On tap, Michigan Summer Beerfest 2013. I originally wanted this one just because of the awesome name... Then when I found out it was a saison with basil and cucumber, I had to make sure I got myself a pour. Veiled and smoggy yellow droppin' into the glass with an abrupt, white collar that takes its place at the edge of the beer. It didn't produce the huge and lavish head that many saisons do, but it's still a reasonably good looking beer.

Basil paints the walls, and I can smell the unique spice before I even bring the cup close to my face. Unmistakable poignancy - yep, that's basil alright. The herb gives the beer a kind of "saucy" aspect, sans tomato and garlic of course. Very "green" without going vegetal, if that makes any sense at all. Mild cuke notes come off as more greenery than anything, couple with some Belgian yeast notes of gummy clove and sweet bread. Unique, different, liquid salad.

Dem cukes. The palate picks up on heavier notes of cucumber than detected on the nose, and is bursting with more greens... Cucumber, mild dill seeds, basil, leaves, and grass. It's like the Jolly Green Giant just blew a load between your cheeks here, but in the most elegant and enjoyable way possible. Homoeroticism aside, this thing is busting at the seams with a unique mash-up of vegetable notes and kitchen cabinet spices.

The yeast plays a heavy role again, giving its aid in the form of bread, clove, and perhaps even a faint tartness mid-palate that can't quite be correlated to a specific fruit taste. The basil and spice make a comeback in the finish, leaving your mouth with hints of a garden, some kind of sauce, and a touch of Italian dressing over a leafy salad. No, I'm not just fucking with you. Be creative, dammit. Medium bodied, seemingly thick mouth feel from the yeast with a nice amount of carbonation.

Well, this isn't something you can drink by the growler, mainly because the repeated bashing of spices and herbs and greens will dull your palate and make it beg for something else eventually. But in somewhat smaller service sizes, I'd say even up to a pint, this beer is very enjoyable and supremely unique. I can see why people might not like it, or even hate it. But I happen to love basil, salad, dill, cucumbers, etc... so hell yeah, this stuff was tasty.
