Malt Bomb, Roasted, Bold, Coffee

Even small pub breweries are doling out bombers of hefty brews to appease the uber beer geeks. Tail Dragger is one of those beers. Its massive maltiness comes with suggestions of espresso and buckwheat honey. The alcohol is noticeable, and roasted grain and dark fruit flavors abound. This semi-dry, black brew ends up being pretty damn drinkable. If their brewer is wielding this kind of brewing prowess then they deserve a visit.

From a 650 ml. bottle. Sampled on June 29, 2015.

The pour is black with a tan head that starts full and settles down to a ring around the glass. Opaque.

The aroma is instantly sweet and musty at the same time. I pick up coffee, a little dark fruit or more precisely fig.

The body is bold.

A sweet start in the flavor and a lingering earthy bitterness to finish. Very little booze in the taste for a 9% beer. (414 characters)

Served on cask in a 10 oz chalice glass

Appearance – Served a nearly pitch black color with a brown hinted foam head. The head did not have much retention, but gave way to some nice lacing.

Smell – A bitter roasted cocoa flavor is the most prevalent. There are notes of roasted malt and some coffee as well. The smell is dark, roasty, and bitter for the most part, but there is also an ever so light caramel aroma that becomes evident toward the end of the nose which brings a nice touch to the finish.

Taste – The taste is very similar to the nose. Its bitter chocolate and coffee with a nice roasted malt flavor. It is dark and dry with very little sweetness at first. As the taste advances it softens a bit; giving way to some sweeter more smooth malt flavors. While there is some sweetness, the taste stays relatively dry for the most part, with the maltiness giving it a wonderful flavor and nice finish.

Mouthfeel – The body is very creamy and smooth for the most part. Its lower carbonation level, due to being on cask, and its smooth malt flavor that develop during the taste, make it very pleasurable on the tongue as well and quite easy to drink.

Overall – This is a nice drier Imperial stout. Dry, smooth and easy to drink. One that is well worth a try if you have the chance. (1,313 characters)
