Enjoyed on tap at Founder's in Westport. Poured into a (much to my dismay) standard 16 oz tumbler. Part of the fun of drinking a bonafide Hefeweizen is admiring how beautiful it looks in its special glass. Oh well.
Appearance - Golden-amber sunshine-like cloudy body, with a pathetic accumulation of a half-finger thick head. This is not the first time I've had beer from this place that seemed under-carbonated for the style. I wonder if they have tap issues. Head is bright white and what's left of it (I guess it might have sat at the bar for a few minutes) retains a lacy film across the top of the liquid. All that being said, other reviews seem less than impressed with the head, so perhaps it's the beer, and not the bar.
Smell - Predominant characteristic is fruity, banana-like phenols. Some hints of mild spice as well, and then the base of bready wheat comes peeking through on the finish. A bit unbalanced and sweet for my taste--I really like the wheat to shine on this style, with the other flavor profiles adding complexity in the background.
Taste - Less of the banana characteristics than the smell, which was close to overpowering. Now, some of the other elements, like clove, nutmeg, vanilla and the wheat are more in the forefront. So far, the taste has been the best part of this beer--I guess if you're going to get something right, the taste is a good place to start.
Mouthfeel - Low carbonation, with body that is on the light side of medium. Clean finish with no lingering aftertaste. Moderately refreshing.
Overall, this beer makes me think of why you don't see a ton of American-brewed beers in the true Hefe style. There are so many top-of-class versions from Germany that I imagine it's hard to break into that segment. There are about five German Hefeweizens that I would gladly drink ahead of EOS.

T. Lot of banana. Earthy. Grainy wheat. Sugary malt.
M. Light and clean. Spicey, clove after taste.
O. Fantastic hef! One of the best I've had. Very pronounced flavors. Don't you dare put a lemon wedge and in this beer.
