According to Coast, this is their Smoked Rye: "December 2011: 20% fermented in 2nd use bourbon barrel and blended". Let's go!
From a lil growler purchased at Green's in Columbia. Dumped unceremoniously into a Tripel Karmeliet goblet.
A. Standard Coast unfiltered rough dull orange-gold. Kind of muddy looking, really. Short white head gives up some lace around the edges. Eternal retention and sticky lace does help keep the appearance score from the basement.
S. Unusual, fore and aft. Vague green-grapefruit hops immediately veer into an earthy, musty, grainy nose. Try hard and you can even tease out a hint of the smoke. Slightly toasty malt provides sweetness, but it seems a little soapy at first till the aroma opens up. The barrel aging is extremely subtle, but when you look for it, you may find bits of oak and vanilla. This beer will probably be polarizing. Interestingly, very reminiscent of the Harpoon Spruce Tip I had recently.
T. Initially medium-malt-sweet, but the rye is obviously evident, lending a more earthy / cool / damp flavor than spicy. The cherrywood smoked malt is well hidden; you have to look to find it and it would be easy to pass over. The barrel notes are even tougher to pull out, but there is a bit of woodiness that can easily be imagined (or imagined away). Getting a Pretty Things Fieldmouse Farewell / NBB Hoptober vibe to this thing, the oats and rye complement the barley well. This is pretty left-field stuff, but is highly complex. Give it time and you may be rewarded. I dig the low ABV, which means this 32oz growler can be drunk alone and I can still go buy groceries later. Right? Right.
M / O. No complaints on the mouthfeel. Medium-light body and a crisp fullsomeness from the carbonation means this goes down easy. Think of it as some weird American Rye Bitter and you may fare better, this is food and Imperial pint style beer. Finish is semi-sweet with hints of earthy vanilla and smoke.
I am not totally convinced the barrel aging is needed or helpful in this case, but I haven't had the non barrel aged version, either...
Bottom line: A fun experiment that comes out again in Coast's favor. It's a testament to David's skills as a brewer that all his weird little one-offs are good, if not great. I wouldn't seek this one out, but given that it's only been released once in limited quantity, you probably can't anyway! Happy new year, Coast, and any readers who've stuck this far.

I didn't think that the "Barrel-Aged" version was different enough to warrant a unique listing, but a tick is a tick!
A - Pours a cloudy orange-yellow with a creamy white head that recedes to a thin haze and leaves lots of soapy lacing clinging to the glass.
S - Aromas of sweet cracker malt, yeast, spices, and a bit of underlying smoke with a touch of wood.
T - Wow, what an interesting beer. The sweet malt leads to the fruity Belgian yeast and is then followed up with the smoke flavor. The smoke is interesting, and really goes on a roller-coaster of flavor itself ; the initial subtle smokiness is followed by a sweetness, and then a distinctive smoked ham character finishes is off and lingers on the palate. It's amazing the amount of flavor coaxed out of a (relatively) low ABV beer. Not getting a ton of wood character, I think it helps the mouthfeel more then anything (see below).
M - Smooth and very creamy, with a medium mouth-feel and lower carbonation then the regular version. The barrel-aging somehow makes this even more sessionable, I drank the whole 32oz growler quickly!
O - I liked it, but not as much as the regular version. Bit of a trade off here, this one is easier-drinking, but lacks the somewhat intense smoke character I've come to love. Still nice!
