Notes/Commercial Description:
Warm copper amber in color, SanTan brewers have re-defined this classic English Ale. An intense bitterness derived from the distinct citrus/pine flavor of Pacific Northwest Hops. A dry, crisp malt character & aggressive alcohol dominate our I.P.A. and make this bitter beer a hop-head’s passion!

Can as part of my Arizona adventure, served in shaker pint. A "balance" meaning bad DIPA. This is a malt bomb. Hops please, they go in IPAs. Not a repeat for me.

Beer is amber and hazy with a tan head of small and medium bubbles.

Aroma is mildly bitter / hoppy with a lot of malt.

Beer is medium in body, sweet and bitter with almost no hop flavors. I won't have this again, this brewery in general is striking out with me.

poured from the can into a pint glass

A - Pours a textbook coppery-orange with waves of hazy yeast coming through the otherwise perfectly clear beer. A few bubbles rise to the rocky, two-finger, off-white head. Head stays intact all the way down the glass. Leaves behind thick rings of lacing.

S - A bit of citrus fruit on a caramel malt background.

T - Caramel malt upfront. The body is a rather nice blend of blend orange-mango hop notes on a caramel malt backbone. Splash of hops as the beer passes over the back of the tongue fades into a bitter orange mango finish.

M - Medium bodied with ample carbonation. A little creamy, but lacks the chewiness I look for in a well-crafted IPA.

Despite being a great looking IPA, Hop Shock fails to excel enough in all the other departments to keep up with the stiff competition. Overall this is a decent IPA and I don't regret my decision to pick up a six of it while I was in Phoenix. However, it doesn't deliver anything memorable enough to make me lament not having it here in New Mexico. Extra points for the canned option though, which makes it better suited for hiking.

As always, poured into an ice cold, pint glass from my freezer..

Hop Shock is an absolutely incredible IPA. This is most likely the truest to form, real British (American made) IPA, that you can get here in the Southwest, USA! Do some homework about the original IPA's, they were England's pale ales created with extra hops, which is an earthy preservative, for the long trip to India, which had British colonies & troops, who wanted English pale ales.

I'm a modern fellow from Arizona, I love different beers & so far this is my favorite canned beer of all time. It's dry, but has so much flavor as you're consuming it, it's simply delicious! This is hops without fruity notes, incredible beer!
