Extreme caramel malts with smoky undertones. Hops and Heather combine for bitterness and a tea-like character.

Deep mahogany red hue; thin yet creamy head; sheets of foam lining the glass. Rich, roasted grain smell; nutty and woody. Excellent roasted grain flavor; some char; mild malt sweetness offset with a slight bitterness. Heavy body; smooth and velvety.

Enjoyed this one on tap at Alchemy in Old Colorado in Colorado Springs. This is a very nice malt-forward beer, easy drinking and very flavorable.

Deep brown with ruby hints, thin head passable lacing.

Aroma is toffee melanoidin and earthy hops. Flavor is more of the same with notes of tobacco.

Mouthfeel medium + dissipating finish

Got a pint of '09 vintage at the brewery, pint bill signed around 3:50pm today!

A - Pours a deep mahogany with a decent tint of red, dark tan/light brown w/ red tint finger plus of head. Good retention, ok lacing.

S - Lots of sweet candy, sugar daddy flavor almost, mild scotch and sugary aged malts, a bit woody too.

T - Sweet but not overly sugary up front then definitely a more mellow sweet scotch and chocolate flavor, slightly boozy. Perhaps a little too mild

M - Certainly well carbonated, very drinkable

O - Quite good but fairly one dimensional. Very sweet and the scotch qualities have certainly mellowed over the past 4 years. Very drinkable - decent

Poured from a growler into a COAST shaker

A: Pours an amber-brown color with a moderate off-white head that dissipates pretty quickly, leaving decent lacing behind.

S: Bready maltiness, sweet caramel, slight roasted malt, and a bit of dark fruit.  Really nice balance between the maltiness and the sweetness.

T: Solid malt backbone with caramel and a bit of chocolate.  Slightly smokey toward the middle with maybe a touch of coffee, and finishes sweet and bready.  Pretty nice balance and transition.

M: On the heavier side of medium-bodied and slightly creamy, with ample carbonation.  Very nice feel overall.

D: Very easy to drink.  An excellent scotch ale that isn't overly malty or sweet and has a bit more complexity than a lot of others that I've tried over the years.  I had two glasses of this, and could easily have had another two.  Definitely worth trying!

Another great COAST beer made to style. Pours a brilliant, deep topaz with a glow and some orange highlights. Fairly short head, but the beer itself is so beautiful it deserves its marks. Smells of firm malt and a light spiciness. About what you'd expect from the style. The taste is very balanced and integrated. Firm malt, very smooth, with some light vinous notes, some spice- notably cinnamon and black pepper, and a long malty but relatively dry finish. Extremely smooth, but with a firm malt foundation that gives some snap without ever getting too sweet, chewy, or sticky. A very fine beer.

Served from tap into a New Belgium globe. Poured red-orange with a one finger off-white head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, caramel, wood, and honey. The flavor was of sweet malt, caramel, wood, honey, and smoke. It had a medium feel on the palate with mild carbonation. Overall this was a pretty good brew. It was very nicely balanced and had a good aroma to back up this fact. Having tried the Blended Aged version not too long ago, I can honestly say that this one was completely changed by the barrel/blending treatment. I really liked the smokey aspect I got on this one as it seemed to tie everything together. Definitely worth trying if you have not already.

Growler filled at the Lodge in Hilton Head, SC. Poured into a COAST Pint Glass.

A - Pours a hazy mahogany with a fluffy tan head that recedes slowly, leaving just a bit of spotty lacing.
S - Sweet caramel and toffee malt dominates, with a tiny bit of chocolate, and perhaps a whiff of smoke. The level of sweetness seems nicely balanced, and not a sugar/malt bomb.
T - Obviously malt heavy, with more toffee and caramel making up most of the flavor with some chocolate and roasted nuts. Hop presence is mostly of an orange peel variety, perhaps closer to a candied orange peel, and there's again a smoky quality in the finish. Very nice, and I enjoyed this more and more as the growler warmed up.
M - Smooth and creamy, with a medium body and moderate carbonation.
O - One of the better Scotch Ales I've had, this ranks right up there with Founder's Dirty Bastard. No surprise, another winner from COAST.

Dark copper color with a two finger white head. A pretty traditional looking and smelling scotch ale, but was really let down in the taste. A sugary caramel taste without much complexity. Some seemingly off flavors, metallic maybe. Huge fan of the brewery, but this didn't do it for me.

EDIT: Have had some more, and the metallic taste seemed to be an isolated issue. Unfortunately, it still doesn;t wow me like so much COAST beer does.
