Poured into a Dogfish Spiegelau glass. No freshness date.

A- Pours a reddish dark amber color with a 1/2 inch off-white head that retains well before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a half sheet of surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves a jagged ring behind.

S- Alcohol and some sweet malt that makes for a barleywine-like aroma.

T- Very boozy with some more of that sweet malt trying to balance things out, but it just doesn't work. I don't even get the IPA side of this as all I'm tasting is alcohol and malt.

M- Sharp and hot from the booze with medium carbonation and a body leaning toward the fuller side.

O- Way too hot. This is not an IPA, it's a barleywine and one that's gone wrong at that. Very little character and way too much alcohol. This is the first beer I've had from this brewery and it's a rough introduction.

Poured into a pint glass, far clearer and more golden than expected for a "triple" IPA. A thick white head was fairly quick to fade but left quite a bit of lacing.

Smelled of hops, hops, grapefruit, hops, citrus, hops ALCOHOL and hops.

The bite of the first sip is the hops but the burn that follows is the booze highlighting the malt. Amazingly the grapefruit and other citrus flavors seem to survive this and come through pretty well. The finish is sweet malt and hot alcohol while the hops lay waste to all.

The beer is thinner than I expected and the carbonation a little too pronounced but overall this is a very nice, very big beer. At 11.5%, you can feel it before the first glass is gone.
