On handpull at the Deli.

A: A beautiful study in contrasts. The porter is pitch black. The head is white and creamy-looking, lacing nicely in strata as I sip through it. One final plus, this porter was served as a perfect near room tempature, well done Z Bar for that one.

S: The porter's nose is sweet - chocolate and cocoa coming through nicely. Darker malts follow, the roasted flavors adding bitterness.

T: The chocolate element, a combination of milk chocolate and cocoa, is incredibly flavorful - sweet without much residual bitterness. The body is, though, rather thin, almost like the nitro has sapped some of the fullness that the normal CO2 version holds. The good news is that the flavors, while they linger, are strong and very enjoyable. The thinness leaves only a residual roasted bitterness on the back end.

M: Creamy initially, the body is quick to disappear - a little too thin. The flavors, while there, don't have the staying power that they should. If given a choice, take the C02 version of this porter - it is delicious.

Had on tap in pint glass at brew pub.

Appearance – A dark colored brew. Not pitch black, but just a few shades below it. It has a billowy off white head which slowly fades after time.

Smell – Roasted woody malt, cocoa and a bit of nut are present. Some hop and a bit of carmel work their way in toward the end of the aroma.

Taste – Coffee with a slight amount of nuttiness. A sweetened chocolate and a bit of caramel work their way in with a bit of bready maltiness toward the end.

Mouthfeel –The creaminess in the mouthfeel is a bit more then expected from the appearance. I was expecting something a bit thinner; a nice surprise. The carbonation however was a bit low which took away from the mouthfeel a bit.

Overall – A nice porter and with a bit more carbonation and possibly a bit more bitterness in flavor it would have been quite fantastic.

saw a few signs for the Poe Paddy State Park on the countryside drive to Millheim - may as well go with this one first

a: curved pint glass, deep mahogany brown in color, capped with a nicely retained dark head

s: dry roasty - cocoa powder and dark chocolate bark, full earthy hop profile

m: light-medium carbonation, medium body

t: lots of woody, dry chocolate roasts, nutshell, big earthy hop flavor with a moderate bitterness and roasts lingering in the finish, there's nothing really standout about this beer, but there's lots of character and great balance

d: easy - a high quality porter

served with dinner at the brewpub

Thanks ffejherb for the opportunity.

Pours dark opaque brown. Some ruby glints through at the thinnest margins. Head is a rauchous 3 fingers of chocolate foam that falls quickly to nothing. No lace.
Aroma is bitter chocolate and roasted sweetness.
Flavor is full on malt sweetness, smooth chocolate that gives way to a well balanced mild bitterness. No specific hop character. A light roast not as well, but not as much as in the nose. The finish is lightly bitter and drying.
Medium bodied and creamy, the carbonation having spent itself in the pour.

Definitely an English take on the style. Highly enjoyable and lovely brew.

On tap at Elk Creek on 2/28/09.

A - Deep, dark brown body, bordering black, with a hint of mahogany around the bottom and one-finger frothy light brown head that retained to a thin patch and left fine lacing.

S - Dark roasted malt with a hint of chocolate and coffee as well as a slight nutty maltiness. There is also a suggestion of mild earthy hops.

T - Nice and roasty with plenty of chocolate and coffee flavor. Finishes with a mild earthy bitterness and a slight nutty character.

M - Medium to full-bodied with a robust, somewhat chewy texture. Slight bitterness in the finish with a touch of dryness. Nice round mouthfeel overall.

D - Excellent porter and one of Elk Creek's finest offerings. Poe Paddy Porter features a full, robust flavor with a nice dark roasted character.

On tap at the brewpub. Another geography lesson in a glass, as is the wont of central PA brewers, this fine beer is named after a PA state park.

A-Pours black with a hint of amber and a thin tan head.

S-Roasty with some nice dark chocolate undertones and a nice earthy hop bite in the background.

T-I have been really enjoying porters this winter and this one is close to the top. A rich roasted malt throughout with coffee and bittersweet chocolate, finishing with an almost burnt coffee taste as the hops kick in. Very complex for the style.

M-Medium bodied with good carbonation.

D-Well this beer is quite enjoyable to session.

On tap the brewpub on 6/7/08.

Pours black (bit of garnet around the bottom) with a thin head of creamy mocha colored foam. The aroma is a nose tingling mix of roasted chocolate malts, coffee, and toffee malts that gives off a nice scent of both roast and sweetness that bounch off each other perfectly.

The taste is as lively as the aroma. Layers of chocolate and toffee intermingle with solid notes of roast. There is even a bit of a hop profile in the backend that lets things end with some punch. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a creamy carbonation and easy feel.

Wow! Another top notch dark beer from the Elk Creek with a dynamite flavor profile and fantastic drinkibility. Between this and the Big Trout, I think that they've pretty much got their dark beers covered here. I can't wait to see what they do next.

A-Nearly black color with a deep clear brown color along the edges. A thick off-white head that retains nicely.

S-Chocolate sweetness with nice roasty malts supporting. A lovely beer to sniff.

T-Nice bitter roasty with underlying sweetness. A very solid beer. This is a tasty brew.

M-Thick and rich with plenty to chew on. A pleasure.

D-A treat. IMHO the best beer on tap (so far) at Elk Creek. This is a solid example of an American Porter.
