourbon to be found, other than a hint of vanilla. Medium bodied and creamy. Interesting... (446 characters)

Appearance: A nice looker, with a frothy ecru head that sits and stays upons the cloudy amber liquid beneath; nice lacing pattern, too

Smell: An herbal blend with caramel tones; subtle wood and fruity elements

Taste: The malt bill is caramel forward, with stone fruit and herbal elements kicking in by mid-palate; earthy hop flavors add bitterness and the yeast character is really out there, bringing bread and a bit of chalky/limey tartness (a touch of Brett, perhaps); the finish is a bit on the sweet side

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Overall: A lot of interesting things going on but I am not overly satisfied with the end result; the finish is a bit too sweet, given all the other things going on (734 characters)
