Not sure if this was a fresh batch or a vintage that was on tap at the Brew Works today. This beer poured out as a clear lookin copper color. There is a white head on top with a good lacing and retention. The smell of the beer has a good amount of spice on the nose. The taste is also spicy, the cardamom really shines bright in this beer the finish is like a soft wheat ale. The mouthfeel is light bodied, sessionable and clean. Overall this beer is decent, glad I got to try it.

On tap at the BBW Brew Pub.

Poured a deeper amber color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of smoke, spices, earthy, raisins, vanilla, oak, and fruity. Tastes of vanilla, ligtht wood, candi sugar, caramel, and light spices. Lacing left on the glass.

Sampled at Bethlehem Brew Works on Friday 11th February, 2006.

Like the other specials on that night, this was served in one of those hefty glass Goblets that BBW tends to use for its seasonals. Golden-orange color with a good sized white head that produced some nice lacing. The head did not last too long but it never quite disappeared completely. Nose is very appealing, JuicyFruit like bubblegum sweetness in the aromas and entrance to that taste profile Yet there was a light farmyard aspect to this one, toasted malts and some freshly baked bread warmth too. Hints of wood and some herbal spices. Light body that had a sturdy skeleton coupled with soft carbonation made for a very drinkable brew that was very enjoyable.

I tried this because it was listed as a special and I had already tried the other regular brews. I was also amused at the fact that it had the same name as an old Alesmith brew from California too. A nice Belgian Pale Ale at a mid-range strength and with enough fruity and spicy aspects to make this one a potential session beer.

Good stuff!

From notes: One of my all-times favas at brewworks, I was very glad to see them brew this one again after they turned it into the twisted monk, last time. Anyways. Fiery copper with a small off-white head that leaves a tiny bit of lacing in the tulip glass. Aroma is funky and spicy with some real nice "apple/cherry pie" sory of cinnamon, cardamom, spice notes. Taste is bready and malty with some funky floral hops and the already mentioned spices blending nicely. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and drinkability is very good. Drinkers should note that the latest batch of this brew (early 2005) was ages better than past versions according to everyone i've talked to...

The beer pours a gold color with a 1/4" offwhite head that quickly fades to lacing. The aroma is great. It has a grainy pale scent that is fruity and sweet with Belgian candy sugars and yeast. The taste is great as well. It is full of flavor. It has a pale malt flavor with some light crystal malts as well. It has a sweet candy sugar taste as well as oak chip notes and a slightly tart finish. The mouthfeel is good. It is a medium bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a good Belgian beer. They really go all out with the candy sugar and oak chips; a good drinker.

Grabbed a glass of this brew with lunch on Saturday. The beer is served chilled and in a tulip glass. The beer is clear copper with ruby tints and a light surface layer of tightly packed eggshell white head. Aroma is mild with some toffee and fruity pear and apple scents. I also detect some cloves and biscuity yeast hits. First sip reveals an average body with small fizzy carbonation. Flavor is fruity and similar to nose with pears and berries dominating but I also find a bit of grassy hops on the finish. Overall the beer is smooth and well made a little sweet though. Rather nice.

I bought a growler at the Brew Works last night, came home, had some pizza, then had a go at the Monk.

Orange, copper color beer with little head on the first one. I was able to coax about a finger's head out of the second one by pouring a little more vigorously. I smelled pine needles and wet wood and tasted pine needles and wet wood along with sweet maltiness and a little hop fruitiness.

Mouthfeel was sweet and coating; similiar to half and half. Overall drinkability had to good. I had no trouble finishing the growler.

A very nice Belgian-style brew by this Lehigh Valley staple. It seems to me that everytime thay brew a different Belgian brew, it gets better and better. The brew offers alot of sweet and spicey aroma at the nose and drinks very similarly. This is one of the more smooth Belgian brews I have had in quite some time. Definately worth a try if it is being offered at the time. Prost!
