On tap at Pete's Place. Brilliant yellow, very light and clear, almost like the kind of clarity you'd expect from a filtered lager, only this beer is topped with a saison-style head. Creamy, long lasting, with a nice shade of eggshell, it takes its time to reducing and leaves some pretty generous webbings of lace as it slowly makes its way down.
The aroma is heavily gummy; Belgian yeast, mild spices, and a touch of musty wet cardboard are hanging around, too, but the bubble-gum aspect of the yeast is really the dominant character here. At first, the aroma is kind of... meh. Just alright, and nothing more. I kept thinking it was gonna grow on me over time - unfortunately it never did.
Coriander and clove spices are more discernible on the palate, rather than just random spice, and the gum flavored yeast is as strong as ever. Lots of out-of-place musk, and a bunch of lemon-lime zest inch their way into the mix, along with maybe a hint of white pepper. There are a few different things going on here, but the harmonious union isn't happening like it should.
The first half of the glass was just okay... The latter half, with a little warmth, unfortunately became a little more peppery, phenolic, and medicinal, with a writhing, pseudo-alcoholic character that is far less than pleasing. Very herbal, but not in the best way - drinkability definitely deterred with time. Light bodied, especially for a saison; crisp and heavily carbonated.
It's a decent beer at best - and I mean at its *very* best. The first half of this beer would score just a little higher. The latter half, lower. So when balanced out, you end up with this beer that's slightly above average. Slightly. The problem for Right Brain is that there are many, MANY better saisons out there. If they want to compete in that market, they need to step it up.
