Thought I was buying CEO Stout (regular) on Tap at local tavern on Jan. 29, 2024 and turns out it was Imperial CEO Stout with 9.5% Very smooth and great taste and pleasant aftertaste as well. Helped compliment my beef dinner.

From tasting notes 10/17/17
Had on-tap at Right Brain Brewery in Traverse City, MI

Appearance - Served in a 12oz snifter. Pitch black with very little dark brown where light can penetrate. Mostly barren surface with a fair ring around the edge of the glass. Lacing is good with broken webbing and spotting decorating the glass.

Smell - Aroma is nice; fudgy and fruity with lesser roast.

Taste - Follows the nose. Chocolatey and roasty upfront with a punchy, dark fruit, almost vinous character. Mid-taste brings a bit more roast but the finish is balanced with the aforementioned flavors.

Mouthfeel - Full-bodied with low, tingly carbonation. Nice creaminess with a smooth, easy finish.

Overall - If I didn't know any better I'd swear they found Founders Imperial Stout recipe hidden in some old roll top desk they bought at a garage sale and decided to brew it up. Its that spot on. I love it. I just don't know if I can respect it. 3.75

22 ounce bottle into a snifter. Bottled 8(?)/26/16, had 3/30/17.

Pours a dark brown, opaque and a little oily looking, with a half inch quickly dissipating head and some loose spotty lacing. The smell is medium roast malts, coffee, chocolate, some marshmallow, light vanilla, a little smoke. More coffee and more heavily roasted malts lead the taste, then molasses, caramel, some chocolate, light vanilla. The marshmallow is a little harder to pick out. Smooth, a good body, but a touch on the lighter side, well carbonated.

Lots of coffee, well developed aromas and flavors, a fun one to enjoy.

Amazing Imperial stout, wish it saw more bottle/tap releases. Poured from 22 oz bottle to nonic pint glass. Dark, and on the thicker side. Three fingers of dark, mocha head take it to the lip. Aromas of cocoa, char, coffee, sweet and roasty.
Big flavors of roast coffee right up front smoothed by cocoa. Feel on the tongue is thinner than the pour looks, hut still pretty nice. This and Breakfast Stout would make for an excellent brunch.

$10.99 bottle poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint. I wasn't really impressed with the Belgian CEO, but I've only heard good things about this. Bottled 11/24 and poured 3/29.

This pours pitch black with ruby around the edges. Two-and-a-half soapy, brown head that stays for a surprisingly long time. Only a little lacing is left on the glass. Head isn't as creamy as I'd like from the style, but it looks nice anyway.

This smells fantastic -- like Cocoa Puffs in black coffee. The cocoa goes for days. The sweet cocoa aroma with the bitter roasted coffee is basically perfect. Quite rich and delicious.

On the 'buds, this beer pleases. Like the nose, chocolate and coffee all over the place. Sweet on the front, more bitter on the back end with a very modest alcohol warmth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter dark roast coffee with maybe an essence of cocoa. The thing that hurts this beer a bit is definitely the feel. Imperial CEO Stout is light-to-medium in body with a surprising little tongue scraping of carbonation. In honesty, it drinks more like a 6.5%ish ABV porter rather than an imperial stout.

I definitely recommend this brew to coffee lovers -- it's pretty intense. The chocolate notes only add to the experience. The lacking mouthfeel is almost crippling, but the taste is good enough that it's almost forgiven.

EDIT: Wtf? The last half of the bottle has an entirely different body. The head even looks different/creamy. At the same time, the thicker feel makes the coffee flavor a little less intense, so it sort of evens out. Going from 4.5 taste and 3.5 feel to 4.25 taste to 4 feel. Due to the sudden thickening in the feel, this tastes very similar to Founders Breakfast Stout to me, with just a slightly less intense coffee flavor.

I've had regular, smokey, and barrel aged CEO stout, and this was by far the best one. Slightly less coffee and slightly more chocolaty than the regular, and overall more balanced. The body was silky smooth, almost syrupy. Would definitely recommend.
