Belgian Pale Ale |  4.90% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
A Belgian-style abbey ale crafted like those that Trappist monks brew for their own session beer. It is light bodied, light in color and relatively lower in alcohol with spicy phenolics and complex fruity esters of cherries, nectarines, peaches and bubblegum with a characteristic slightly tart and dry finish from the Belgian yeast.

Light golden color. Sturdy head remains as a layer of film. Elegant lacing.

Fruity, citric aroma. Mild yeast character. Somewhat spicy. Soft bread in the nose as well.

Gentle bready malt character, light and smooth. Herbal hop spicy. Hint of cloves. Yeasty. Well balanced.

Light bodied. Well carbonated. Smooth thought with a slightly crisp finish.

Nice Belgian session brew. Light in body but enough complexity to excite the palate.

Destihl Abbey's Single has a thick, white, crackly-foamy head, a very hazy, gold-orange appearance, some bubble streams, and a thin lace sheet left behind. The aroma is of pungent, peppery, funky, spiced bread, with possibly a shade of fruit spritz. Taste is of those elements, with a somewhat stronger citrus component, mellow bitterness, sugar, pepper, white bread, and white bread crust. Mouthfeel is medium and prickly from carbonation. Destihl Abbey's Single finishes mostly dry and decently drinkable.

Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of fruits, yeast. Taste is smooth. Some fruits, malts, yeast, going down very quickly. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a great session beer, I could down these all night.

Pours a clear golden color with a frothy white head that little bits of lacing.

Smells of sweet grains and some fruits.

Tastes of the grainy sweetness with a layer of fruits and a little spice. Grainy sweetness leads off with a touch of bread. This gives way to a bit of fruits with pear and apples coming through mostly. A touch of peppery spice comes towards the end. All of the right notes are present, but it comes off a bit light.

Mouthfeel is medium with a smooth amount of carbonation.

Overall, this is okay, but not really worth a look.

Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a light to medium golden amber with a one finger white head with good retention and lacing. Aroma of light stone fruit, Belgian yeast, bready malt, cloves, hint of butter. Flavor follows, with light stone fruit and apple juice, clove, bready malt; finishes with a light hop and clove bitterness with residual fruit flavor. Medium bodied. A nice domestic Belgian pale. Flavor and yeast are spot on. The finish is a bit more bitter and slightly metallic sour than expected, but overall a good Belgian ale that I would buy again.

I picked up a can of Destihl's Abbey's Single a couple weeks ago for $1.99 at Oppermans Cork N Ale. I've only tried one beer from Destihl and this is the first time I've seen them at a beer store and I'm interested to see how this one turns out, so lets see how it goes. No visible canning date. Poured from a 12oz can into a Belgian tulip.

A- The can looks nice, it's got a nice design to and I think it's a little eye catching. It poured a hazy yellow color that took on more of darker golden/orange color when held to the light with three fingers worth of fluffy white head that died down to a thick ring that stayed till the end and it left some sticky lacing behind. This was a pretty nice looking beer, I have no complaints.

S- The aroma starts off with a slightly higher amount of medium sweetness with a fruity aroma being the first to show up and it imparts a nice mixture of stone fruit like aromas with some peach aromas sticking out a little more than the others. Up next comes the Belgian yeast which imparts a typical estery aroma with some light spices and some bready and doughy malts showed up toward the end. This beer had a nice aroma, but it was a little on the light side..

T- The taste seems to be a little similar to the aroma, but it's lighter and not as bright, it starts off with medium amount of sweetness with the malts being the first to show up and they impart the same aspects that they did in the aroma, but this time it's also pretty grainy and it's followed by the Belgian yeast which is a good deal lighter than it was in the aroma with the spices hardly showing up. Up next comes a light fruity flavor that's a little similar to the fruity aspect that I got in the aroma, but it's much lighter. On the finish there's an equal amount of light bitterness and light tartness with a watery grainy malt aftertaste. This was a decent tasting beer, but it was fairly bland and I wish it was more like the aroma.

M- Smooth, pretty crisp, a little prickly, dry on the finish, a little watery, on the thicker side of being light bodied with a high amount of carbonation. The mouthfeel was nice, but i wish it wasn't a little watery.

Overall I thought this was a decent beer and I thought it was a very average example of the style, nothing about the taste really stood out and it left me wanting more and in the end I just wish it was more like the aroma. This beer had ok drinkability, it was smooth, pretty crisp, a little prickly, dry on the finish, a little watery, not too filling, but the taste doesn't do a great job at holding my attention and one is enough for me since the taste doesn't make me want to go back for more. What I like the most about this beer was the appearance, it was a pretty nice looking beer. What I liked the least about this beer was the taste, it was just lacking and I quickly got bored of it. I wouldn't buy this beer again, I don't regret trying it, but it's nothing that I feel the need to come back to. I wouldn't recommend this beer, it's just not a good example of the style. All in all I wasn't impressed with this beer and I wanted more out of it, as a Belgian Pale Ale it was pretty bland. So far this is my least favorite Destihl beer and it's on the lower end of the style as far as I'm concerned. Better luck next time guys, this one needs a little bit of work.
