Walking a fine line of sweet malt and assertive hop character. A hop presence so enticing it truly is a work of art.

Pours a fairly cloudy orange-gold color with a compact white head that hangs around a bit, but gives off no real lacing.
Citrusy and fruity nose with what would seem as some solid malt in the background.
Hops are definitely a bit resiny with some citrus grapefruit character. A little sweetness to help with the balance, but not much. Decent medium to light body mouthfeel with a good carbonation level.
Decent overall impression, resiny hops skew this one towards a Double IPA, but it's not out of it's league. I could drink this one again.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine Volume III, Issue II:

Massive and dense cream-colored head, completely hazy orange-amber color that is most likely from the amount of hops used and obviously not filtered. Big whiffs in the nose of mango, ruby red grapefruit and lime zest from the hops, then there is a bit more fruitiness from the alcohol and a hint of toasted biscuit from the malt. Smooth and bitty with a creamy, slick mouthfeel and a medium to full body. The hops pop with a slightly coarse bite, pleasant but rough around the edges. Big toasted cracker maltiness throughout lays down a solid foundation. Hops stay dominant for the most part with a heavy- handed flavor that keeps on dropping citrus rind, hemp seed oil and blond tobacco flavors. The alcohol comes through after several sips to let you know it's there; warmth and a ripe fruitiness hit middle to end. Finishes bittersweet with a thick layer of hop flavor that sticks to the taste buds.

There is no fine line separating IPAs and Double IPAs, so this ends up being a hefty American IPA, a lovely one at that. Old-school rough-and-tumble style with hop bitterness and flavor fighting it out, and the blatant unfiltered look. If "punk rock" was a beer, it would be HopArt IPA.

Pours into my glass a super hazed dark orange with a half inch of creamy bone white head on top that leaves spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas are a mix of pine, grass and citrus upfront with herbal accents. Slightly spicy with a caramel and mild grainy kick.

First sip brings a mix of pine and citrus fruits upfront with spicy herbal hop oils. Slightly grassy it is met by a solid creamy malt featuring caramel and a light toast. Flows down and finishes with a solid bitter kick but is well balanced overall. A tasty IPA.

Mouthfeel is creamy and smooth with a great body that goes down easy. Overall, a tasty IPA that brings the hops but doesn't go overboard. Glad I had a chance to try it and thanks to RyanC84 for the opportunity.

A murky orange like a forming dawn sits with suds slipping down the sides of the glass. It's a beautiful IPA. Heady hops drip on the lacy sides. Kudos for the HopArt HopArt sticker! The only thing boring is the bottle cap.

Smells balanced, about which I'm uncertain because I yearn for more hop. It smells good an organic--there's a 'naturalness' to the nose and the taste. It's like perfectly balanced! It's odd. The taste is definitive (east coast) IPA: smooth assertive malt with leafy, earthy hop cones to it. This is a well-crafted beer.

Do I consider it in context of East Side IPAs or all IPAs? The category reads "American IPA" so I side with only the good side of great. Like other vegetation, there's factors within that west coast climate that provide its products an unfair advantage. Minus any sense of citrus, the beer feels good.

HopArt's a pretty awesome beer, and Coast is a pretty awesome brewery. Cheers!

Hazy amber color with an off-white head with decent retention and lacing. Light grapefruit and biscuit aromas. Seemed kind of light in the aroma department. Some grapefruit, a touch of lemon, and some biscuit in the taste. Light body with medium carbonation. A decent beer, but seemed like a Pale Ale with the alcohol of a IIPA.

I've had this a couple of times. It's good. It has a amber red appearance. On the last one, the smell was a bit muted for an IPA. The taste was a little sweeter with a big carmel taste. It might be because of the higher ABV. I had a good mouthfeel with good carbonation. Overall, I felt it was a good representation just not one of my favorites.

22oz into a snifter. Bottled less than a week ago on 1/17/10.

A: Ruby red grapefruit with a healthy head and lots of lacing. I am almost finished and the head has survived the entire 22oz.

S: Sweet, resin-like hops. Very earthy.

T: Brief initial sweetness then very bitter hops. Lots of grapefruit bite in the mouth. Finish is very dry, this is quite a hoppy beer. Reminds me a little of Ruination, but not quite that bitter.

M: Nice carbonation, solid mouthfeel.

D: Drinkability is decent, but the bitterness will take a toll on your palate. I think I need some water before my next pour.

I'm grateful to have tried this one so fresh. It is an excellent beer, and I think it would fit better as a DIPA than an American IPA. Its ABV (7.7%) matches other well known DIPAs, and the flavor will easily match up to the big boys.

Bottle poured into a GI tulip

A - Hazy, glowing orange with light carbonation. Huge white foamy head that left nice lacing as it settle down

S - Strong citrus nose with orange, tangerine and pineapple. There is a slight sweet malt backbone as well that you pick up in the nose

T - Bitter pine hits you initally before the orange peel and tangerine comes through in the middle. There is a nice malt backbone that gives it a slight caramel sweetness. The finish is bitter as pine and grapefruit linger on. Well balanced betweenmalt and hops and actually reminds me of a slightly more bitter Dreadnaught

MF - Medium body with a lot of carbonation to make it full and smooth. Has a nice hop resin that remains on the tongue in the finish.

O - A delicious almost DIPA like IPA that has a strong bitter hop presence with enough of a malt backbone to keep it balanced. Definitely pick up a bottle if you see it!

Got this on-tap at Charleston Beer Works in Charleston, SC.

Pours a very cloudy light copper color with a one-finger white head that dissipates into a wispy layer of bubbles on top. Lacing is very sticky.

The biggest smell is the bitterness. There are also some sweet malt and citrus aromas.

Tastes great. Solid hop flavors, very robust citrus and bitter notes throughout. The backbone of the beer is the sweet maltiness. Everything works together very well.

Mouthfeel is very good. It's got a solid thickness, and the carbonation is just right. Slides down very smoothly.

This is a very drinkable beer. Nothing is too overpowering, and as the bitter flavor increases throughout the sip it gets better and better.

Overall I was very happy while drinking this beer. Done very well, and seeing the 7.7% ABV surprised me, I would not have guessed it was that high. Definitely worth a shot.

Review from notes. Thanks to Jay for opening.

A: Pours a nice orange/copper color with a one finger off-white head. Decent lacing down the sides.

S: Some citrus aromas, mostly grapefruit and pineapple, with a good bit of caramel and bready malt.

T: Kind if a disappointment actually, not as hoppy as I was hoping. Not bad at all, just a bit on the malty side. Lots of caramel, graham cracker, and some bready malt. There was a little bit of citrus mixed in.

M: Medium bodied, slightly grainy, moderate carbonation with a slightly dry/sticky finish.

O: Had higher hopes having already sampled Boy King. Not sure on the age of the bottle, so would love to try it again based off other reviews.
