American Double / Imperial Stout |  10.50% ABV

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes/Commercial Description:
Imperial version of our 7-Grain Stout (minus the coffee) to help celebrate the 6th anniversary of Seattle’s famed Brouwer’s Café. The beer has a very complex roasted, fruity, brown sugar aroma and is full-bodied with flavors of roast barley, chocolate, cocoa nibs, molasses and dark fruit. It’s followed by a warming alcohol finish and lingering notes of all the aromas and flavors listed above.

Had on tap at Brouwer's Cafe. Review from notes.

A: Pours black with a small off-white head on top, decent retention, but very nice thin lacing all around the glass.

S: Some roasty malt to go along with a touch of hops. There is a bit of cocoa and chocolate, some dark fruits, and a bit of brown sugar.

T: Sweet upfront with more chocolate, a little bit of oat, a good bit of dark stone fruit, some brown sugar, caramel, and a little bit of licorice.

M: Medium to full bodied, slightly creamy texture to it. Pretty drinkable.

O: A big, flavorful beer, a nice treat.

Poured from a growler into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours pitch black with a thin, fine medium brown head that dissipates slowly to a ring around the glass and light lacing. Aroma of sweet toasted and dark malt, vanilla, fruit esters, alcohol. Taste follows with sweet dark and toasted malt, stone fruits, vanilla and chocolate. Mellow finish of well integrated dark fruit and toasted malt with a bit of an alchohol burn. Medium bodied with nice carbonation for a pleasant mouth feel. The fruit flavors are subtle, fading in and out of the taste with liquored fruit esters. A very enjoyable stout that I hope HUB will try again. This was on tap only and I had to make a special trip to get a growler fill and was glad I did.

On tap @ Bottleworks. Pours a deep black w/ garnet around the edges, nice mocha head.

Aroma is bitter chocolate, roasted malt.

Taste is dark chocolate malt, cocoa, just a hint of dark fruit. Bitter with a powdery quality.

Mouthfeel is thick, oily, dense w/ a surprisingly dry finish.

Overall a solid, dry imperial stout.

I saw this on the menu at the Burgundian in Seattle and was like "YUP." I do love me a good oatmeal stout and this is a one time, limited release brew made to celebrate Brouwer's pub 6th anniversary. It was only available at Bottleworks, the Burgundian and Brouwer's (all owned by the same folks). This is a top notch stout. Hints of chocolate, molasses and even kinda fruity. Very strong (10.5%), but smooth and easy to drink. Apparently it's a variation on HUB's 7 Grain Survival Stout, but without the coffee flavors. Its scarcity doesn't make it one of the best stouts ever or anything, but as a one time brew it's really good stuff.

On-tap at the eponymous Brouwer's in Seattle.

Pours a deep, heavy black, with a fine but solid brown head. Lace patterns morph through different organic shapes, and there's a very deep fine carbonation when the beer is tilted. It looks really intense.

Nose is sweet, with long strings of pungent liquorice and a hint of lemon is a weird up-tilt that cuts through the big, deep, sweet roasty imperial stout characters. It's big, but there's something a little one note about it: it doesn't develop over time. It's still very good, but it doesn't hit the true heights of the style.

Smooth, prickly entry to the brew, with rounded estery tones that almost suggest Belgian yeast. Banana, hints of booze, punctured by the persistent liquorice. This anise tone melds into the booze at the back, giving a lacing of sambuca or ouzo. Feel is very smooth, but the liquorice character almost numbs the palate after a while.

No doubt this is an impressive beer. It has big intense flavours (or at least one flavour, numbing and anaesthetic as it is). You wouldn't want more than one of these.

A: Poured pitch black with big carbonation leaving a big tan cap. Looking good!

S: Cocoa, roasted malts and an Earthiness to the beer

T: Had a smooth taste. Some really smooth cocoa meshed with a nice, bitter cocoa. Roasted malts, light dark fruits with light booze, Earth, toasted grains

M: Has a big body, plenty of taste, good carbonation, a smooth texture and feel. Very nice.

O: Good Impy Stout

Comes out of the tap an opaque warm sable with a thick, frothy tan head that leaves some good lacing. Smoky, chocolaty aroma has coffee and toffee undertones. Scrumptious mocha flavor has tones of quality coffee and semi-sweet chocolate. Lively, fizzy, slightly powdery texture leaves an elegant mocha finish. Pity this is a limited release - I feel quite fortunate that I got to drink it.
