This is a solid American stout from an equally solid brewery! I honestly can't tell if there are 7 grains or 3 grains in this beer - it's delicious either way! It pours with a nice foamy head, lovely color, and definite notes of coffee. The flavor is truly satisfying - Stumptown coffee, hints of dark chocolate, and roasted malt. This is a winner in my books!

On tap at PreFunk. Sharp peppery taste, pours out black with small beige head. Aroma is normal stout dark malt, roast grains. Slick, slippery mouthfeel, lingering pepper/spicy finish. Spiciness is a nice touch to what is an otherwise solid stout, lip smacking good

Poured from 16oz tall can into my Selkirk Abbey tulip. ABV is listed at 5.8% and the can doesn't say "7-grain", but it's definitely Survival Stout with coffee, so -- I assume it's the same beer.

Appearance: black body with some brown highlights around the edges. Head is a finger of frothy tan foam. It's an attractive beer.

Smell: plenty of coffee aroma with a little chocolate underneath. This beer does a good job of employing the coffee element without being too astringent or harsh. I like it.

Taste: coffee is more subdued in the flavor than in the aroma, which works well here. The overall effect is a light mocha with a hint of vegetal, earthy hops. It's a very smooth stout that I quite enjoy.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a good carbonation and a nice creaminess for the style. I quite like it.

Overall: this beer, while good at the beginning, manages to keep growing on me. It's just a delightful and drinkable stout that, while not overly complex, is well-wrought and smooth as can be. Kudos!

Bottle into my fancypants new Sierra Nevada glass. Barley, wheat, oats, amaranth, quinoa, spelt and kaput are the seven grains.

Like coffee -- clear and brown as it's poured; pitch black in the glass. One inch of hyperactive foam pops and fizzles.

Major, acrid coffee aroma first. Dark chocolate and oats next. At once spicy and smooth.

The flavor is smoother, more balanced. Coffee, yes, then toasted wheat, sourdough, oatmeal and milk chocolate melding as one.

Silky medium-light body is a touch too thin. Alcohol is noticeable in the nose and on the tongue. Mild, tingly carbonation.

A decent coffee stout overall, and not too heavy or alcoholic. Easy to drink.
