22 ounce bottle into snifter, no bottle dating. Pours dense pitch black color with a 1 finger dense dark tan head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, coffee, char, toast, smoke, toffee, dark bread, light vanilla, light floral, and roasted earthiness. Nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, roasted malt, cocoa, char, coffee, smoke, toast, toffee, dark bread, light vanilla, and roasted earthiness. Sizable roasted/char bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, roasted malt, cocoa, char, coffee, smoke, toast, dark bread, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Nice balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt flavors; with a solid malt/bitterness balance and minimal cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a very creamy, slick, and lightly chalky mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is well hidden with only a small warming present after the finish. Overall this is a pretty good imperial stout. Good complexity of dark/roasted malt flavors; but very a very slow sipper due to intense roasted/charred malt/bitterness. A fairly enjoyable offering, best enjoyed very slowly.

Thanks to GRG1313 for sharing this one at his tasting.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Foamy streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, and char aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa and char flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is an above average beer that is drinkable but the flavors are a bit too roasty in my opinion.

A- Tried on tap at RBB it appears black with a finger of mocha colored head. Head dissipates down to a thin crown and leaves minimal lacing.

S- Tons of roasted coffee lends a bitterness to the aroma. Some caramel malts and sugar also. Smells pretty much like what I expected.

T- Roasted and bitter flavors, a bit smokey as well. Pretty one dimensional but it's relatively solid for the style.

M- Nice and creamy but a bit thinner than I expected.

D- The 10% is hidden pretty well. It never came through in the smell or taste. This definitely helps its drinkability. If you like roasted beers it's definitely worth a try.

Bought the beer at RBB in Traverse City. MI. Served 12 oz in a small snifter.

Appearance - It frankly looked pretty darn delicious. Great lacing.

Smell - All I could really smell was chocolate and dark roasted malt. Again, pretty decent.

Taste - It was really darn bitter. Semi-sweet and chocolaty at the beginning, but the aftertaste was horribly bitter and gritty.

Mouthfeel - Thick, weighty. Good!

Drinkability - I wouldn't have more than one of these a night.

Side note: the bartenders were excessively rude - not sure what provoked that but it definitely hurt the overall experience. Too impatient to let me read the lengthy descriptions they provided for each beer.

Notes from 3/21

Fat Lad Russian Imperial Oatmeal Stout

Pours a midnight black with one finger of brown head which dissipates soon after the pour. The lacing is very nice...overall an excellent look.

There is a dark malty smell with a little pine. A harder sniff presents a bit of booze.

There is a lot of dark malts up front which seems to be a bit heavy. The sense of oatmeal is there with a touch of chocolate and vanilla. The bitterness at the end is a touch too much as it presents some chalkiness and unpleasant bitterness. The alcohol acidity seems to be mixing with this bitterness to amplify it.

This beer has a nice creaminess and is medium bodied. The 10% is very hidden.

Fat Lad is very drinkable, especially for a 10%. The heavy malt and bitterness at the end is a bit overwhelming causing me to score the drinkability lower.

This was the best beer I had at Right Brain of the 4 I tried. It apparently won a bronze medal at the 2009 world expo of beer. With this pour, such an award is hard to believe.
