22oz bottle into a snifter
Bottled on: 11/27/12
A: Pours a jet black with only the slightest browning on the edges when held up to light. 1/2 fingers width of dark mocha colored head is fizzy, and dissipates down to almost nothing very quickly. Leaves effectively zero lacing, and only faint alcohol legs.
S: Big sweet bourbon notes accompany an equally large roasted character. I also get hints of raw oak, coffee, vanilla, booze. Wonderful.
T: Huge roasted malt flavors, along with bakers chocolate and coffee. Bourbon oak and vanilla flavors linger in the aftertaste. I also get hints of dark fruit, apple (which I also picked up in the non BA version), raw oak. Bourbon notes become much more prominent as it warms. As it warms to room temperature, this becomes absolutely fantastic. Not only do the bourbon notes become more pronounced, but also sweet malt flavors strengthen. Wonderful bourbon notes here, strong but not overpowering, which compliment, rather than dominate, the base beer.
M/D: Exquisitely smooth, carbonation is appropriately low, full bodied, with a thick, slightly chewy mouthfeel.
O: The original Blackbeerd is a very solid and a very good IS, but nothing exceptional, and rather one dimensional in that its huge on the roasted notes. This, on the other hand, is a special beer. The barrel has done wonders to this one, by adding a depth of flavor and a complexity to the base beer, complimenting it perfectly. Very well done, so glad I live local and get the opportunity to enjoy this one!

Big thanks goes out to funkydelic for sharing this one during one of our random Sunday tastings! Served from bottle into Sweetwater 15th Anniversary snifter. Poured pitch black with a half finger tan head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained excellent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, roasted malt, dark fruit, wood, sweet alcohol, caramel, and subtle metallic. The flavor was of sweet malt, roasted malt, dark chocolate, dark fruit, caramel, wood, and sweet alcohol. It had a medium feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was a pretty good brew. When I heard the barrels they were using for this year’s BA release I was actually quite excited. Lucky for me this one delivered! A really nice well balanced flavor going on here with just the right touch of sweetness and roastiness going on to balance each other out. There was also a nice touch of caramel going on that really made this one stand out. Glad to see COAST still doing great things with their barrel program and can’t wait to see what they have in-store for next year.
