AGED REVIEW
1 year old bottle aged at basement temperature.

The beer pours out nigh black with two fists' worth of overflowing ice-cream-float sudsy head, making an emergency sink dash necessary. Insane spiderwebs of lacing remain on the glass. Thicker side of medium body and heavy carbonation that calms back to medium strength in a few minutes, smooth silky body.

It has mutated into a truly delicious semi-sour stout highly reminiscent of Tart Of Darkness, only with much more coffee char backbone and a heavy streak of asian duck sauce on the side. This just happens to be one of those "accidental victories" of cellaring, it's much more interesting than how it tasted fresh.

It smells like a licorice and prune-spiked roasted coffee and soured apple / lemonade blend. It has plenty of roasted char-coffee flavor to stand up to (and evenly match) the medium-light balsamic-vinegar / sweet n' sour sauce flavor with a light granny smith accent; all in a balance that I actually enjoy. I'm definitely going to be grabbing another six pack of this brew later this year to see if this phenomenon is repeatable.

12oz bottle poured into an imperial pint glass

A - Small tan head from a vigorous pour, leaving me with a ring around the edge of the glass. Black/opaque.

S - Rich chocolate, small roastyness. I can also pick out a rich dark caramel tone. Vanilla hiding within.

T - Rich roasted malt flavor, I get that chocolate malt working also. There is a little bitterness to the malt that reminds me of a burnt coffee, a touch unpleasant here.

M - Very viscous. Full bodied, light carbonation, semi-sweet.

O - Big American porter, that rich dark malt smell is incredible. Creamy-dense flavor is great till it gets a little bitter. This beer goes for it all. It's got oil-like color, huge flavor and is a meal to drink. Certainly nearing imperial status.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass. The pour yields a ruby-tinted dark cola color. The thinnest of beige heads rest on top. The aroma is ripe with fresh breads, roasted malts, cocoa beans, dirt. The mouth is a little thin for my liking. There needs to be a bit more depth to this I think. The bubbles are too prominent. There is a lot of chocolate in this beer. Definitely the main player here. Chocolate malt, bitter coffee, grounds, and a bit of alcohol on the back end. This beer is simple and doesn't bring much complexity, but that's okay. A good beer to sip on during a fantasy football draft anyways!

Poured into a snifter on 8/4/12

Pours a darker than medium brown and looks black in the glass. Foam was reluctant to rise at first, but after a higher pour it hit a hair more than a finger's worth. A large swath of bubbles remains as does some strands of lace.

Two words best describe the aroma: simple and good. Dark roasted grains with hints of dusty yeast. Roasted chocolate and cocoa powder. This smells incredibly smooth. Faint dark fruit note. I'd be inclined to call the aroma great, but it gets to be too doughy; really does a number on it.

The taste is more straightforward than the aroma even. It's plenty roasted with bitter coffee and dark chocolate throughout. At first I don't find the flavor and body to be as lush as the aroma was (at least initially), but it does seem to thicken up with warmth. The feel is probably appropriate, especially considering carbonation is on the low side, but I would not complain if it were a smidgen more robust. Some of the dough carries over and starts to wear down on the flavor and my overall ability to enjoy this beer.

There are enough good things about this beer to make it frustrating that the dough notes are as prevalent as they are. Regardless, it's definitely drinkable. As is, however, this is mid-tier, unfortunately.

This express arrives black as coal and delivers a whispy mocha covering of fine foam. A delicious looking porter.

The nose has roasty toasty malt and sweet creme brulee.

Taste begins with intense roast and flavorful coffee followed by a creme brulee, dark gingerbread and molasses finish.

Mouthfeel is rich and full with fine carbonation.

Overall a great offering from O'so brewing. This would lend itself nicely to bourbon barrel aging. I would certainly have this again.
