A growler filled this morning, the very first pour from a new keg at HUB's BikeBar. Served in a couple mugs, refilled repeatedly. Opened and enjoyed while watching the bicycles pass by our front yard ~ Portland Sunday Parkways. Appropriate!

A: Autumnal amber with a subtle fiery glow, little hazy. Modest carbonation and a healthy khaki head, a dense foam just shy of a finger. Creamy lace in fine sheets.

S: Light and slightly honey-sweetened. Caramel malt and cereal grains. Very little of the hop aroma shows, a bit of a disappointment considering its fresh hop addition - but a nice snapping Oktoberfest regardless.

T: The requisite malty nuttiness with the addition of bright grassy-green hops that add a layer of bright bitterness to a sturdy and authentic seasonal. Mild pine and big spice emanate from those hops, excellent balance.

M: A bit thin across the tongue, but a building thickness. Starts with a nip of sharpness, but finishes smoother/cleaner. For the style, quite refreshing.

O: The more I have fresh-hopped beers, the more I appreciate them. This one is beautifully sessionable (at 5%). First tried at a local fresh hops festival in 2009, one I've had multiple times since. First growler of the fall; definitely not the last. Highly recommended for someone who likes an Oktoberfest with a modest jolt of hops.

On tap at Roscoes in PDX during the Fresh Hop Ale Summit

- Orangy malty light clear bubbly brew.. light tan head.... looks much like your typical Oktoberfest brew... dark copper.

- Sweet malts, syrupy sweet grains and breads... biscuit, and some grassy pine hop... roasty and bready.

- Smooth balanced... light bready and sweet biscuit malts, grassy earthy hop... certainly something unique for a fresh hop brew.

- Bitter drying, light bodied... slightly chewy and sticky..

- Overall not bad... but not great... but Hopworks did have many other fresh hop brews... and I bet they were all a lot better.

Fresh hop oktoberfest draft at Hopworks.

appearance - dark copper, transparent, good head and retention

smell - sweet and hoppy

taste - big malt profile with floral hops that punch through

mouthfeel - big body for 5.6%, moderate carbonation, slightly oily body

drinkability - feels like a big brew but the abv is moderate, has a good flavor profile, very tasty

Serving type: on-tap
