Smooth sweat stout with heavy coffee notes and light body, toasty oats, rye and wheats.

Pint on tap at Beer Revolution in Calgary. Pitch black with a creamy light chocolate brown head, great head retention.

Aroma is pungently roasted, tons of wood char, dark coffee, and cigar with an undercurrent of prunes and chocolate pudding. Taste-wise, this is weighted towards the ashy elements. Dry, somewhat harsh ... Mostly cacao powder, burnt nuts, strong coffee, and ashtray with the aforementioned sweet notes on the nose eventually coming through on the palate. Getting little in the way of berry or other fruit notes. Nice milk shake mouthfeel, though, smooth and rich, medium-bodied, feels like this ought to be sweeter than it is.

I'd be curious to taste these seven grains without such a potent dose of coffee in the mix. The latter flavor is too strong, masking the other goodies that one can sense are lurking beneath.

With espresso? Sounds perfect for beginning my day. (Okay, not actually.)

Super dark, as you'd expect. Tan head. Cold, dark coffee in beer form. I'm reminded that I don't like black coffee.

This one's not for me.

Served in a Spiegelau Stout glass. Appearance is a brownish-black with light tan lacing. Roasted malt on the nose. Very smooth mouthfeel, possibly from the variety of grains added. Bold taste of coffee leads to hints of chocolate malt.
