Our take on a kolsch style ale that is soft on the palate with a delicate malt flavor. Balanced with a touch of wheat and honey notes .Dry and wine like with a flowery hop finish.

Poured from a bottle (4/20/10) into a pint glass.

Clear golden pour. Flurry of bubble activity in the glass. Three fingers of plush white foam retain very well. Gobs of lacing stuck to the glass.

Aroma kind of reminds me of a pils. Somewhat wheaty and musty. A little grainy, as well. There's a honey-like sweetness, and like floral hops.

Flavorful kolsch. Sweet malt, some tart wheat, and a flowery hop finish.

Light bodied, appropriate carbonation. Tingly, yet still somehow smooth. Very refreshing. Highly drinkable, and surprisingly tasty for the style. I'll come back to this one as it starts to heat up.

Heard this one was good so I grabbed at a beer store on a work trip. 22oz bottle...

A: A perfectly clear light lemonade yellow with a 1/2 inch fluffy white head that fades at a decent pace to a bubbly lace on the brew. Decent.

S: Smells of some nice earthy rye with some banana in the middle and hints of barley and sugary malt on the backend. Very bready / earthy. Good.

T: Very balanced. Have not had much, if anything, in the style, but this seems like it does it justice. A bready grain mildly upfront with some barley and slight spices. Some wheat tastes on the backend. Good.

M: Medium body with a fantastic carbonation. A very grainy smooth finish. Very good.

D: Can't imagine going down much smoother. Perfect!

All in all, this is a very easy brew to drink. Not too familiar with the style, but this is amazingly balanced and I imagine this would represent the style very well. If you liek very good, drinkable, session brews, then definitely hunt this one. Otherwise, if you're a big beer guy, don't bother.

Big thanks to kkipple for sending this bottle along with the growler of Boy King - a couple of great beers.

A: Pours a cloudy yellow/light gold with a nice white head. Much hazier than your average kolsch.

S: Damn, this is great smelling beer. It smells almost like a saison with some peppery notes in there along with some lemon and grassiness.

T: Taste is lemony up front with a bit of grassy hops in the finish. Very nicely balanced and a lot more flavorful than your run-of-the-mill Kolsch.

M: Mouthfeel is a little on the thin side, but for a Kolsch it's just fine.

O: This is pretty much a perfect summer beer. A nice, refreshing, easy-to-drink kolsch that actually has some flavor to it. I tend to stay away from the style because most of them are bland and watery, but if more kolsches were like this, I'd drink them all summer long. Kudos to COAST for re-igniting my interest in a style I'd all but given up on.

22 oz. Bright gold pour, 1 finger of white foam. Actually sticks to the glass a bit.
Taste is malty, surprisingly so. Like a white wheat bread, very nice. Just hint of citrus, herbal grasses. Feels like a "meal", but is pretty light at the same time somehow. Very nice level of carbonation. Goes down great, but not like water per se.
I don't drink too many of the lighter styles such as this, but for a light session ale this would be great. Blows away the macros that could be considered "similar".

Growler shared by Ding at the BSP.

Pours a very light, clear straw color with a small white head that left decent lacing while maintaining a ring.

The aroma is very clean and dominated by light sweet malts with hints of light fruit sweetness and hops.

There is an apple sweetness to the taste that is complemented by just enough hops to leave a clean, crisp finish.

The mouthfeel is as crisp as I've ever had in a beer and leads to exceptional drinkability...I could have taken down this entire growler in short order. A great kolsch.

Bottle from thagr81us. Thanks Calton! I've been waiting to try this for a while. Bottled 23 Feb 2010.

Light yellow with a dense egg-shell white head with excellent retention. Moderate lacing is present as well. The nose is quite excellent. Light, bready, fruity, a little wheaty, a little honey, a little citrus, there's a lot going on. The hop character has a light earthy spice as well. As it warms, the floral honey character grows. I really dig this.

The palate opens light with a blend of bread, raw wheat, a mild grain character with some grainy astringency. Mildly fruity and honey-like in the mid-palate, my first few sips have a slight butteriness that decreases as it breathes. Hop character is light, a blend of delicate spices and a little citrus-like, more an herbal citrus rather than a fruity citrus. Light in body with moderate carbonation, this beer does feel a little slick on the palate. That slickness, along with the mild astringency, takes away from the beer. Enjoyable stuff, I'd drink an awful lot of it. I'd argue that the Stoudt's Koslch is better, though

Pale yellow in color, very nice one finger creamy white head, lots of carbonation. This looks very refreshing and adds some decent lacing down the glass as well.
On the aroma side of this I smell wheat and a wonderful herbal hop aroma.
The taste starts with wheat followed by a slight touch of honey and finishes with the slightest herbal hop flavor.
This is a light bodied beer, it's crisp too. Starts with the wheat and finishes with herbal, flowery hops and honey and leaves almost no aftertaste.
This is an extremely pleasant beer for the summer season and one I would love to enjoy again.

Finally getting to try some much heralded Coast beer...pretty much the highlight grab from my recent trip to South Carolina.

Poured from a 22 ounce bomber into my Gaffel Kolsch stange.

Beer pours a very effervescent, bright yellow with about two fingers of brilliant white head. Great head retention and very nice lacing.

Smell is crisp, clean and dry. The Hallertau hops are at the forefront providing that quintessential German aroma. The pale malts provide a hint of sweetness. The taste is dry and unmistakably a kolsch. The pale malts and German hops provide a light, soft taste. There's a hint of honey like sweetness at the end of each sip. Different, but very tasty.

The mouthfeel is light and eminently drinkable. The carbonation is very prominent and it provide a prickly quality to the mouthfeel.

Overall, a really nice kolsch. Nice to get a fresh bottle while in Charleston and enjoy this beer. I frequent Charleston a lot and will be drinking this one again and again.
