This 1999 version of Le Coq was recommended to me by a well respected beer store owner. I was a bit surprised to find a cork under the silver foil of this 11.2 oz. 9% alc. brew. It poured like motor oil gone bad. Jet black with only a few bubbles found on the surface that quickly disappeared. The aroma is cherry and molasses and reminded me of a port wine. Each sip of this medium bodied beer gets more complex as you drink it. At first all I tasted was burnt coffee, then after a few sips my taste buds settled down to discover cherry, molasses, coffee and a mild alcohol flavor. It feels silky smooth on the tongue and leaves behind a hint of cherry and molasses after each sip.

This is definitly a sipping beer that would go great with steak or a chocolate dessert. There are a host of flavors to be found with every sip.

2009
Pours very oily dark black with an ominous off white head.
Smells like black malt and alcohol.
In the taste, coffee and alcohol.
Molasses, earthy peat, little bitterness is left at this point.
Medium, smooth, may have lost a bit of carbonation that reads on the low-medium scale. Overall, a nice export stout worthy of celebrating.

Nice stubby bottle with label detailing some of the history of the Russian imperial stout style. Claims to be brewed under supervision of the first Russian brewery to produce Russian imperial stout.
Pours very thick, head looks like a thick chocolate mousse. Very dark almost black body.
Chocolate, raisins, Christmas pudding like aromas, maybe a hint of bannana.
Smooth almost velvet like. Coffee, bitter very choclaty, malt loaf like.
Mouth feel is very smooth one moment then overly carbonated the next.
Overall tastes great but seems a little disjointed through the sporadic texture and mouth feel.

(2009 bottle, kept in cellar temps presumably since obtained - drank it Dec 2013)

A: syrupy, black.... mocha head 3/4", thick foam.... head peters out fast.... small sheet of dark cap lingers long.... bunch of medium-sized bubbles

S: funky-sour.... sweet cherry, chocolaty-roasty.... raspberry and confectionery chocolate glaze.... dark caramelized sugars sneak through

T: wowww!... roasty as heck with a strong vinous undercurrent, but not so much fruity or bitter.... borders on sherry, but tempered enough by the malt and roast flavors.... super dry finish as in sweet aftertaste being nil, at first.... later, a sweetish, sherry-like, high-fruity finish - nearly red-wine vinegary

M: beautiful but brief initial silkiness up front, slips over a slightly powdery-roast dust into the supremely dry finish without desiccating... slow and soft release

O: this was absolutely wonderful.... better than the Courage Imp. Stout.... so much more complexity.... likely the best British imperial stout I've come across - what an imperial stout should taste like - tastes like history

This actually has 9 % ABV.
Let’s see 10 years have gone by. Release of 2003!
Poured the blackest liquid I have ever seen, no light could get through and with practically no head.
Aroma of oak, dark fruits, licorice, toffee, earthy hops and coffee. Great, no infection! Let’s go for the treaty then.
Distinguished taste with a strong character. Bold flavor of sweet concentrated toasted malts, lots of licorice, raspberries, definitely molasses all over it, prunes, figs, oak and cherries. Hints of cigars, condiments and shoyu. Not really sour, actually it has an elegant bitterness.
Liquorish body and as smooth as it gets. The beer was completely flat, all carbonation was gone. 9% ABV is completely harmonic and actually well hidden.
Awesome beer. A non-sweet Port Wine would be the closest drink to this brew. Not sure if I won the lottery here, but I am glad I got this release.
