Style | ABV
American Double / Imperial IPA |  9.60% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
An Imperial or 'Double' India Pale Ale with characteristically intense yet greatly balanced hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. It is deep golden-light amber/copper in color, although the use of the huge amounts of hops may cause a degree of appropriate hop haze. Alcohol strength is high but balanced by the hops and malt profile.

Weathered copper orange in color with a deep haze. Poured with thick, off-white foam that reduced to a sturdy cap. Pungent citrus, pink grapefruit, and pineapple aromas with hints of mint along the way. Sweet caramel malt backbone with a pine hop bite at the end. Medium bodied with soft, expansive carbonation through the middle and a crisp tangy bite near the finish. Intense citrus hop flavors with tangy, minty, herbal bitterness on the edges. A huge wave of sugary sweet maltiness from beginning to end. Finished semi-dryly with a lingering pine hop aftertaste. A nice balance of intense malt and hop character.

Dark reddish amber ale with a thick, ~3 finger off-white head. Excellent retention. Fluffy lacing.

Pine, resin, tropical fruit hop notes; caramel malt, biscuit, and honey.

Pretty sweet and malty, but not stale tasting. Tons of honey, caramel, brown sugar, and biscuit; resin and pine notes the dominant hop flavor. Bitterness is fairly balancing.

Not particularly lively feel; not syrupy, exactly, but just kind of oily and flat.

I'm not sure how fresh the beer is - no date - but it's intensely sweet and malty. Not what I'm looking for in a DIPA.

Appearance: Slightly hazy amber, good head.

Smell: Piney, citrus, caramel.

Taste: Balanced, lots of caramel sweetness, then some interesting fruity hop flavor and bitterness in the finish.

Overall: Even with what I think is a slightly old can, this was a pretty impressive beer. The aroma probably suffered the most with age, but also may have been a little more balanced in taste. I'll have to keep an eye out for the next shipment.
