This is a new release from the Hereford Brewery.Just came out this week, and advertised in the local papers, so when I saw a big display at the store, decided to give it a shot.
Poured in a stange, light medium bernstein brown.Head is really good however, thick, fluffy, sticks around for a while. Really nice on the appearance.
Smells distinctly of grass in early spring.Grain, sour apple cider, pear, tart, very musty, but enjoyable. Light florals, like a type of spring flower I can't quite place my finger on. The finish to mustiness is clean, floral, fresh, hint of parsley.Actually as I continue to dig, this beer is quite intricate. As I read, this was read brewed as an alternative to "strong, heavily hopped beers", such as Maibock. This is German springtime in a glass. Im very pleasantly suprised so far.
Flavor is more based on the darker side of the brew.Bread, grain, malt, a nice dusting of spice, black pepper, and the floral hint comes through, but much more subdued than in the aroma. The bitter sharpness in the finish of every sip, combined with the sweeter floral notes in the aroma, really create the perfect German Spring beer.
This doesn't need to be as spiced and intricate as a Belgian Saison, one of my favorite styles, because Germans tend to like more subdued brews displaying balance and drinkability rather than strength and a wide array of flavor. Different people, different preferences.
The spring weather here, is really captured in this beer.Subdued, yet spicy, smooth, and floral. The immense character of a field of wildflowers that a Belgian Saison recalls is not required here, it plays the part to a tee. Fantastic beer, really a great suprise.
