Style | ABV
American Double / Imperial IPA |  9.60% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
An Imperial or 'Double' India Pale Ale with characteristically intense yet greatly balanced hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. It is deep golden-light amber/copper in color, although the use of the huge amounts of hops may cause a degree of appropriate hop haze. Alcohol strength is high but balanced by the hops and malt profile.

Dark reddish amber ale with a thick, ~3 finger off-white head. Excellent retention. Fluffy lacing.

Pine, resin, tropical fruit hop notes; caramel malt, biscuit, and honey.

Pretty sweet and malty, but not stale tasting. Tons of honey, caramel, brown sugar, and biscuit; resin and pine notes the dominant hop flavor. Bitterness is fairly balancing.

Not particularly lively feel; not syrupy, exactly, but just kind of oily and flat.

I'm not sure how fresh the beer is - no date - but it's intensely sweet and malty. Not what I'm looking for in a DIPA.

12oz can with no date. Pours a dark amber color with one finger of head that had excellent retention. The head eventually settles to a thin cap with massive amounts of lacing being left down the glass during consumption.

Aroma of overripe citrus fruit, pine, and caramel. The aroma is trying to get to that elite level, but in the end it smells like a DIPA of 10 years ago.

Flavor is better as the malt and hops work well together. Nice citrus, tropical fruit, and pine notes. The malt adds some nice sweetness and caramel flavor. Big bitterness in the finish with some alcohol flavor and heat. Big flavor for a big beer.

Full body with a nicely paired carbonation. Despite the bitterness the easy level of carbonation lets the flavors linger on the palate. Maybe a little higher level of bubbles would of satisfied me more.

Good old school type of DIPA that attempts to add some malt flavor and sweetness. The can says "Enjoy Fresh". Well put a damn date on the can then so the consumer will know!

Sampled this at the Great Taste and at the brewpub over Labor Day weekend.

Hazy orange copper color, with a thin layer of sticky foam. Aroma was very grassy, more of an herbal bittering hop nose than any pine or citrus. Flavor was earthy with an intense aspirin bitterness. Some pale malts were there in the aftertaste, but steamrolled by the hop content. I love hops, but this needed more "C" flavoring hops to balance the one dimensional bitterness. It finished dry with a lingering bitter herbal aftertaste. It had a good amount of carbonation and body for a DIPA. The crushing bitterness and drying alcohol made me want to switch to water to rehydrate. Probably won't try this again unless it's a different recipe.

Pours a hazy, dark copper color with a small, white head that leaves bits of lacing.

Smells of bright citrus notes and some pine.

Tastes of big hop notes with a solid malt backbone. Hops lead off with notes of grapefruit, pine, and a bit of tropical fruit. Malts come in and add a good dose of caramel sweetness. Fairly balanced overall. Ends with more hops adding some earthy spiciness.

Mouthfeel is full with a smooth amount of carbonation.

Overall, this is a solid DIPA.

Destihl Hoperation Overload has an extremely thick and lively cream colored head, a fairly opaque gold-orange appearance, and heavy lacing left on the glass. The aroma is predominately of hop resin with a white bread crust background. Taste is also strong on hop oil and pronounced bitterness, but the sweetness from the malts does balance it out. Mouth-feel is heavy and slick, and Destihl Hoperation Overload finishes puckering, not the least bit alcohilic, and nicely drinkable.
