Sampled at 1702; February 2011
Arrives from the tap with a dark, concentrated brown color that shows a clear, rich brown hue when held up to the light. The head is a lightly browned, darker tan colored head. The aroma smells of toasted malt character that has lots of browned bread character. There is an underlying fruitiness that almost has a tartness to it and it reminds of plums, a suggestion of cherries and lightly roasted raisins.

Lightly sweet tasting and actually quite fruity with notes of plums and rum soaked raisins (though without the heat), accentuating brown sugar notes, chewy toasted brown grain flavors, lots of nutty notes (almost hazelnut like in character). At times the body of this can seem somewhat rich, but at others it seems like it is a bit on the thin side for a beer of this type; there is a touch of creaminess to the texture and the carbonation is fairly slight. There is a touch of herbal, definitely bitter (but not overly so) hop character in this beer that supports the more dominant malt / sweet character of this beer. A touch of dark grain character also seems to contribute a bit to the bitterness in the finish. As the beer warms a touch of cola like spiciness comes out and this seems to be accentuated by the lightly sweet malt and toasted grain edge to the finish.

Not bad, but it doesn't seem to quite do it for me either; the biggest thing for me is that it seems to get quite thin after only a couple sips and the flavors suggest / require a big, chewy beer to support the character properly.

It's not my favorite brew from SanTan. It's nice, bold and full of flavor, but it seems to kind peter-out about half way through. I was expecting a mouth full of flavor with some thickness (perverts), but it just didn't have that feel to it. It is worth a taste, but just lower your expectations a little.

WIFE TAKE: What the hell, isn't that racist (I have no idea what she is talking about)

CAN:"Crafted on 10/14/14." 12 fl oz. Aluminum, with a pull-tab. Okay label art and design.

Reviewed live as a "porter brewed with chocolate." 6.90% ABV. Served cold into a pilsner glass in Austin, TX. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: Five fingers wide. Khaki colour. Nice creaminess and thickness. Has a smooth, even complexion and a nice supple soft consistency. Retains well - for at least 5-6 minutes.

BODY: Dark auburn. Nontransparent but translucent. No yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible. It's not the dark black colour I expected, but it's decent-looking.

Appears well-carbonated. It's not unique or special, but it has a nice head.

AROMA: Amber malts, vague fruit, berries, caramel, faint plum, light bread crust, a kiss of brown sugar, and perhaps a bit of anise. As for chocolate, I find none. And I don't find the signature dark malts or chocolate malts you'd expect in a porter, either. It has some herbal hop character, though. If anything, it smells like more of an amber or English style winter warmer. I do find it appealing though; it's just an abysmal aroma for a purported chocolate - nay, strike that - double chocolate - porter. Fairly toasty. I do find some bright ale esters and herbal character from the yeast.

No alcohol or off-notes are detectable. It's a pleasant aroma overall of mild strength.

TASTE: Caramel, amber malts, herbal hop notes, English yeast character, bread crust, hints of brown sugar, a trace of licorice/anise, toasted grains...yeah, this just plain isn't a porter. Nor is it chocolatey - at all. It's decently balanced, with an English winter warmer vibe and plenty of herbal and estery character. Hints of rosewood lend the flavour profile pleasant cohesion. Notes of fig and faint plum on the periphery. It's definitely fruity, in a vague nondistinct sense.

Overall, it's decently balanced (outside of style conventions), and I find it fairly well built so long as we disregard its alleged style. I do like it, but it's far from complex/intricate, subtle, or nuanced, and while it's certainly cohesive, it never feels like a gestalt whole.

TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, overcarbonated, lightly refreshing, medium-bodied, and aptly thick. Not too overbearing or heavy on the palate. It's not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, scratchy, or rough. Could be creamier and/or softer.

This texture is a nice companion to the taste, but it's worth saying it's not apt for an ostensible porter by any means. Style aside, the execution is decent but not ideal.

OVERALL: The rosewood is lovely, and it's a drinkable...whatever it is. But it's terrible for a purported porter - let alone double chocolate porter. If I served you this blind, you wouldn't tell me you tasted chocolate. It's nice for what it is, and I do like it, but I wouldn't get it again or recommend it to friends. The misleading marketing doesn't affect my rating. Not sure these brewers know what they're doing, but this beer at least turned out okay.

Expected more chocolate taste. A little thin and plain.
