22oz. bottle received in a recent trade with raverjames. Thanks a lot man!

Pours a very dark hazelnut/chestnut brown color which is completely opaque with dark mahogany edges when held to a light source and a two finger beige head that quickly fades into a thin ring.

Roasted sweet chocolate malt aroma with touches of coffee, toffee, caramel, oatmeal and toast. The bittersweet dark chocolate notes are very prominent and the roastiness is subtle enough to not overpower the other scents. Slightly smokey with minimal earthy hops.

Roasty medium chocolate malt body that is a little thinner than I hoped with plenty of bittersweet dark chocolate, along with hints of hazelnut, rye, burnt toast, roasted coffee bean and toffee. The roasted malt presence is much more prominent than he aroma suggests slightly overpowering the silky chewy chocolate malt. Subtle rye sweetness and a dry finish.

Pours a very dark brown color, nearly opaque, with a tiny light tan head and uneven lacing.

Scent of fairly strong roasted malts, coffee, caramel, spicy hops, rye, and sweet milk chocolate. Very similar to a Porter, reminds me of Founders Porter with a nice bite of rye.

Taste of spicy hops, caramel, roasted malts, chocolate, rye, and coffee. Starts off with bitter roasted malts and coffee and finishes with a sweet hoppy rye flavor.

Mouthfeel is light bodied with a strong bite, a little overbearing, but pleasant.

Served from a growler purchased at the Charleston Beer Exchange on Nov 3 of this year. Pours a dark chocolate brown color with a fluffy cashmere head.

Aroma is bready and slightly chocolatey. A touch of metallic coffee as well. Toasty with the slightest bit or roast character as well. Smells nice.

Really nice flavor. Chocolatey with a nice toast character. I am not sure if I taste any rye but I certainly get a spit of spiciness that is typical in rye beers. Quite earthy and musty with earthy hoppiness. Coffee begins to emerge and makes its presence known as the beer warms.

A liked this one a lot. The spiciness really makes this an interesting brown ale that I am able to drink and drink lots of. COAST puts out awesome beers and this is just another one of those class act beers from the Charleston brewery.

Pours a dark brown color with a 1.5-finger tan head. The head recedes into a thin layer on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of a combination of roasted and toasted malts with good amounts of milk chocolate. There's not as much rye in the nose as I was expecting.

Tastes very good. Equal parts roasted and toasted malt flavors kick things off and are joined quickly by loads of milk chocolate flavors. Midway through the sip the rye spiciness kicks in and carries through to a solidly bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a solid thickness with grainy carbonation.

Drinkability is very good. I finished my glass quickly and could easily have a few more.

Overall this is one of the better brown ales I remember having although one could argue it's a hybrid with a stout or a porter. Either way, it's a delicious beer and one that's well worth a shot.

A nice local example of a brown ale, noticably spiced up from the rye. A dark brown pour with minimal head, a bit too cold from the tap, but gets much better as it warms up.

The nose is quite subdued, but the flavor is far from it. A very nice brown ale complimented by the peppery rye quite well. The mouth is nice and thick, finishing nicely dry which makes this very drinkable.

Obtained a growler on Rare Keg Thursday at the Piney Grove Green's in Columbia, SC.

Appearance - Dark caramel/brown color, light to moderate head formed upon the inital pour. Dimished quickly. Hard to determine the amount of carbonation but if I had to guess it would be light.

Smell - Big initial coffee nose with a faint grassy body as well. A toasty toffee nose overall.

Taste - Ample continuation of the coffee presence at the opening, a bold/bitter middle game where the hops make their presence known and a somewhat biting, almost tart finish from the rye addition.

Mouthfeel - A light watery mouthfeel. My only down-tick. Could have used more body to go along with the density present in the initial offering. Really lost it at the end.

Drinkability - I like browns, both DFH offerings being high on my list of great ones. This falls short of those, but is no slouch. I would prefer to have more of a mouthfeel.

Picked up a growler from CBX in Charleston and reviewed it within 24 hours.

A: Poured a dark brown color, but slightly translucent. Foamy head filled about 1/4 of the 20 oz glass i was using. No sediment or haze.

S: Lots of roasty scents, and a hint of something citrusy as well. The roastiness is unique, since it's more of a roasted malt scent, with little or none of the coffee that you'd expect. Overall good, and very interesting at that.

T: Taste matches up nicely to the scent. I'm enjoying a blend of malty, chocoaltey, bready sweetness with some good bitterness from the hops. The citrus and hop flavors are a bit more concealed, but still there. As it warmed, some coffee did begin to lurk out.

M: Very good texture. The foaminess that I thought was indicative of overcarbonation turned out to be just fine. Not too bubbley or flat, and not too thick or too thin.

D: Good drinkability. The 7% alcohol is well concealed with the balance of sweetness and bitterness. However, after 20oz, I wasn't 100% sure I was ready for another glass that size.

Had this beer at the West Ashley Good Beer Festival and just now getting down to reviewing my notes.

A - Pours dark brown but not quite stout-black, sort of surprising.

S - Wonderful aroma of roasted rye, caramel, malt, a little coffee.

T - The taste is sweet, brown sugar at first but with the rye creeping in to balance it off.

M - Medium bodied and medium carbonation.

Notes - Delicious, my only complaint is that it is not more widely distributed in the lowcountry.

Bottle courtesy of rnorgart poured into a pint glass.

Pours very, very dark for a brown ale - a deep mahogany - with a small, short-lived tan head that disappeared almost immediately and left no trace of lacing.

The aroma is where things started to get really interesting. There is a bunch of things going on, starting with whiffs of the toasted rye malts with dark chocolate and hints of coffee. Getting a little bit of caramel sweetness as well.

The taste is just as complex with the opening sweetness of caramel and chocolate giving way to a bit of roasted espresso and dark, dark malts. The finish is slightly bitter with the coffee and spicy with the malts. A whole lot going one but comes together very nicely.

The mouthfeel is well-carbonated despite the pour looking fairly dead. It's definitely on the full side of things in the body for a brown ale with such low ABV.

Despite being a pretty big beer for the style, it's still very drinkable. This is my first beer from COAST and I certainly look forward to trying others after this impressive brew.

I've had this on tap, and casked with chocolate nibs (probably my favorite experience, if only for the one-or-two night possibility), but this review is for one of the bottles released.

Poured out a dark brown with red hues around the edges, almost like a porter. Not a big head, but there are little swirls of tan bubbles lying on top the whole way down and some lacing. The smell is of earthy hops and spicy rye. I can even smell a bit of the roasted malts, I think there's a bit of chocolate rye in this, combining my two favorite smells. The taste is sweet with that rye kicker. I don't know how else to describe the taste of rye in beer for anyone who hasn't had it, but I love it, especially with a bit of roasted goodness. Very smooth drinker, with a wide range of different flavors to seek out. I could enjoy this in any setting. Too bad there probably aren't any more bottles, and I don't know about the current tap situation of this beer, but I suppose that's part of the joy of seasonal beers.

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a Dark brown color and a somewhat thick texture. There was a good half inch of head and some solid lacing.

S: Smelled of malt, coffee and mild hops.

T: A well done taste, with roasted malt, roasted coffee, hops and a sugary quality. Nicely balanced.

M: A decently carbonated beer with a smooth finish. Full-bodied.

D: This is a very drinkable beer and a good example of an American brown ale. A likable beer altogether.

Consumed from the tap at Barley's Taproom in Greenville on 11/05/08.

Rich and decadent from the pour, rich and brown in color. Some carbonation and a faint tan head left a light lacing.

Aromas thick with notes of the roasted malts, rye goodness, caramel, and some hop twang. Very rich and extremely well-balanced. Smooth on the palate with the caramel and chocolate intertwined with the rye notes. Solid sweetness, but balance is the name of the game here. Bold flavors but not overly so. Low-ish ABV makes this one an all-nighter.

While I am partial to the 32/50 Kolsch, this is perhaps my next favorite from Coast. Solid, solid offering.

on tap at the mellow mushroom

appearance: THick dark brown, really cloudy with a thick head.

smell: sweet and bitter chocolate along with a little maple

taste: rich and malty with just enough hops to bring some balance. Very strong chocolate, but not overly sweet.

Overall: really rich and delicious, very highly recommended offering from coast, they really are doing great things and especially in a state starved of people making beer within it.

a: comes with a meringue thick light-khaki head that recedes slowly, and leaves a very generous coating atop the deep ebony colored beer

s: superb balance of dark chocolate and bitter roast aromas, delicately smoky fresh coffee, mildly spicy rye presence, earthy pine hop aroma, full caramel malt backbone

m: assuming this is not nitro, the mouthfeel is even more impressive...tiny bubbles on the low side accompany a milkshake smooth body

t: much like the aroma, creamy chocolate malt with a balanced roasted barley note over a caramel malt sweetness, thick with malt and just a touch of rye towards the finish, very full flavored and delicious, hops earthy and leave a moderate bitterness in the roasty finish, smoky espresso emerges deep in the finish

d: heavy to the point that drinkability could be lower, but the straight deliciousness more than makes up for that

COAST continues to impress...this brown goes well beyond your typical example of the style, and arguably peers into porter territory, one of the more unique browns in quite some time

Sampled on tap at the Brewgrass festival in Asheville, North Carolina. Consumed on 09/20/2008 and reviewed from notes taken at the time.

I have had this before, straight out of the tanks, but hardly fair to review it in such capacity. Thrilled that Jamie and David made the drive up I bee lined for this booth and hung out for a bit getting more then my fair share  the pour was very nice, rich, semi translucent hazelnut brown color. Some carbonation, but hard to make anything out through the color. A smallish tan head came up over the top and let down slowly revealing some nice side glass lacing.

The aroma was rich as could be, big caramel and chocolate malt notes ruled the day here. A slight hint of a peppery like spice tingling the nose, had to be the rye. Very rich though, and very well balanced. The flavor was more of the same. Very nice, medium feel to this one, was just light enough to be able to be session able, but filling enough to thoroughly coat the palate and relieve give you a great sense on its presence. Very nice flavors here, as it works across the tongue. Big not of caramel and chocolate on the first sip, that faded and was quickly replaced by a hit of spicy rye. Very interesting mixture here, and if you had presented the idea of a chocolate rye brown ale to me I would have never thought it would have work, but hot damn, does it ever. One of the best tasting brown ales I have ever had, hell if it isn't the best. So well balanced with a delicate sweet and yet spicy profile that really is just a thrill to behold. Very easy to session this one as the ABV is low and the sippable factor is huge here.

Overall I would love to have this on tap locally. One of the finest beers I have tasted in quite a while, and the uniqueness here is unparallel. If you can get down to Charleston you have just got to try this, it is simply one of a kind.

Boy am I glad I could try this...quite interesting to say the least.

Pours a very dark brown with ruby edges and an off-white tannish head that settles to a ring. Smell reminds me somewhat of Bender, which can only be a good thing. Some chocolate and caramel, hints of roasted coffee, along with some spicy aromas that must be coming from the rye. Quite a journey when it comes to taste but it's great. Lots of malt flavors. It's sweet a good deal of the time but the rye adds this spice to the beer that is lovely. Great blend of flavors. Some chocolate, caramel, and toffee up front and definite coffee in the aftertaste. The spicy flavor from the rye is a great compliment to a darker beer. In many cases a hop bitterness would be where the spice comes through and while I love my hops this is some good stuff. Medium mouthfeel with medium carbonation. Smooth and mostly creamy aside from a great rye finish. It doesn't have a dryness but leaves an interesting sensation following the vevlety beginning. Very drinkable. I certainly got through a large pint with no problem and only hope to try this again in the future. Another winner from COAST!

Here's something I can't recall having -- a coffee rye beer. Lest I sound like a broken turntable, Coast earns major points from me for brewing something different for one of their first 3 beers.

This one is a clear, light brown beer with a fat tight tan head. Great retention off the tap, eventually grudgingly fades to about 2 centimeters and stays there.

Yeah, alright, this smells great... a lot like a smooth English porter with a a coffee kick at first, but then in comes the rye "heat" and things liven up considerably. Of course there's roasted malt, chocolate, and that singed note that's essential for this sort of thing.

Tastes very good. Coffee-malt, chocolate, char-roast and bittersweet malts upfront, a hint of bittering hops, and that elusive, mysterious rye flavor bouncing all over the place. Very smooth, the rye is a tease but doesn't overpower. It keeps things interesting, too. I kept going back for more and before I knew it I was standing in line for another glass....hmm...

Mouthfeel is smooth and carbonation is medium. Aftertaste is roasty coffee and bittersweet, but ultimately smooth. Actually rather cooling, oddly.

I really dug this beer. It's tasty, unique, daring, and flat works. I would classify this as a rye-porter if asked, but since I wasn't, let's just stick it in the "good beer" category and leave it at that. Go get you some.

This is an experimental beer tried by the Coast Brewing Company. Yet, I think they almost hit the nail on the head.
To preface this review, one of my all time favorite beers is Terrapin Wake "N" Bake Stout. This beer folds coffee into a beer without the horrible experience of drinking a cold brew with a shot of beer. I held this beer up to this standard, rightly or wrongly.

A. A great dark beer with a moderate head and decent lacing.

S. It says chocolate rye, but I smell coffee. Good strong cofee with a sweet aftertaste.

T. Coffee. Good healhty coffee. The ending is a little sharp, but faithful to the style.

M. Good. Keeping the comparison in mind, I wish the finish were softer and sweeter, but still great!!!

David, do this beer with an oatmeal mash and keep the rest the same. Then...put me down for a 6'er a week myself!!!``
