Notes/Commercial Description:
A highly hopped, yet still balanced, double IPA. Multiple hop varieties, emphasizing Citra Hops, were used. We're lovin' the tropical goodness of this hop variety!

Ahh, Boy King. I have found my copious reviews of this this gem from the initial Batch 1 we knocked back on 4/30/2009. Grabbed a growler with my buddy Juan down from the legendary CBX and took it upstairs to the window seat of the Mellow Mushroom on King street in downtown Charleston to watch the world go by. The cute stoner waitress didn't even bat an eye when we told her "we're gonna drink this upstairs". Beautiful.

From notes:
**Batch 1**

A. Hazy, unfiltered rust-orange. Dirty. 3cm tall, fat, light tan head with minor lace that runs down the glass as you drink.

S. Hmm, weed! Raw, untamed HOP (yes, I got carried away) and massive 'green' nose. Grapefruit pith, sweet caramel malt supporting. xxxtreme. <--- ( I think it began to take hold right about here. - ed ). Big and lush, but balanced.

T. Initial huge lip-smacking hop rush; grapefruit & green. Hop flavor out the wazoo, whatever that is. Shockingly low actual bitterness, just a hophophippityhop flavor bludgeoning - in the best way. Ultimately, sweet and succulent.

M / D. Mid-high body, but not thick. Sweet, with layered, lush hop flavor. Stupidly drinkable for 9.5%. Coast hides their booze well, but this is just silly. We drank the growler in under a half hour if memory serves.

In sum: Boy King is a super drinkable, hop flavor bomb that avoids being bitter (Moylan's Hopsickle) or too sweet (Hopslam)
and is instead something you just want to horde to yerself. I must have more.

Looks great. Actually, looks like possibly the most delicious beer ever. Full disclosure: I had this via growler at GBX (what a place) one time and was supremely impressed. High hopes here. That thick froth has me convinced that it's a winner. It slowly dissipates as it sloths down the glass sides with a snail trail.

The smell is beautiful. Bottled 4/12, it smells like freshness should. The hops are fruity yet bitter: a balance of of medicine and citrusy fruit. An elixir. A potion.

A wow comes with each sip. Expectations met, I struggle to find imperfections. It's maybe a tad on the bitter side. Like a buddy mentioned, might honey morph this into Hopslam? I'd love to side-by-side these, but I was oh-so-happy to acquire this shortly after my Hopslam passed away. It's absolutely delicious, and i hold it second in a bottle only to Hopslam. Great beer in a great bottle from a great brewery from a great store. Thanks Zach. Thanks Mom. :-)

Interestingly, I recall it even better from a keg--that distinguishes it from Hopslam. It reminds me of an Idiot cask I enjoyed, which I also found better than a Hopslam keg or cask. If only I could taste a fresh Boy King cask....

Thanks to Exiled for sharing this growler.

The beer pours a hazy orange color with a white head. The aroma is pine and tropical fruit. The flavor is tropical fruit with some resiny and piney hops. There is also some caramel malt to keep the bitterness from being too high. Medium mouthfeel and low carbonation. A very nice, very fruity double IPA.

12oz. Pour into a Unibroue tulip.

Pours a brilliant tangerine orange color with little to no head. Nose is very subdued, some citrusy hops, but by no means overpowering. Taste is very pleasent: citrus hops backed by a huge sweet malt backbone. The taste is an interesting take on the DIPA genre. Hoppy enough to please with just a slight bitterness on the back end, but balanced enough not to turn your mouth inside out. None of the 9.6abv to be found. Heavy bodied, thick with high carbonation. Overall, a pleasing and easy to drink DIPA. Bravo!

Many thanks to HawkeyeDaz for the growler split.

Pours a frothy gold with pretty lacing. Partly cloudy in the glass.

The smell is king! Grapefruit and more citrus are really all there is... and all you need.

A plethora of those citrusy hops are on the tongue. It's a little sweet but more balanced than some hop bombs. Finishes clean and dry.

The growler held up nicely and we are rewarded with stellar carbonation and a pleasant mouthfeel. Just a winner anyway you slice it!

On-tap.

Pours an almost opaque golden-copper color with a one-finger slightly off-white head. The head recedes into a patchy layer on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of bright tropical fruit hop aromas with mild amounts of herbal hops. Backing things up are grainy pale malts.

Tastes similar to how it smells although the hop profile isn't quite as robust. Moderately dry pale malt flavors kick things off and are joined quickly by solid amounts of herbal hop flavors with smaller amounts of tropical fruit hops. Midway through the sip the malt flavors reassert themselves and the hop influence becomes more bitter. The bitterness intensifies through to the end until it reaches a solidly bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is very good. It's got a nice thickness with grainy carbonation.

Drinkability is also very good. I finished my glass quickly and could easily have a few more.

Overall this is very close to being a great beer and it's better than I remember from a growler. My one qualm is that the hop influence could be a bit cleaner in the flavor profile. Still, it's a very well done beer that's worth a shot.

Big thanks to Shane for splitting this bottle with me and to Jacob for sending it up here.

A: Pours a slightly hazy orange color with two fingers of thick foamy lace, reminds me of sea foam in the way it sits on top. Great retention, with the head keeping its thickness for quite some time, but despite this only spotty lacing.

S: Extremely fruity aroma. Lots of tropical fruits - grapefruit, pineapple, and orange with a a hint of pine mixed in. Slight alcohol warmth, but the aroma is extremely inviting.

T: It has a great bitterness right up front. There is a nice orange and orange zest as well as some grapefruit flavor mixed with some pine-resin. A bit of graham cracker malt balances the hops a bit.

M: Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation. Has a great creamy texture and a dry/bitter finish that lingers for quite some time.

O: Fantastic, very easy drinking with a great flavor profile.

Thanks to BeerByrd

A: Poured a deep, cloudy orange. The color/clarity made me wonder if it was unfiltered. Barely one finger of tan head that coated in wide lacing.

S: Smelled even before the pour, and noted hops at first, then citrus aroma. A second whiff after things settled out was more balanced. Now some malt can be noted as well, and it is sweet.

T: Expecting a “hop bomb” explosion, but got a wonderful blend of all the things I could smell. A strong finish of malt and citrus where I anticipated hop bitterness. Balance came to mind again. Nice lingering taste with that bold backbone.

M: Perfect carbonation and a little heavy feel, as I would expect from a DIPA. Nice!

O: Wow, get one. A quality brew I would enjoy having another one.

Pours a very nice orange-copper with a huge off-white head and plenty of lacing all the way down

strong citrus smells with a malt presence, but the hops are strongest with pineapple & mango

strong hops with orange peel & grapefruit and also malty backbone with creamy caramel note. very well balanced.

medium to full body. thick and creamy. velvety for an IPA. nice.

this is a great beer. its been a while since I've had an IPA with this kind of creamy, malty backbone. can't wait to get back over to the pub for another pint.
