Poured a deep reddish brown with a one finger red tinted off-white head. Very interesting look, quite different from a lot of other DIPAs and even red ales I've had, it looks quite nice. Scents of grapefruit, citrus, pineapple, pine and wet grass with hints of tropical fruit and faint notes of brown sugar. A typical DIPA aroma, nothing to out of the ordinary, but nothing wrong either. It's pleasant. Taste begins with bitter citrus pith, grapefruit pith, and pine resin, adding some flavors of grapefruit juice and hints of roasted malt in the middle and finishing bitter, with a lingering bitter aftertaste. Other than the hints of roasted malt the flavor is typical for a West Coast DIPA, but the roasted notes do contribute a bit of depth to an otherwise standard flavor profile. Mouthfeel is medium-light bodied with moderate carbonation and an oily/slick mouthfeel. True to style, easy to drink, nothing off about it. Overall this is a good DIPA. It's standard to be sure, and doesn't do a whole lot to stand out other than adding some roasted malt, but that's enough to make it worth trying. There are better DIPAs out there, but this one isn't bad.

I tried this beer at Monsterland before it closed in downtown Mesa. My overall impression was simply, "Yum". It seemed to hit all the right spots with me. It seemed smooth. It seemed chocolaty. It was so enjoyable, instead of looking at the menu for another variety, I simply ordered another one.

Since then, I've started brewing my own home brews and find that the recipe I keep trying to create is the memory of enjoying this beer.

Bravo San Tan Brewing Company!

Poured from my growler into a Stone Imperial glass. A very dark brown, almost black, color. Head is a beautiful two fingers of cocoa colored head that is creamy in appearance. Lace is sticking very well with this quickly receding head.

Smell is dark roasted malts, chocolate and some char. I smell hop aromas of pine sap, orange, pink grapefruit and pineapple.

Taste is just like the smell. Charred wood or roasted coffee beans and some chocolate. Hops take over and you taste the pineapple and bitter but sweet pink grapefruit. This is very impressive for a local IPA.

Mouth is medium with bright carbonation. Body is a bit on the full side and the finish is quite long and wet. Some alcohol burn with the swallow but that's just fine with me.

Overall I have been avoiding this all month. Mainly because of the price but also because there aren't too many local IPA's that have impressed me. This one impressed!! It really tasted a lot like Stone More Brown Than Black Collaboration. All the San Tan stuff I have tried from cans has been quite mediocre, maybe I need to research them some more. Try this if you can!!

This is my first growler. Purchased from Total Wine. Poured from a growler into a pint glass.

A: Got a 1 and 1/2 finger tan head that didn't stick around but didn't completely vanish. It is not red but a dark brown with a slight maroon tint. A fair amount of lacing sticks to the glass.

S: Big grapefruit smell. Very nice.

T: Big upfront grapefruit taste. Smooth. OK, blood orange taste backs it up slighly. Not piney but leaves a resin taste in mouth.

M: Easy to drink. Refreshing. Bitter but not overly bitter. The relatively high alcohol content of this beer is not noticable but hidden in the fruity taste and smell of the hops. Juicey upfront and slightly dry afterwards.

O: I like it. Compare it to a Sierra Nevada Torpedo and it is simular in but very different. This is more bitter and has a lighter mouth feel.

Don't really see where the "blood red" comes from, its a dark brown (in my glass it looks black but its more of a mahogany. Ruby red grapefruit right up front in the nose. Tangerine, lemon, caramel malts, and some more orangey citrus looming in the back. The taste is a lot maltier than I expected right up front but that gives way almost immediately to sharp grapefruit hops with hints of tangelo, lemon, slight lime flavors, and a bit of a piney kick hovering in the background. The grapefruit lingers and blends with flavors of the caramel malts to stick around on the tongue. Its a damn good IPA, not quite what I expected but still another fine example from (in my opinion) Arizona's masters of the hop.
