Finally knocking off a long-awaited Want. Thanks Daniel!

A: Pours a dark brown with a fizzy, fluffy light brown head. Fades at a pretty decent pace, leaving moderate light fluffy bits of lacing here and there.

S: Super strong coffee, just like sniffing a fresh cup. Has a unique sort of grainy, earthy aroma to go with it. Coffee mixed with dirt. Surprisingly appetizing given that description.

T: Coffee not nearly as strong here, thankfully. Very interesting. Up front there's lots of hearty grain, most of which I can't identify. There is definitely oatmeal, it's got that typical creaminess that I associate with it. Coffee mixes into the middle a bit, providing an extra layer of complexity. Coffee turns a little bitter into the finish with sweet toasted grains, almost pretzel-like in a way. Get a bit of wheat in here too. Very unique, wish I had more experience with these grains to pick them out. Definitely a nice variety that works together well, especially when combined with the coffee. A little coffee lingers between sips.

M: Medium bodied and smooth. A touch drying in the aftertaste.

O: What an interesting brew. Lots of exotic grains that balance well and combine into a surprisingly decent flavor. Coffee is very strong in the aroma but it is toned down in the flavor portion quite a bit, such that it melds with all the grains instead of overpowers them. Don't expect a normal stout with this one, it's basically got lots of toasted, borderline roasty grain notes with coffee mixed in. Like a malt-heavy brown ale with coffee in a manner of speaking. Sort of a hybrid beer. Still very tasty, complex (especially for 5.3%) balanced and smooth. I enjoyed it.

Pours an attractive ruby-tinted dark brown in the tall goblet. A low beige head caps the brew nicely. Some silky oatmeal consistency.

Well, the word for the flavor is "grainy." Interesting persistent spicy tang. Lots of blackened malt, or dark toasted amaranth, or some such. I wondered what the other unusual charred flavor was, and looking at the label, it's coffee. Some sweet malt offset by the rather bitter finish.

An interesting quaff, and I'm glad to see the experimentation with the non-traditional fermentables. Though I think the jury's still out on the oddball grains. From the 22 oz bottle bought at Bottleworks in Seattle.

Appearance- Pours up a decent amount of head that seems to have some retention. The head is a medium to slightly dark beige will the body is an opaque, dark chocolate brown. Some lacing- not as extensive as one might expect.

Nose- Not terribly complex, some presence. The bottle shows more roasted malt and nuttiness than the glass which is primarily coffee. After a while, the bottle is pretty much all coffee. I thought I got a light bit of bubblegum from the glass but it didn't last for long. Swirling intensifies the coffee notes.

Taste- Starts off with a bit of nuttiness with some sourness that doesn't seem to be the normal sour note that I get from some coffee beers. It has a savory touch to it- plus, it comes closer to the front than the end. I'm guessing this comes from the grains I'm unfamiliar with. The sourness doesn't have an acrid quality at all and it works very well with the coffee. I am at some what of a loss to fully describe what I'm tasting. Savory, maybe a little onion, some grain. There's almost a berry like quality to it without the sweetness. Leaves a lot of cereal and a slight woody bitterness on the linger. A little odd but I think I really it. I think it would be a competent stout anyway but the ancient grains give it at uniqueness that many competent stouts lack. Solid, good beer to really good beer. Hopworks might not be the best brewery in Portland but they do deserve attention. They will continue to get mine.

Mouthfeel- More than medium bodied with a slight grittiness from the oatmeal. Mild carbonation makes it seem thicker than it is. I write “slight grittiness” because it's pretty smooth as well. Nice dry finish.

Drinkability- Low ABV and an interesting palate makes this one go down easy. Around 5 bucks a bomber is reasonable but I would probably only buy this on tap.

Overall- Solid, good beer to really good beer. Different enough to be interesting but orthodox enough to accessible. I would give this a try.
