Style | ABV
Irish Dry Stout |  4.10% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Robust flavors of coffee and chocolate are the signature of this style. Black as night and smooth as silk, this dry Irish stout is injected with Nitrogen and served through a draught spout for a cascading effect that makes our Stout as visually appealing as it is delicious. The lower alcohol content makes it a perfect session beer for hours of conversation with friends.

Had it in a sampler at the brewpub, 4/8/11.

It looks gorgeous, black with a creamy tan head. The nose is light coffee and chocolate, inviting me in. The first impression of the flavor is just a bit watery, filled in with some malt sweetness and that choco-coffee bit again. but there's also some uninvited fruitiness that doesn't blend in so well.

Overall, very easily drinking with plenty of character, but a little thin. It is definitely a session beer, as advertised, but could be improved, I think.

Served in a large, curvy stout pint at the SanTan brewpub in Chandler.

Midnight black -- an absorbing abyss, though faint orange highlights peek through the bottom of the glass. One finger of the creamiest tan foam looks like you could sleep on it and shows no signs of going anywhere, like, ever.

Roasty nose. Toasted wheat, coffee beans, peanuts. A nice, crisp toasty graininess.

The flavor of this Irish Dry isn’t exactly dry. Fairly sweet at the finish, with lingering notes of cocoa. A bit of milk chocolate, weak coffee and some burnt bread can also be picked up.

Standard nitro stout feel: soft, frothy, creamy, smooth. It’s like velvet on the tongue, with almost no carbonation.

A step up from Guinness, but not a big step. Very drinkable, though. Goes down fast and looks good doing it.

Nearly black with a small head, looks cool from the nitro tap.

Smell is of roasted coffee, some bittersweet chocolate, and maybe some slight sweetness of a dark fruit.

Taste follow suit of the smell although none of the flavors are dominant. They all seem to play their part in harmony with each other. The flavors are not intense like an imperial version, but more like a regular version, perfect for the AZ heat.

Mouthfeel is creamy as would be expected from the nitro tap and it goes down smooth. Not heavy at all. Not sure what the abv on this is, but it cant be really high. This one is a session stout for sure.

Very dark brown with a wee bit of foam, but not much. You can just barely see some light through the stuff. Smells lightly of roasted coffee, nuts, chocolate, carmel. Tastes just as it smells, but not intensely. The flavors are light and the beer is closer to a porter than a stout. Mouthfeel is creamy and smooth, you don't really taste the alcohol much, and it would be no problem to drink more than one of these.

Sampled on tap at SanTan Brewing; March 2011
The beer shows a clear, red-brown color when held up to the light, but otherwise is a surprisingly light shade of dark that only gets to a dark, burnt amber color. A tightly beaded, nitrogen infused, creamy, pale brown tinged, tan head sits on top of my beer as it arrives from the tap. There is a huge grainy note to this beer, it leans towards being roasted, but this beer is definitely not really a roasted, stout like beer as one might expect. There is a dry roasted quality to the finish that is actually quite subtle.

The beer feels very smooth and has a very light roast character to it that seems more like toasted grain than the burnt character one would expect. There is not a ton of flavor to this beer, it is better than Guinness draft, but not nearly as robust or flavorful as I would prefer. It is light and quaffable and has just enough texture to not be overly watery.

This is quite light and quaffable, but really seems to miss the mark of the Dry Stout style entirely. It seems to sort of be a watered down Porter of some sort, or perhaps, with a bunch of hindsight, this really is more like a dark mild than anything.

I've had this at SanTan a few times now, and I have to say it's not quite what I'm used to for an irish dry stout. It has a more chocolate flavors and tastes similar to a porter. I like the carbonation added to this beer, it definitely adds a characteristic not always found in a beer this dark.

I should also note- you can drink pint after pint of it, very drinkable. Must have low al%.
