Dropped by The Trappist yesterday, and I sure am glad we decided to add this place to our list. First off, the bar setup is amazing. It is as close to what I can imagine drinking a beer in Belgium would be like. A very classy array of wood and stainless steel, a glass for every Belgian beer you can imagine, and a bottle list to impress all. Our visit was brief, but it was awesome to sit at (the air conditioned) bar and enjoy a nice glass of Cantillon Iris 2007 (draft). We can in hunting for a few bottles, too, but unfortunately left without what we were looking for. This is a excellent place to drink, especially if Belgian beer is your forte. Don't miss it.

I've been aware of this place for some time, so it was nice to get over to Oakland on a recent SF trip and check it out.

The Trappist is located in a cool older area of Oakland - the bar is split into a front/back bar, neither of which was crowded at all (shockingly so) on a Saturday night. They nailed the interior/decor/vibe of a Belgian dark bar probably as well or better than any other place I have ever been in the US.

The front bar area was gorgeous - dark and cozy, with some open air coming in from the streets of Oakland. It looked like the back patio area (also somehow empty) was pretty awesome too.

The beer selection was strong, but not overwhelming in quality. The taplist seemed more focused on classics of Benelux than other 'rare' european and american belge-clones. I had my saison dupont and la trappe quad, and left thrilled to have spent a few hours in such a fabulous place.

Located in Old Town Oakland, this is one of the hidden gems of the bay area. Great atmosphere. Dimly lit with lots of wood and brick. Two bars offering about two dozen beers on tap, mostly Belgian but also a few local brews outside the style. Pretty small inside, it can be cramped at times, but they also have some seating in the back. Service is generally great and the food is surprisingly good. If you're into beer and in Oakland, this is simply a must visit place.

If you're in the Bay Area, a must go.

Rathskeller like feel with lots of dark wood and brick/tile. Small, but there's outdoor seating in the back. Everything was close to perfect. The tap list was a bit small, close to two dozen, but everything was superb. The mix was mostly Belgian styles, but there were a few non Belgians. Super fresh, served in the proper glassware, etc., things that have been pointed out in previous posts. The service was excellent and very friendly. If I had to nitpick, the food selection was limited, portions were small, and it was a bit pricey, albeit well prepared and tasty. But hey, more room for beer. I'd go back in a heartbeat, definitely in the top ten of the places I've been to.
