Went here for the first time about a month ago, just reviewing now. Atmosphere is nothing special: typical modern urban interior decor - minimilastic, functional, but a bit cold. Interestingly they have a fridge near the hosts'/hostess' desk containing several special-premium micro and imported brews. If the atmosphere is nothing extraoridnary that's just fine, because the beer is truly excellent. Make sure that you get a sampler tray so that you can try each of their offerings; I didn't find any disappointments (quite far from it). Personal favorites are the Survival Seven Grain Stout (dark, stouty goodness with some interesting flavors), the IPA (spicy, hoppy goodness with an excellent malt backbone), the HUB Lager (refreshing, authentically styled goodness and great with just about anything), and the DOA (that's Deluxe Organic Ale, not Dead On Arrival - which this American strong ale most certainly is not). Service was friendly and prompt, and I really appreciated that our waitress was knowledgeable about the different beers on tap. Hot, too ;). Selection is good: all the expected beer styles are present, and the food selections - though not vast in number - are well-chosen. The food itself is excellent all around. Portions were far more generous than expected, and everything was top-notch and tasty. One must-have is the pint-o'-pretzels: salty, bready goodness. Mmmmh. The wings are also worth it. Pizzas looked awesome too, though I've yet to try any of their pies. Last but not least, the price: very reasonable, especially given the high-quality fare.
This place has instantly catapulted itself to the top of my destination list. Have been there three times now and will be visiting many more. You will NOT be disappointed.
Update June 2009: Time has only cemented and enhanced my initial impressions. I cannot recommend Hopworks highly enough - if you love the beer 'round here you must go.

This was stop #17 for my wife and I on a 21-day pub-crawl from Michigan to N. CA and OR. We stopped here early on a Saturday morning to try their beers as a kick-off to our Saturday version of our pub-crawl. The pub is situated in a storefront of a multi-story, modern building that looks like it has apartments above the brewery. The interior has a bicycling theme, and there is a long bar with some bar tables and stools that are separated from the larger dining area.
We ordered a flight of 10 beers out of the 15 that were available (there were also 3 Radlers or Ciders). All of the beers were brewed very well to their respective style, and all but two were well above average so that the 10 beers averaged out to a 3.8 out of a grading system with a 5.0 max score. (Any individual beer score above 4 is difficult to come by in our scoring, so this is a great score.) It was too early to eat, and only one person was at the time, but we didn’t even look at the menu, thus no food score is included in this review.
This was a great place to start our day, and definitely a place that we’d return to when we come back to Portland. This is a Must-Stop place.
