I've been to some dreadful BevMo's in my life but this wasn't one of them. In general, I've been underwhelmed by the Arizona craft beer scene and very disappointed with the selections in Arizona beer stores (especially AJ's and Whole Foods). Out of all the Scottsdale stores, however, this one definitely takes the cake. I'm sure timing is part of it but I found this store to have the best selection, best service, and freshest craft beers in town. I left AZ without a single gem to brag about but I managed to find ALL of my second tier craft brews here (fresh Myrcenary, fresh Simtra, fresh Mongo, fresh Black Butte). If you're short on time or means for travel then just head to BevMo and mayyybe Total Wines since it's a stone's throw away and has a slightly higher chance of having a gem on the shelves.

Stopped in this place for some hotel beer while we were in Arizona for my cousin's wedding. This was the first place we came across and we weren't looking for much, so gave it a go.

Atmosphere was a large store. Nothing special about it, though no real complaints either. Plenty of local brews to pick from, which was great for me, as I was hoping to find some AleSmith IPA and was in luck. There were bombers and sixers from all the usual suspects as well, so I'd say selection was pretty good. I was also able to pick up a Firestone Walker pint glass.

Overall, not a bad place to pick up some beers, though I can't say how regularly stock rotates or how often they get new things in. As far as a place to grab some stuff for an out of towner, this place will certainly do the trick.

As with all other BevMos.. they have the same selections... nothing new or different comes in very often... My checklist there is repeated as I have tried every beer on their shelves already. Huge selection, but if youre like me, you can try 10 new beers in a weekend. I find it better to go to Total Wine. The coldcase here is extremely average, might as well skip it. This is however the best BevMo in the Phoenix area I have been to as of yet though. This is a great intermediate beer establishment, but the real deal here is the wine selection.

The good: plenty of different kinds of beer, emphasizing imports and micros. Clean. Organized.

The bad: lots of pretty bland beer, and stuff you can find lots of other places. Weak selection in the fridge.

Nothing wrong with BevMo, and maybe in Scottsdale this is about as good as it gets. If going to Papago for botle service is your only other option, I would recommend going to BevMo to get a better price on the beers they both carry. But if you're always on the look for the more esoteric-type beers or you prefer getting singles of seasonal type drinks, you're still going to need to go to Papago or make a trek to Tempe/Mesa.

Beer is on the left side of the store when you walk in. One aisle, both sides. The left side is imported beer nicely organized by country. Right side is US craft brew. Nicely displayed.

The selection is very good [compared to what I am used to]. Store is clean, well lit, and a very good seletion of beer that is nicely organized and displayed. Overall, not much more you can ask for...except for a friendly person to come and ask if you need help. Missing a little TLC.

The prices seemed reasonable. I was on vacation and was shopping for specific brews...so price was not my overriding concern. Wasn't cheap, but I got plenty of beers I was looking for [which was the main point].

BevMo (Beverages and More) simultaneously opened a number of stores in the PHX metro area, including this location at Scottsdale and Shea, one week prior to Thanksgiving. This was timely as each store had 5 bottles of Utopias availible for a very short time, when so many local liquor stores might have just received two bottles.

While wine and liquor is the emphasis, any BA will find it hard not to walk out without finding something to try from a wide selection of imports and crafts.

Service: The staff may know where the beer is located, but do not ask questions about the beer unless you like seeing a deer in the headlight expression.

Plus:
- Online ordering. Set up a free account, select the store nearest you and then place and pay for an order that will be available for pick up in 1-2 hours.
Minus: Do you want your buying tracked?

If a beer is listed as out of stock you can have an email sent to you when it arrives back in stock. Have noticed that they are out of a lot of stock that they had when opening, and still not in after almost a month.

- Coupons: Opening week $10 off a purchase over $40, another three weeks later for $10 on an order over $75. Spend over $250.00 and they give you a 5% off coupon.

- Keg menu of over 100 kegs in a variety of price ranges. I was told that they could get kegs usually available only in CA sent to AZ. That I have to see to believe.

Unfortunately, both times that I have been looking at the beer, I have run across somebody who was looking for a beer listed on the BevMo website. The default menu is for all the beers available so people are thinking a beer ( Moto and Firestone 11) would be at this store, when it is not even distributed in AZ. http://www.bevmo.com/productlist.asp?area=home

Is BevMo the evil empire, aka Wal-Mart, poised to run our local liquor stores out of business? I certainly hope not. While their pricing is comparable to local stores and they may have beers from a lot of breweries they do not carry everything that can be found at other local storesÂ….for now.
