Heavy on hops with a slight caramel maltiness. Striking orange-red color. Big on Chinook Hops.

As a throwback taste for hop heads of yester-year, Coast Brewing brings us a hoppy red ale that Chinook me all night long.

And its with a deep amber hue and a slight fog that gives Carnie Fire a hearty appearance. As its foamy ivory froth builds, so does a piney, citrusy and herbal scent that mingles with toffee, nutty and toasty aromas. The early palate takes a more malty route with caramel, toffee and brown sugar giving sweeter and more savory first impressions.

As the sweetness stews on the middle palate, its the rise of hops that give the session balance and eventually a hop dominant taste. Orange peel, grapefruit and a nearly lemony taste develops into an aggressive bitterness of pine sap, peppery grasses and a generally woodsy bite. Toasty, nutty and persistent with remnants of malt, the late palate is certainly bitter but not without balance.

Medium bodied and drinking more hearty than its body would suggest, the red IPA finishes with a strong and bitey hop bitterness that's more aggressive than necessary. But its resinous taste is a throwback to a time when bitterness was prized and malt as complementary.

Pours copper in color with a slight tan head. Head gives way to good lacing. Nose is malty, however the taste is very malty with a bitterness on the back end. Great beer

Appearance: Pours a slightly hazy copper color with a nice ecru head; quite a few strands of lace

Smell: Caramel malts along with citrusy hops, featuring tangerine, lemon and grapefruit aromatics

Taste: Caramel and toasted malt forward with a budding piney aspect; citrus flavors also build through the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: While I typically avoid Amber Ales, I had a hunch that Coast would brew a good one and my guess was affirmed
