Had no intentions of cracking this one open today but with the great imperial stouts I've had out at the pub the past couple of nights ('09 Stout Trooper happened to be on tap!) my nights just feel empty this season when I DON'T drink a huge stout. Might as well try my hands at reviewing my first beer... bear with me.
Thanks to desaparecido for this one from a few months back. Grabbed this one straight from the cellar since it's approximately 55 degrees down there. Why not?
A: Poured slowly into a Stone IRS snifter. The half-inch tan head comes and goes quickly. Some sticky lacing clings to the side of the glass. Extremly dark. And consuming it on the darkest night outside in years... Actually, there's quite a bit of sediment at the bottom of the glass.
S: Sort-of sweet, mostly roasty, dark chocolate smell.
T: Medium to light carbonation. I would imagine the smokiness has faded somewhat at this point (this is the only time I've tried this beer), but there's still a prominent smoked flavor. A medium to full bodied stout, it almost prickles my tongue at first, but settles into a creamy, somewhat chewy puddle in my mouth. And then, a dry finish.
D: I had maybe 16 ounces myself, and poured two samples into brandy snifter's for my friends. I could drink more, and would definitely love to try it again, perhaps on tap, at some point. But it isn't up there with the Stout Trooper '09 from a couple days ago. I would love to try the barrel-aged versions.
