Hawk owl amber that was fermented in handmade Northern Michigan White oak bbls, blended with a a bbl of chocolate stout with fresh blueberries. Oh, and more than welcome lactobacillus.. Yup, it’s sour for the cult following.

Very nice ale. Brought a bomber back from the brewpub to enjoy at home. Poured from bottle to nonic pint glass. Amber colored liquid with a thin cap of off white foam. Aromas of dark bread and fruit, with a little funk and some oak and vanilla. Flavors punch sweet and tart on the tongue, with fruit and bread upfront followed by vanilla, oak, booze, and a tart/sour kick in the tonsils. Nice balance between the whiskey barrel and Brett without tipping too far in either direction.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 1/26/2018. Pours slightly hazy deep orange/copper color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy cream colored head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of lightly tart cherry, lemon, orange, peach, pear, melon, red/green apple, red grape, vanilla, bourbon, coconut, toasted oak, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, and brown bread; with light notes of hay, straw, grass, lacto/musty funk and yeast/oak earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/funky/light acidic yeast, dark/bready malt, and bourbon barrel notes; with good strength. Taste of lightly tart cherry, lemon, orange, peach, pear, melon, red/green apple, red grape, vanilla, bourbon, coconut, toasted oak, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, and brown bread; with light notes of hay, straw, grass, lacto/musty funk and yeast/oak earthiness. Light lactic tartness, herbal bitterness, and bourbon/oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of cherry, lemon, orange, peach, pear, melon, red/green apple, red grape, vanilla, bourbon, coconut, toasted oak, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, brown bread, hay, straw, grass, light funk, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/light acidic yeast, dark/bready malt, and bourbon barrel flavors; with a great malt/bitter/tartness balance, and zero puckering/astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from tart/bitter/spiciness and carbonation. Medium-high carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready, fairly tannic, and lightly acidic balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol for 5.8%, with minimal barrel booze lingering after the finish. Overall this is a delicious barrel aged sour amber ale. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/light acidic yeast, dark/bready malt, and bourbon barrel flavors; very smooth and easy to drink; with the mildy tart/tannic/drying finish, not overly lactic. Really well balanced Brett/Lacto complexity, dark/bready malt, and whiskey barrel presence/integration. A very enjoyable offering, and impressive style example. Not overwhelming on any aspect.
