Poured from a 22 ounce bottle into an Allagash cervoise glass.

A: Two fingers of tight head. The colour is a brilliant ruddy amber, clear with some bubbles. Very pretty.

S: Fruity hops. Pine resin. Straightforward, but powerful.

T: Not bad! Somewhat of a hop bomb -- very bitter (75 IBU) and initially astringent. However, there is nice balance provided by the malt base and the heavily fruity topnotes. The maintaste is long and full, with an enduring, grapefruity aftertaste.

M: Substantial. A bit of chewy malt. Not as much carbonation as you'd think.

O: I like DIPAs quite a bit, and this is no exception. Very nice beer. Recommended to hop lovers. At times, noticeably strong. Don't let it warm up.

Poured into a snifter.

3.5 A: Moderately hazed light amber color. One finger of creamy beige head. Retention is a touch below average and a short ring of lacing is left.

3.5 S: This smells about the same as their regular IPA. Sugary and citrusy hops in the form of orange, mango, and papaya. Bready yeastiness. Caramel maltiness with a light toastiness. Booze is well hidden.

3.5 T: Sugary hoppiness and citrus mentioned above. Caramel and toasty malts. Bready yeastiness. Less bitter and more sweet than the regular IPA.

3.75 M: Heavier medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Nice creaminess and super smooth.

3.75 D: Pretty good brew. This has a bigger malty component that the regular and it makes it more balanced and smoother.

A-Deep garnet with golden highlights. A thick off-white head slowly reduced to a thin cap and left copious swaths of lace.

S-Deeply rich but muted malt sweetness with some telltale American grown C type hops poking through the malt layer. Touch of alcohol burn finishes this one off.

T-A big and burly malt bruiser with spicy citrus hop notes struggling to make themselves known. Not what I typically look for in a DIPA. Good, yes. Great, no. Warming alcohol makes an appearance in the finish.

M-Medium-heavy body, this one is a quite the heavyweight of DIPA's without being overly sweet or sticky. I like the feel as it makes you feel like you are drinking a beer with pendulous BALLS!

D-I liked it to an extent but the more I drank the more weary I became with it. A decent beer for sure but it simply brings too much for me to enjoy in a DIPA. If this were a RIS I might think differently but it's not so....

Bottle

Thanks for this one, Gordon!

Clear orange and auburn with a thick, persistent off-white head. Lines of lacing left down the glass.

Citrus (lots of orange flesh and skin), sweet caramel and toffee, and alcohol heat combine for a strong, powerful aroma.

High bitterness, mild citrus undertones, bready and sweet (caramel) malts, and warm alcohol burn.

Medium bodied, though oily and with a hot alcohol presence throughout.

Decent and drinkable, but doesn't stand with the best of the bunch.

Deep honey-amber with a hushed soapy top. Hop hazy and standing quite tall in that there pint glass. 3.5

Oily hop aroma with pine needle and grapefruit rind notes. Touch of floral hop, but mostly sweet dankness and honeyed caramel. 3.5

Fruity malts showing some apple-y character whilst the hop attack brings out twiggy pine and juicy grapefruit. Hint of pineapple and leafy floral hops. Not as resinous as the nose, but still pretty oily. Sweet, and not overly bitter. Excellent full flavor and combo balance. 4.0

Smooth and devious. Well-masked strength. Convincingly sessionable sitting in this pint glass. Yowsers. 4.5

Me + a Shipwrecked = one happy kiddo. 4.0

A - Murky cooked apricot, nice off white head, lots of spotty cling lace.

S - Apricot in smell, citrus, malt, juicy.

T - Huge malt, hops are present but not the players.

M - Medium body, good carb, fair balance.

D - Nice to try a different version of it!

Brilliant deep copper with a frothy one inch beige head that slowly dissipates, leaving spotty sheets of lacing.

Bready, toasty, nutty caramel malt dominates the aroma initially, with hints of citrus, resin, and dank cannabis adding complexity. Seems fairly earthy.

More citrusy in flavor, with tangerines and lemons underlying a slightly sweet caramel malt backbone. The finish is fairly bitter and a touch resiny. Tropical flavors of mango and papaya emerge. Acetone emerges as it warms.

Body is a tad full, with moderate carbonation and substantial alcohol warmth.

Pretty rich brew, with enough flavoring hops and malt to counter the rubbish. Somewhat hot, and perhaps too sweet for some palates.

My first Mission beer. Might as well be one of my favorite styles.

Pretty much your quintessential Double IPA in looks, with a long-lasting, creamy dirty-white head; thick foam sticking to the sides of the glass with the slightest tilt; reddish-copper sunset color; lots of bubbles racing up to meet the undying head.

Ooh...the aroma promises my kind of DIPA: citrusy, candy-like sweetness, generous toffee-like malt backup, pine resin. Pretty full-on "big hoppy beer" type nose, and I'm hoping it impresses the taste buds as much as it does the nostrils...

Lots of impressions on the tongue, that's for sure. Sweet cherries; grapefruit/orange zest; leafy green bitterness; fruit-flavored pipe tobacco; peach; papaya; strongly-steeped herbal tea; pineapple. Bitterness pervades just a smidgen over all else, which is nice, but keeps it a very slow-sipping "whoa, take it easy" kind of beer. Overall fruity sweet, hoppy (of course) and with a little more malt backup than others of this style.

Round and full in the mouth, a creaminess tries to dominate but is held in check by a bubbly carbonated tickle. A bit sticky too, which helps keep that bitter "west coast-type" hoppiness going a long time...

I should have never looked at the overall score here (as of this writing, just a "B") because I've been agonizing about it, like, "what's not to like?" "Do I not know my beer?" "This is great a Double IPA, WTF?" "Are you all nuts?" But whatever, to each their own. Lemme turn that "WTF?" into "FTW!"

Look Pours a nice copper color with a 1/2 foam head. Good head retention and a decent amount of lacing as the beer goes down

Smell Fresh hop aromas very nice citrus and piney notes that rush to the forefront, typical of this style

Taste Grapefruit note combined with the sweetness of the malt make give this beer a decent at best flavor. There is a tad bit of bitterness on the back end of the beer and it has a dry finish

Mouthfeel medium body with a decent amount of carbonation. Dry on the palate but it surprising goes down smoothly and the flavors stay consistent throughout

Overall Its a good DIPA and I could enjoy a several in a sitting on a hot day. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys this style but it is not as complex as some others I have had

Served in a CCB snifter.

A: The beer poured a fairly clear amber color, with about a 1/2 finger or so solid white head that retained itself pretty well.

S: Smelled like a fruity, citrusy, cotton candy, without much maltiness at all.

T: This was more on the fruity side than the citrus one, but I did manage to get a tinge of grapefruit, lemongrass, and sugary Jolly Rancher.

M: This was kinda sugary, but I personally didn't find it too offensive. The lacing on the glass was pretty splotchy.

O: This was good, but I expected more from a San Diego brewery.

Pours amber with slight haze, and quickly dissipating tan head. Nose is surprisingly light for a double india pale ale, with overripe fruit and discarded citrus rinds, and then some pine. Dark fruits on the palate, fairly decent malt influence, and then a big does of alcohol heat onto the finish. Aftertaste is long with more overripe fruit and alcohol heat.
