The beer is copper with a substantial tan head. the aroma brings a lot of malt, light hop character, a touch of pine. Unadventurous and inconsequential on the palate. Mild hop presence, caramel / biscuit malt character, finishing dry. Nothing wrong here, but indistinguishable and boring. Light to medium in body with appropriate carbonation. Meh...

We crack a bomber, pouring a brew of coppery brown into our Great Lakes pint glasses. It holds a creamy three finger head of cakey, tan colored bubbles. This shows excellent retention. Lacing is geographic and cratered, laying thickly across the glasses. A light haze and healthy amounts of sediment come with the dregs of the bubbles, and carbonation appears to be moderate. The aroma gives notes of fresh grapefruity and nectary hops, fruitiness of peach and red apple, pale and corny grain, lightly toasted caramel malts, chalky yeastiness, soft bubblegum esters, soured lemon juiciness, coiny metallics, creamy lactics, honey sweetness, brown breadiness, cinnamon roll icing, and floral clover. Our first impression is that the flavoring is much, much more bitter than would be expected from that aroma, with the metallics putting forth most of its bite. As we sip, grapefruity hops and general tart citric juiciness, soapy and pine sappy hops, coiny metallics, woody pencil shavings, pith, phenolic plastics, pale and gritty bready graininess, printer paper, soy sauciness, and eucalyptus leafiness start things off. The middle offers a bit of a reprieve from the bitterness, giving softer hints of honey, buttery diacetyls, black pepper warmth, vanilla extract, white sugary booze, and fermented strawberries. The end retorts with heavy caramel and pale graininess, biting soapy and grapefruity hops, leafy resins, dirty earthiness, weedy florals, drying chalkiness, apple cider vinegar, plastics, evergreen needles, and cooked brown sugar sweetness. The aftertaste breathes bitterly of penicillin, boozy heat, resinous grassy bite, piney and citric rind hoppiness, whole wheat graininess, buttery table crackers, grapefruity and orange rind punch, black pepper and dried thyme, lead, lactic acidity, the faintest bubblegum esters coming off those aromatics, and vegetal tomato skin bite. The body is lightly medium, and carbonation is solidly medium. Each sip gives nice slurp, smack, cream, froth, pop, glug, and pull, with nothing really standing out. The mouth is left oily and puckered with heavy astringency. The abv is appropriate, and the beer drinks back decently.
Overall, the best thing about this beer is its strong hoppiness through both the nose and the mouth. With Dead Kettle they seemed to try and pack as much hoppy glory into the thing as they could. To that, for your standard American IPA, they succeed. This guy is loaded with bright and grapefruity hops from head to toe, and it’s certainly palpable through each sip. To that point, however, at first it seemed to be overkill, with insane, gooseflesh-inducing pucker and chill. You do get used to that, but it may push some drinkers, or those new to the style, away. We always love to support local breweries, and are happy to have had a chance to try this average, but flavorful beverage.

Smell was great, had a citrus-like grapefruity scent, slightly tangy and bitter... typical, classic IPA
Taste was a bit off-putting. I mean, I did expect orange and lemon zest, with some grapefruit, as I was told beforehand, but it just seemed dry and like there really wasn't any malt behind it. Don't get me wrong, I still powered through it like a champ, but it just didn't really finish like I expected. It was a boring, typical, dry IPA.
Mouthfeel was thin. Sad to say, the head tasted better than the first sip. I'm willing to put my experience towards an old bottle.
Overall: I think I just expected more from Right Brain going into the bomber. I'm waiting for my next trip to the brewery for a fresh sample (Hard thing is, every time I go, I skip it b/c of my first experience... and the awesome selection of other beers!).

Got the bottom of this bomber poured in and forgot to slow it down before the yeast came out, but it did add a little bitterness where mostly a malt bomb was taking place. Maybe not that bad, but the scales certainly tip toward malty. Amber and translucent, recently obscured by floating yeast but still a purely sophisticated head. Piney in the nose, little else. Finishes tidy and neat, not overly dry and not over sweet either.
