Have been back a couple more times. No disasters, but the service is still slow as hell.
---
OK, stopped in again today 11/12 (this place was Plan B because Papago didn't have the kitchen open until 4pm) and it was marginally better. Place was half full, echoing with loud music and with nothing but concrete and glass, was pretty loud.

Tried the stout, which was good but more like a porter, and the hopshock, which was moderately hoppy but not overwhelming. Also had a couple sips of my wife's pale ale, which was pretty hoppy for a pale ale.

Problem was, I ordered a pizza and got a hamburger. They comped it and brought the pizza a few minutes later. Also forgot my wife's salad dressing and had to ask twice for it. Father-in-law said his rueben sandwich was good, wife said her sandwich was good but not outstanding, and my pizza was OK but bland. They should taste a Papago pizza for a lesson on the topic. But at least all the beers were working and the whole menu was up and running. Now if they could just bring what you order the first time, they might have something.

---
(10/17) I wonder what it's like to order something from San Tan and actually get it. My wife and I ate there a week after they opened, and I must say it was borderline miserable. Parking was impossible, and the place was packed at 5:30. The pale ale was not available. We sat on the patio and I ordered the IPA and a glass of water, and my wife ordered a cider that wasn't on the menu.

Then we got the food menu, all 25% of it. Yes, 3/4 of the menu advertised on the website was unavailable. They had about 6 entrees, and about 6 appetizers, and that was it. Well, we placed our orders and the beers arrived, in 16-oz pint glasses. I took a sip of my "IPA" and thought "Either this is the worst IPA I've ever had, or they brought me a Sunspot Gold by mistake." It was cold, and so I waited for it to gain some flavor as it warmed up. No such luck. No water showed up, either.

After the server stood in the doorway for awhile holding our food and having a conversation with some other servers, our food arrived, mine with fries but no ketchup. Still no water, and I asked for it a third time. My wife noted that they brought her the wrong salad, but she was OK with it. A second server came onto the patio to ask if anyone needed anything. I raised my hand and gestured to him twice, but he ignored me. Finally I walked by him to go inside ask one of the door guys to get me some ketchup. The door guy showed up with the ketchup, just as our server showed up with the water. The food was pretty decent (cajun chicken sandwich), but my beer was weak, weak, weak, and 16 ounces of weak beer seems more like a gallon to suffer through.

When the bill arrived, it listed my beer as a Sunspot Gold. I knew it. Wrong beer for me and wrong entree for my wife. The total was $23 for two entrees and two beers (beers were $3), and so the price was right. So aside from screwing up each of our orders, bad service, and bad parking, everything else was great.

I sent them a polite email telling them about our negative experience, and never heard back from them. (3,145 characters)

I previously had an extremely bad experience at San Tan, and swore that I would never go back. However, after talking to a manager at one of the local beer tastings, she swore that they had fixed everything. So we recently went again, mainly to have some of the pineapple hefe. This time it wasn't too bad. Our server was not very attentive, but the food was good and everything came out correctly and very quickly. I am glad that I gave them a second chance, and I will more than likely go there again. I think that the food is little on the pricey side, but overall it was a decent. (584 characters)

Like the other reviewers I have been to Santan a few times and it has been hit or miss on the beer and the food. I have to give Anthony (the brewer) some slack since he needs some time to tweak his recipes on the new brewing system. The first time I ordered the brown ale, it was blonde!!! The second time it was the right color. Service is excellent if you sit at the bar, but sitting at a table or even worse, on the patio can be spotty. Food has been nothing to write home about. The burger was huge and so was the bun. Way too big, leave some room for the beer. They do have a couple of guest taps which is refreshing to see at a brewpub. If you are in the area I would recomend it since there really is nothing else nearby. (728 characters)

Last time we were in Phoenix we stopped in and had dinner. Our son had recommended Santan to us. This brewery is a sports bar and that is my biggest complaint about it. The TVs were so loud you really couldn't talk at all. It was very annoying not to be able to get away from the horrible noise. I mean really uncomfortable noise. Otherwise the service was excellent and the food was very good. I had fish and chips which I would order again if I can talk myself into going back there and have ear plugs with me. My husband had the Ribeye smoked dip wrap and loved it. Their beer selection was a little above average. I have been to many sports bars and have never been in one that was as noisy as this one. It really isn't necessary for the TVs to be so loud. Maybe out on the patio it would have been better but it was a cold night so inside seating was necessary. (866 characters)

Stopped by quickly for a beer and a bite to eat. I ordered their IPA and a plate of nachos. The beer was pretty good. I wouldn't call it award winning, but certainly was enjoyable, I would order it again. The nachos were HUGE, and very good. The only real knock on the place I would have is that it is very loud. There were a lot of people in there the night we went, but there is a lot of glass on the walls, and concrete floors which I am sure added to the noise level. All in all, I liked this place, and I will certainly go back. I didn't think it was awesome, but it is very new, and this it has a lot of potent ional. (623 characters)

Went there last weekend on Sunday while I was there for a family wedding. The only local brewery I got to visit, because it was relatively close to the hotel.

Atmosphere was nice. In terms of scale and quality, the location reminds of Silver City in Silverdale, WA. Kinda hip, functional location with prominent brewing facilities.

Quality of both the food and the beer was good. Service was not. They took a bit to take our order, took longer to deliver it, and never gave us little details like napkins or silverware. I had to go and find it and say, "Hey, can I have that?"

Selection was good. Menu is large and varied, and they have a nice selection of styles on tap. I was disappointed their black IPA nitro was out when I was there.

Food was good. There were five of us, and everything we ordered was different, and all of it was well prepared and tasty. Prices seemed more than reasonable. I think beers were only $3.50 a pint. (938 characters)

This is my third time at this place and every time the experience has been different. The first time I visited was more than a year ago so I won't include that visit.

Two weeks ago my wife and I stopped in for a couple of beers and an appetizer, The beers I had were good, a nice hefe, and an above average pale ale. The beer my wife picked, strawberry hefe tasted like chapstick. The appetizer, calamari, was okay, better than most places but nothing to write home about. The service sucked as our waiter seemed anxious to get us out of there so some regular customers could sit at our table. Too bad b/c he would have gotten an excellent tip had he encouraged us to stay.

Tonight I went here by myself to watch the game have a couple of brews and some dinner.
I sat at the bar and the service was top notch. Never once was I waiting for a beer. Jessica was my main bartender, but there was three people behind the bar that constantly checked up on me. The food was awesome. I had the san tan philly and loved every bite. The beer was good as well. I had the Hop Shock and whike it wasn't an over-the-top IPA as the name suggests it was quite good.
Based on three visits I would go again, just to sit at the bar. (1,220 characters)

Located in downtown Chandler, I love the atmosphere here. Their beers are not bad, I especially like their seasonals. Of their regular selection I like their IPA, other than that I am not really much of a fan of their other regular taps.

Service is pretty good, sometimes you get a server with an attitude, but usually they are very nice and friendly.

The food is the best part of this place. Their Mexican dishes are quite tasty, their pork is very well seasoned and the right spice level.

This place has a slight Four Peaks vibe, almost like they used Four Peaks as a starting point when designing their concept. However their beer is quaff-able and their food is outstanding. (684 characters)

Stopped in here on a Sunday morning about 1100. They open at 9Am for breakfast/brunch. Cool place, indoor/ bar patio which is a common theme in AZ. Walking the main entrance I see lots of brick, TVS surrounding all walls, kettles and equipment to the back and left. The bar itself is more of a long bar which extends almost the back along the wall which shares the outdoor patio. Big garage like doors open up to the outside. Staff is your AZ blonde erving beer, not really knowledgable but hey..cant complain. Selection was about 8 beers, all pretty safe and standard: IPA, Blonde, Hef,Amber. The Hopshock IPA was pretty good. I paid $3.75 for my beer and was very pleased! Growlers to go! (690 characters)

Met up with some old friends for happy hour on a recent trip. Forgot what the beer specials were (pricing), but they were more than fair.

Santan is right in the middle of the revitalized downtown Chandler restaurant and bar district. Partking was a bit of a chore, but living around Boston I'm used to traffice and parking hassles.

Like alot of places in AZ, it's open air and expansive. Was crowded but I sat on the patio and felt like I had alot of room.

Had the sampler and all the beers were solid but not spectacular. Their flagship, the Devil (which I think is sold in cans too) seems like a beer that would be a regular in my fridge. The Hefe was also full of banana-orange goodness.

Staff were all super-friendly and attentive. Tried the slider plate and some other apps, were above average pub grub.

Worth a visit if you're in the East Valley. (857 characters)

Its been a while since I've been, but going to SanTan was a more memorable part of my trip to AZ. I believe they will benefit from their new expansion with gained ability to experiment a bit more. The food was great and so was the service. I hope they stick to their own thing and make room for themselves. I truly wish more craft beers would get into canning these days (as they are easier to travel with and get onto golf courses). Staff explained very well the benefits of doing so. Decent beers, but nothing too exceptional. (528 characters)

SanTan has some good beers and a nice little location in the historic part of CHandler (just watch out for the speed cameras and red light cameras).

The location is great with a lot of seating inside and outside, with the bar area opening to the outside for a good weather experience during winter months.

Food quality was decent, but I was really ticked that I could not get a grilled cheese without the tomato. Why? Apparently it is pre-made, according to my server. Pre-made grilled cheese sandwiches? Hmmm...

Service was friendly, though staff was not very knowledgeable. Most servers and hostesses seemed to be the young college female types, which are popular in beer places for other, obvious reasons. I highly recommend the Hefe-Weizen and stout here, and you can enjoy them in a Sam Adams cloned glass as well. (822 characters)

Very cool place located in what appears to be a historic section of Chandler (as everyone else has made reference to already). They have outdoor seating also and what's really cool is how they utilize the bar. From the outside, on either side of the bar is is seating looking into the bar which really opens things up. When the weather is cooler, they have the heating units outside so you can sit outside at the bar and still be comfortable, nice touch.

On tap at the time was: Hefe Wheat, Epicenter Amber Ale, Hop Shock IPA, a Black IPA, Sex Panther, and Sunspot Gold. They also had three guest taps, a couple of hard ciders, and Epic Brewing - Sour Apple Saison.

I visited this place in the past and both times the food was good, this past time, I had the jalapeño chicken Caesar which was great.

The bartenders were right on top of things and next time I'm in town I'll visit again. Some of their beers are available in a can as well and can be purchased for carry out. (979 characters)

Stopped by and ate lunch on a Thursday afternoon. Fair amount of people there for 1:30.

Started with a sampler. They have 6 house beers and one seasonal. Sampler included the seasonal, which was a pleasant surprise. Many places only do the house beers in their sampler.

Beers were good. No flaws detected. They served the beers at or around the proper serving temp, which is rare in my travels. My wife commented that she liked the dry stout but disliked how 'warm' it was. The hefe had the most banana aroma/taste I have ever had in a hefe. Pale ale and IPA are solid beers. The seasonal was 'blood red IPA' which was nice. DEEP ruby color. I ordered this after I finished my sampler. 12+ oz pour in a 16oz snifter for $5, very reasonable for a 9.5% abv beer.

Food was disappointing. I had a SW chicken sandwich. Not sure what about it made it SW. Wife's club was alright. Noticed a pizza and tacos on someone else's table and both those dishes looked better so if we are in the area again, will definitely try other food.

Overall, good beer. Service was excellent. Definitely would stop by as the beer is more important than the food anyway. Worth a second trip to try some other food as well as drink some good beer. (1,224 characters)

Stopped in here just after lunch. Nice big space with tables down the middle, bar on the right and brewery on the left and back of the room. Atmosphere was hopping even for an early afternoon. People sitting all over the place, inside and out. Service was quite good. I never had to wait for a beer and my server made plenty of small talk with me to pass the down time. Quality was solid across the board. Food was quite good, beers were diverse and in the correct glasses. Selection was just ok. Only seven beers on at the time of my visit, while a good verity they were just ok. I got the pub pretzels since I didn't want anything big and they were really good and hit the spot well. Prices were on par with all of the other places I have visited in the last few days. Overall a decent enough brewpub that I would probably return to if I had some extra time in the area. (872 characters)

A very nice brewpub and a nice selection of beers. The food was pretty good and the service was OK. I felt it could have been a bit better, but in their defense it was pretty packed. That said, the manager, Tom, did take time out of his busy schedule to talk with us and other patrons. He was very friendly and didn't seem to mind all my questions :)

All of their beers are clean and quality made. My personal preference is for a bit more maltiness, but that isn't everyone's preference. Their beers are available at a number of restaurants and bars around town. They are also available in the local grocery stores in a variety pack of cans. (642 characters)

Stop #323 on my world brewery tour.

Located in as-historic-as-you-can-get Chandler AZ. In all fairness, a very nice area and solid choice for a brewpub location.

Visited around 2:30 on a Monday. On the way in, heard the sweet sounds of live Phish "Run Like an Antelope"

Sat at a table in the bar area with the wife and 10 month old. Not much of a crowd at this time of day which is by design for us.

Got the 4 oz sampler with...
Devil's ale - west coast pale ale. Very nice with a citrusy flavor.
Hefe
Epicenter American amber
Hop shock IPA - grapefruit
Sunspot Gold
Gordo Stout - nitrogen, a bit thin on mouthfeel
Count hopula - blood red IPA

The finest rundown of a beer sampler from any brewery I've visited. I did ask about the hop profile on of devil ale. He didn't know and never got back with me.

Big open doors made sitting inside like being outside. The can all their beer in the building.
Not sure I understand their mantra "craft beer for beer drinking."
All beers were solid and worth the stop if you are in the area. (1,041 characters)

Stopped here last Thursday night before picking up family at the Gateway Airport.

Atmosphere was good, very crowded on a early Thursday evening as we were able to get seated within 5 minutes because of our reservation. A patio is available along the perimeter of the building and all tables were occupied due to the lovely October temps. Indoors was loud with the buzz from the full house and the NFL football game. They also had the MLB playoff game on. I never made it up to the bar but it was of decent size in which occupants looked out onto the patio and street. The restaurant side is long and narrow with seating for maybe 150?

Quality of the beers we had was good. I was pleasantly surprised at how smackable the Belgian IPA was. The Negro Nitro was pretty good too. As usual Da Boss sticks with lower hopped brews in which Epicenter filled the bill.

Despite how crowded it was the service was outstanding as the ordering process was timely, consistent, and friendly. I took a couple of growlers in which one is ceramic and without the government label. The shift manager came over and told me he could not fill it in which i promptly presented a typewritten version in which he affixed for me...he must have thought i was an undercover Arizona DLLC agent! Kudos to him for being on top of things!

Selection of beers was decent as i believe they only carry house beers but i maybe wrong...but nonetheless they have a pretty good range of beers for all pallets.

The food was good. Da Boss had the fish tacos and i had the fish and chips. Both were well prepared and tasty.

Overall value was reasonable. We had 5 pints, 2 entrees, and filled 2 growlers for $76...not bad at all! Although SanTan is on the "other side of the world" as we live in north Phoenix, i would definitely go here again if i have reason to be on this side of the Valley of the Sun. (1,866 characters)

I remember when this place first opened. It is a good place to get wings (they are the best) and get a great beer in Chandler and the beer selection is fantastic (the IPA has a bold Citrus taste). The service is better than you would expect and the prices are very good. (270 characters)

Stopped by here the morning after the Strong beer festival. I live in Michigan, so what could be better then sitting outside having breakfast with good beer during the month of february. The staff here were very attentive and willing to answer guestions about their beer and the brewery. Nice open air feeling inside the bar due to the see through bar area. Solid tasting beers. The breakfast event was food made with beer. The food could not have been better. Very clean and well maintained. I will be back whenever I visit the Phoenix area. Big thanks to all at this fine brewery. (582 characters)

I went in for lunch again today. This makes the third time i have been there. I didnt want to reveiw on just one visit as it could be skewed either way, good or bad, and i wanted a fair review.

Again, as each time before, i sat at the bar where Brian was bartending. I had some awesome cheese stick things off the appetizer menu for lunch, cant remember what they were called, but they were great, like beer battered potato skin cheese stick things... lovely.

I washed it down with an "18 oz" pint of obscura stout. Although i feel this beer should be renamed as a porter (see my review) it was lovely as well.

The entire staff i had contact with was nice and helpful. the place was clean.

On tap they had 7 ( i think) of their own brews, one from papago, one from breckenridge, and something else raspberry i didnt take much notice of.

This is pretty much a brewery before bar.. highlighting their own brews first and foremost, which is quite likely why i like it so much. It has a hometown feel about it while being pretty big and airy.

Several TVs, and they say plans to have a double sided bar adjacent to an outdoor patio really soon.. that will be great for spring, cant wait.

I will definitely be back over and over.. (1,237 characters)

This is the closest brew pub to our house about 2 miles away so I wanted to try it to taste one of their seasonal beers. My wife and I went in the afternoon to catch the end of the Georgia South Carolina football game. The waitress was very helpful. I ordered a interesting nitrogenized version of their normal Devil's ale and she suggested I get a taster of the normal version so I could compare. Also, they were nice about letting us take up two small two person tables so we could watch the game both sitting on the same side.

Beer was hoppy. The one with nitrogen was smoother with less of a bite from the hops. Nice glasses, nice atmosphere. I like the idea of going to a local brew pub to take part in the craft beer movement. I like being able to try their seasonal varieties on tap. (791 characters)

Been here a number of times and once again to visit friends in Chandler last week. Solid beer and food. I had the negro nitron and a seasonal wheat with pineapple-like flavors. Both great and I wished I had more time to enjoy the full beer list. It was hot but they have misters pumping hard on the patio surrounding the building to keep you reasonably cool. Worth a visit if you are in the area. It's a rather large place that looks to have been a bank in the past due to the huge vault in one corner. Great atmosphere and a good restaurant as well. (550 characters)

Great spot with a bunch of beers on tap. Lots of different styles available. They tout their beers as "southwestern style" or something if that nature. I took this to mean a bit on the watery side. Santan has come into its own. Their new beer and special releases are setting a new pace for the brewery. Since they opened the production facility they have space to dabble in new styles and have been consistently great. I used to settle on going to santan but I know look forward to it. Their flagship line is solid. Their food is way above normal pub fare. (359 characters)
