22 ounce bottle at fridge temp poured into a chalice. Bottle has white wax, but no dating that I can see.

Pours slightly hazy golden with little (almost no) head. Little or no carbonation. Smell is very Belgian. Banana and clove, yeast and funk.

Taste is sooo fruity. Apples are an interesting surprise. Banana of course. Some yeasty character and some honey, also a surprise. Pretty interesting.

Mouthfeel is thick but effervescent. Overall, pretty good beer.

Served in tulip. Poured a pretty, clean, clear yellow-gold color with less than 1/4 inch of white head that dissipated quickly, and left very light lacing.

The aroma was very subdued, some light grain, and faint yeast being the notable points. On the tongue though, the beer showed a hell of a lot more personality. Nice base grains, crisp, tangy yeast, and a finish that featured some lemon and banana notes.

The body was fairly typical for the style, perhaps a touch on the thin side, and had a very nicely dry finish. Drinkability was very good, mine was gone too quickly. Overall, a very pleasant brew. Certainly worth trying if you see it.

Appearance- Pours up very little head which goes away quicker than I can type this (almost). The head was a pure, cotton white while the body is a pale amber which appears as hazy and golden in the light. Lacing is spots at points in time.

Nose- Very subtle and discreet. It certainly doesn't match with the BA rating or suggest a 4.58 beer. I realize it's a small sample size but I get almost nothing in this department. Light bananas, some clove, a hint of apple. Notions of spice. Swirling brightens the banana but doesn't add anything else.

Taste- Light banana, some apple, there is also some lemon followed by a rounded hint of cloves. Touches of honey and possibly caramel but everything is very subtle and delicate. Even to the point of being watery. However, it doesn't quite reach that point because of the great balance and integration. No one note really stands out and while nothing amazes, this is a solid, if not subdued, tripel. Definitely, not in the same class as many Belgians but still a pretty good beer. There are even flashes of being really good. I think Hopworks has suceeded with this one. I had hoped they would as I would like a good, local tripel. Lots of soft apple on the finish. Reminiscent of apple butter with a slight tartness.

Mouthfeel- Closer to medium than light bodied. Slight syrupiness. Good carbonation, slight zing.

Drinkability- Very easy drinking and quite accessible. Doesn't show any of the 8.7%, much like Orabelle didn't show any of it's 8.3. That beer is much cheaper. 8 bucks is an okay price for this beer but probably not one that I would buy again. Orabelle is better.

Overall- Good, solid beer but seems to lack that je ne sais quoi that makes tripels tripels. Wouldn't turn it down and I would like to try it on tap, but I don't think I'll be buying a bottle again. Worth a try.

Superb Belgian style Tripel put out by HUB in limited release. Picked up a 22oz bottle with waxed top a la Makers Mark (but with white wax) at Zupan's in NW PDX. Pours a pretty copper with about an inch of head with decent lacing. Aromas were excellent with banana and fruit esters coming through strongly. Taste mirrored this - this is as close to an authentic Belgian tripel as you're going to find from an American brewery. I hope they bring this one back a couple of times per year.
