A: Brilliant golden hue, topped with a fluffy white head. For whatever reason, I poured this into a Delerium Tremens snifter, so the nucleation point is giving it a pretty look.

S + T: I don't get a whole lot of aromatics from the nose. There are some mild citrus scents and a touch of woodiness, but it's really quite tame. The flavour is somewhat mellow, as well--and most certainly for a double IPA. The malts seem a little dominant, and there's a sweetness that is not balanced with the hops. The flavour is not BAD, but somewhat unbalanced and modest. It could shoot more towards an 'American translation on the English IPA without becoming an American IPA,' but I suppose that just wouldn't make any sense. :)

M + D: The body is a little slick; perhaps it is more oily. The carbonation is modest, and has a nice little bite, but given the sweetness of the beer, it's a little 'sticky' and almost candied. I didn't mind it, but I'd probably set my sights on another in the store.

Poured into an imperial nonic a slight hazed beep amber/bronze with a nice one finger sticky crown atop,big doughy,sweetish malt aromas,the hops take a backseat to the big malt,almost barleywine in style to me.Hefty sweetness on the palate,caramel and biscuit malt with some alcohol zip to lend more sweetness,the hops are subdued to me providing a little citric shot.Another sweet bomb of a DIPA,I would say this is even sweeter than most I have had.

12 oz bottle. Pours hazy copper orange with a medium creamy off-white head that goes to a thin film and leaves some lacing.

The aroma is subdued - some resiny hops and alcohol.

The flavor is a little sweet malt with a ton of sharp bitter alcohol. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, I remember this being much better on tap. All I get is bland bitter alcohol.

12 ounce bottle without any sort of dating info.

Pours clear, a warm shade of darker honey amber, medium tan head, that stays and stays, leaving a thicker collar and respectable bits of lacing and sheeting. Piney hop nose. Dense, flavorful pine hop notes on the palate, with additions of lime, gin and grapefruit. Yummy stuff is all I can say...quite worthy DIPA

Poured from a 22 oz into a Duvel tulip. Huge head that dissipated in about a minute, leaving behind a mess of semi-coarse lacing. Light spicy aroma with some tropical fruit. Thick body, very sweet, medium to high carbonation.

And here's the kicker: the flavor is all about rich sweetness, fruit and phenols. This is a tripel, no doubt about it. Sure, it has masses of hops, more of them and of the wrong type than is typical for the style, but it is definitely a Belgian Tripel + American IPA hybrid. I'm not even sure why it is called a Double IPA - maybe to get more sales? It is to the beer's detriment, as the phrase "Double IPA" is leading people to make assumptions and comparisons that are inappropriate.

When judged as a DIPA, it is so-so. It is too sweet, too fruity, too phenolic. As a tripel, it is one of the best American tripels I've had, and the addition of massive American hops really works. I like it.

Amber reddish hue with a light wisp of white head. Great clarity. Pine like hop aroma is fairly prevalent along with a bit of a citrus aroma. The taste is a blend of pine and citrus hops. There's primarily a citrus hop flavor in the fade. Mouth is thick and sticky which is true to style.

L: Amber, very slight haze. 1” fluffy foam head, slight orange tint, foam has fairly small bubbles. Thick ledges of lace cling to the glass.
S: fresh, spicy, floral, herbal, light fruit
T: Starts with light caramel and biscuit supporting fruity, citrusy yeast and hop flavors. The hops are big but are as much about flavor as bitterness.
F: Creamy, very soft in the mouth, medium body, medium carbonation.
O: A nice big beer that you can drink instead of a bourbon or a gin and tonic.

Clear orange and auburn with a thick, persistent off-white head. Lines of lacing left down the glass.

Citrus (lots of orange flesh and skin), sweet caramel and toffee, and alcohol heat combine for a strong, powerful aroma.

High bitterness, mild citrus undertones, bready and sweet (caramel) malts, and warm alcohol burn.

Medium bodied, though oily and with a hot alcohol presence throughout.

Decent and drinkable, but doesn't stand with the best of the bunch.

A: Light copper color, slightly hazy. Pours with half to one finger head that dissipates quickly. Leaves very little lacing in my glass.

S: Lots going on in there. Smells a bit dank and hoppy from the start (maybe some grapefruit fruity as well?), but I also get some bready malts in there.

T: Starts hoppy, and finishes hoppy. There's a milt bready malt throughout the whole taste, but it seems to start with spicy hops (and maybe some really mild sour fruits) and finishes with more earthy bitter hops. Mission's website lists it at 75 IBU, and it tastes at least that. Tastes a bit boozy at 9.25% abv.

M: A bit thicker and slower. A full mouthfeel, which is probably what you want out of a double. Carbonation is very good.

O: Decent brew. If I could get my homebrews this hoppy and light-colored, I'd be ecstatic. That said, the hop-profile just isn't my gig; I'm not a huge fan of the spicy start. Someone out there will love it though.

Copper pour, decent white head to it with above average retention. Aroma was just bitter and alcohol, not much in the way of hop aromatics.

Pretty bitter and heavy malt bill. So uh, where did the flavor hops go? Bittering hops, sure. But maybe they could have done some dry or flavor hopping additions? Or better ones? Plenty of caramel, but if you're looking for a big mouthfeel of hops, citrus, pine etc. . . you're going to have to keep looking.

Haven't been all that impressed with Mission, they seem like so many johnny come lately's with their simple minded ipa's that are all bitterness and not much else.

On at Mad Mex during happy hora, so it didn't kill my pocket book. Drinks nice, just super malty for a DIPA. Definitely not your typical West Coast DIPA. Which actually worked for this beer, usually I like the West Coast DIPA to take the enamel off of my teeth with hops but in this case. I'm alright with a deep orange russet body pouring with a thick beige head, fine even layer lacing. Nose is full of citrus/floral notes very nice expressive finishing hops here. Starts out agressive with citrus/floral notes but as the malts surround the hops the flavor fades into a well balanced high alcohol IPA. Drank pretty effortlessly, was I expecting more hop bitterness and flavor of course, but I wasn't disappointed by it. Mouthfeel is full to medium bodied with a nice flowing carbonation going strong. Overall experience less hops than expected from a West Coast DIPA but it didn't harm the overall enjoyment level this beer had to offer.

A- This beer has a deep bright tarnished copper body with a microbubble swirl of carbonation. There is a beige creamy head that pushes over the glass and holds its ground.

S- The spicy green hops come through during the pour with a slight lime citrus quality to them.

T- The green tangerine hops flavor has a brassy taste to it with a woody green hops finish. There is a sweet malt flavor underneath the hops.

M- The full fizz texture gives a creamy character with a full mouthfeel and no alcohol heat noticed.

O- The full juicy hops are bright and original without much bitterness although the brassy character was a bit off.

Poured a nice cloudy orange with a one finger white head. Quite nice looking, very true to it's style. Scents of wet grass, citrus pith, pineapple, tropical fruit, citrus juice, grapefruit, a hint of grain and some alcohol notes. Very much a DIPA in the nose, with maybe a bit more alcohol than some other notable examples of the style. Quite nice however. Taste starts with bitter citrus pith and pine resin, before moving into grapefruit in the middle, with some faint hints of apricot and tropical fruit. It's not as bitter as many DIPAs, and seems a little low on hops for the style. There is also a bit of alcohol in there, of the rubbing alcohol persuasion. It's not a horrible flavor profile, but I've tasted more complex, more bold, more flavorful DIPAs. Mouthfeel is medium-heavy bodied, moderate in carbonation and with an oily/slick mouthfeel. It's true to style, easy to drink, not much more to say. Overall it's a pretty good DIPA, but it's not fantastic, and there are certainly better examples of West Coast DIPAs out there. I'd have it again, but not over a lot of other DIPAs out there.

A garnet amber brew with a great tan head. It pours clear with a slight fog showing all it's carbonation streaming to the surface. Nice webbing that sticks to the glass and lingers forever.

Juicy fruit gum, tropical fruits and toasty grains... This brew has some great Imperial IPA scents. Personally I like my IIPA's to be punch you in the face bold but this one is super just the same.

Flavor is good but slips even further from the bold mark that I prefer. Pineapple and toasted cereal balance each other and a tart hop bitterness rounds out the package.

The mouthfeel is prickled with a well deserved dose of hop bitterness and an even healthier dose of carbonation. The hops really have a hold on this brew and the finish reflects the bitter cones presence. Not the best IIPA but a damn fine one. So glad I got to check this one out.

A deep orange so thick that it can't be seen through, and sporting a bit of ruddiness in its depth, this beer grows a very light brown head up to about one finger. While the foam it leaves is fairly thin, it does have good retention overall and leaves a good amount of leggy lacing in its wake.
This aroma leans heavily citrus, with orange and grapefruit and perhaps some orange and or lemon rind as well. There's a certain earthy quality to it as well. Malts are ample, giving a note of crust, and it also gets quite yeasty as it warms.
The taste is likewise citrus-forward at first, but the malts come out a bit for very good balance. It gets a raw pithiness into the finish with a bit of leaf as well. Warming up, the yeast character really comes out, and there's almost an herbal quality to the earthiness that unfolds on the back of the tongue. Some resin sits lightly underneath in every sip.
A medium body offers good support but straddles a line, seeming to pass back and forth between feeling a little thin and a bit fuller. It's lightly carbonated, just enough to keep a smooth flow and a light crispness consistently.

22oz bottle. A curiously ironic name for a brewery located so close to a naval shipyard.

This beer pours a clear, medium golden amber hue, with three fingers of densely puffy, somewhat frothy off-white head, which leaves a decently complete band of sky forest lace around the glass as it evenly loses seaworthiness.

It smells of bitter grapefruit flesh, orange cream, lemon pudding, nutty caramel malt, a hint of toffee, pine resin, and a musty herbaceous character that borders on that particular skunky leaf so popular with the kids. You know - hops? The taste is more fruity tartness up front, a sort of pleasantly muddled grapefruit, orange, melon, and lemon-lime, over a somewhat complex nutty, beady caramel maltiness, a mild indistinct spiciness, and a subtle booze edginess.

The carbonation is active, in a neighbourhood watch sort of way, the body medium-heavy in weight, and generally quite smooth, just a wee pique from those imperious hop and booze scoundrels. It finishes on the sweet side, kind of unexpectedly, as the malt holds its position, and the fruity hops shed a portion of their bitterness.

A tasty enough DIPA, the alcohol better integrated than I had been led to believe, but still duly present, like you would expect it to be, right along with the hop and malt overdoses. Not all that hop forward, but that's just when comparing it to its SoCal brethren, and isn't that bad of a thing overall. Indeed worthy of a try, for all we humulus maximus meatheads out there.

Seved cold into an imperial pint glass.

Mission's Shipwrecked is a amber orange color with thick white head and nice sticky lacing.

Aroma is hoppy but not overly citrusy or fresh smelling. It's still pleasant but not especially dry-hopped.

Flavor is nice and bitter with good hop taste. Very strong but not totally out of balance.

Medium bodied and well carbonated.

Overall a solid DIPA.

12 oz. bottle into a 12 oz. Samuel Smith nonic.

Appearance: A red-hued lighter peach color with some copper involved, and a nice frothy fairly bright white head that steadies itself fast to the top of the glass at about 1/4" for the duration.

Smell: A bright, bright aroma of hops and fruit: peaches, strawberry, tangerine, marmalade and jam. Tons of fruit all over the place, as the hops and malt seem to be making a beautiful collision here. A lot to take in, especially as it continues to warm.

Taste: Initially and powerfully sweet, but that dissipates into some nice tropical fruit flavors along with some bright citrus hops via grapefruit and lemon, and it lingers with some wet-hop type of interesting leafy funkiness. It may be too sweet for some, but I'd rather have it this way than an insanely imbalanced assault of hops to cover up the sweetness from the high ABV. Plus the flavors linger for a decent amount of time: a good sign of a strong sipper.

Mouthfeel: This is a fairly thick beer, one would think, but somehow it's not too cloying in the end, and though the initial carbonation level seems like it may make this a little syrupy, there's a nice bunch to the back-end that saves it from being that way.

Drinkability: I can dig this. Again, the sweetness may get some folks, but it's a good sipper over at least an hour in my opinion. Doesn't seem like it's as high ABV as it is to me, but then again, now that I'm done with the bottle, maybe I was wrong. Looking forward to checking out more from Mission, as I was definitely pleased with this.

My first Mission beer. Might as well be one of my favorite styles.

Pretty much your quintessential Double IPA in looks, with a long-lasting, creamy dirty-white head; thick foam sticking to the sides of the glass with the slightest tilt; reddish-copper sunset color; lots of bubbles racing up to meet the undying head.

Ooh...the aroma promises my kind of DIPA: citrusy, candy-like sweetness, generous toffee-like malt backup, pine resin. Pretty full-on "big hoppy beer" type nose, and I'm hoping it impresses the taste buds as much as it does the nostrils...

Lots of impressions on the tongue, that's for sure. Sweet cherries; grapefruit/orange zest; leafy green bitterness; fruit-flavored pipe tobacco; peach; papaya; strongly-steeped herbal tea; pineapple. Bitterness pervades just a smidgen over all else, which is nice, but keeps it a very slow-sipping "whoa, take it easy" kind of beer. Overall fruity sweet, hoppy (of course) and with a little more malt backup than others of this style.

Round and full in the mouth, a creaminess tries to dominate but is held in check by a bubbly carbonated tickle. A bit sticky too, which helps keep that bitter "west coast-type" hoppiness going a long time...

I should have never looked at the overall score here (as of this writing, just a "B") because I've been agonizing about it, like, "what's not to like?" "Do I not know my beer?" "This is great a Double IPA, WTF?" "Are you all nuts?" But whatever, to each their own. Lemme turn that "WTF?" into "FTW!"

Initially I thought this was a so-so dipa, it was much better as this warmed, on tap at The Blue Tusk. Sweeter initially before bitterness builds up. Drying finish. Very fresh. Great thick lace, that slid from the generous retained head. A fun drinking experience.

Mission's Shipwrecked Double IPA pours a surprisingly hazy, almost cloudy, deep-amber orange body beneath a frothy head of off-white. (Perhaps I simply didn't allow the bottle to sit undisturbed for long enough). The head retention is quite good, and it leaves excellent lacing about the glass.

The aroma is soft and smooth, offering up sweetish golden-caramel malt tones threaded through with resinous, gently citrusy (some Simcoe? Amarillo?), piney, and grassy hop notes.

In the mouth it's medium-full and decidedly dextrinous, delivering a creamy-smooth pass across the palate with just a gentle caress from the median carbonation level.

The flavor is as the aroma suggests it will be, but with a backing of solid hop bitterness to keep it in balance. It starts with an almost doughy sweet malt that glistens with drizzled golden caramel; adds to that a delicate bit of yeasty fruitiness; and then dives straight into a hay bail of grassy, leafy, citrusy and floral hop flavors featuring orange, apricot, papaya and a bit of rose. The bitterness rises late mid-palate, and the alcohol adds a flash of peppery spiciness. In the finish the malt sweetness and bitterness slowly fade and rise respectively, eventually balancing amidst lingering notes of malt and hop flavor.

I appreciate that Mission has avoided going for a big juicy hop bomb loaded with all of the raspy edges that citrusy hops can deliver. And they've also stayed away from the pine cone hand grenade! There's a bit of citrus and pine to it, but I find more apricot, papaya, and Fruit Loops than I do pineapple and grapefruit, and I think that gives them a little bit of uniqueness amidst the crowd. And it certainly lends to drinkability. It's a big beer, no doubt, but it doesn't really show beyond the malt and mouthfeel. The alcohol is well cloaked for the most part, and the maltiness balances it superbly. Well rounded. Well hopped. Worth seeking out!

Poured from a 946 mL can. Pours a big three fingers of head on a fairly clear dark straw colored body.
The aroma is pine forest, lemon and tropical fruits. Very nice.
The taste starts with bold pine bitterness, but moves to a mildly sweet pineapple flavor. It finishes with moderate lemon bitterness. Great profile and balance.
The texture is softer with moderate carbonation.
Complex flavor and drinkability make this a winner.

Appearance - Dull golden body that's pretty clear. A little bit of a head and a little bit of lacing. The color of it is kinda dreary.

Smell - Not very aromatic. I had a sniff of a Pliny before sniffing this, though, so that might explain why it smelled like almost nothing. What I did get was some pine hops and a bit of sweetness.

Taste - Dominated by hops. Not very citrusy. Earthy and pine hops with a bit of sweetness from the malt. After that it's all bitterness. Very bitter finish.

Mouthfeel - Medium carbonation and a hefty body. The finish kills it. It's so bitter.

Overall - Hoppy, but in the wrong end to be a good DIPA. No problem drinking it, but it wasn't memorable.

On tap @ The Toronado (San Diego, CA) on 3/22/10. Served in a pint glass.

Pours a clear copper, with a thin covering of bright-white creamy head. There's a moderate richness to the retention and lacing. Decent little look here. The aroma has some hops going on with it, with some floral notes, pine, and some light pine. However this very sweet overall in the nose, with a muddled mix of sticky fruit and malts. Very sweet here...

The taste is the same, with a LOT of deep sweetness to it from tropical fruits and bready caramel character. The hops only really come out in the back, with pine, spice, and a bit of an off-putting earthy grittiness in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a nice firm mouth-filling creaminess to the carbonation. To it's credit, this really isn't showing much alcohol and the feel here is probably the best part of the beer.

Just way too much sweetness here for a DIPA, with more hops needed at the forefront of the profile. I've had a couple of different beers now from Mission and this wasn't one of the better ones.
