To update an earlier post, the Saison Dupont is now the Avec. This bar is everything you have wanted in a gourmet beer pub in the South. They are the BSP in a smaller venue. Admittedly, Athens is a burgeoning beer crowd and they might only be ready to handle a Trapeze and not a BSP but it will do well as long as I am in town. This bar had 24 taps and 240 bottles to start and has continued to grow as they purchased the neighboring coffee house and put taps in there also. Eric and Mike are great guys and know their beer. Be sure to check this out if you are in Athens. Aroma's is the ONLY other bar in Athens worth checking out if you are a beer advocate and, frankly, if you have been to Trapeze you could skip Aroma's. DO NOT GO TO THE GLOBE...IT SUCKS!! Enjoy, from all of us in Athens to all of you who visit. We know our beer and love it, come enjoy it with us!

Let's not forget what another has already written: served in proper glassware (70% efficient at this)!!!

I thought this bar really had their act together. Service was great even though it was jam packed when I was there. Beer selection is off the charts, Belgian style ales on tap were amazing, Chimay on tap was ethereal, unreal. German, English beers too. Big list of American Belgians as well. Had cask conditioned ale there last week, loose cannon, that was bonkers. Unless you are a coors light drinker you need to make it over to Trappeze. One other thing is that all the beers were really performing well, they deliver the beer to the glass(the right glass too) in perfect condition. I heard they have glycol lines. I got drug over there from my monthly trip to Atlanta and want to go back next month.

I love this pub. It is the absolute best place in Athens and the surrounding area for good beer. Thankfully it also has really good food, it's easy to convince girlfriends or others to join you if it has a tap listing you want to try.

The draft beers are numerous (20+) and frequently varying, the website is updated bi-weekly to let you know what's new. Prices are very manageable, 1/2 pours of most beers means more tries for less money.

I cannot recommend this restaurant enough. Great pub atmosphere with an even better drink selection.

I had to rate this place and I don't do ratings generally
I had been here when the place opened 5 years ago and was wowed then
They have raised the bar and then some since then. The food was top notch and a great value. Draft list exactly what you'd expect from a place rated this highly. The staff is very well trained and knowledgable In short I couldn't find a single chink anywhere. From half pours at lunch to amazing quality delivered at a price on the food menu I just don't know why people go anywhere else in Athens

Trappeze is a beer lover's dream. More taps than you've ever seen and over a hundred bottles to boot. They offer cheese pairings which I really like, and the bartenders are really knowledgeable. You can tell they love their jobs. They also will give you the correct glass that your beer should be served in, which is pretty cool.

It's a really nice atmosphere, just kind of quiet and low key but still fun. It's a really nice reprieve from all the crowded bars in Athens. It's the perfect place to just sit and have a drink. They play some great music there, too.

What can I say that hasn't been said already? I'm amazed every time I pass through Athens and stop by Trappeze. On the cutting edge of beer without one single ounce of pretention. If I ever decide to open another bar, I'm going to ask Eric to be my partner. Trappeze is everything you can ask for in a bar and so much more. I own a bar in Jacksonville and words can not express the level of effort and work behind the scenes that must go into Trappeze to make it one of the best bars in the world.

My wife and I made a overnight to Athens to do some Pub Crawlin', With Trappeze being the #1 on our list. We arrived at Trappeze at around 6:00 and when we walked into the place, I was in awe, me being from a small town and never been to a place like Trappeze. The place was slightly crowded but not overbearing. We were met immediately by the waitress and the fun began. Her knowledge of the beers was fantastic. My wife told what kind of taste she was wanting to try and she brought her back a few samples of what she thought my wife would like. My wife is a dedicated Miller Lite drinker but not on this night. She learned more about how good real beer can be in the few hours we were there. The waitress was fantastic, the beer choices were unbelieveable, and we will surely be back.

An absolute jewel for great beer in Athens. Very knowledgeable staff combined with a vast selection. Their kitchen staff does a very good job as well. Always a great place for fine beer and great food in Athens. They always have at least 12 different craft brews on tap, and no telling how many in bottles. One of my favorites.

I had heard such great things about Trappeze and had always wanted to visit. I finally had an opportunity over the Christmas break and drove over to Athens from Atlanta.

The bar and restaurant were very cozy and the service was by far the best we have ever experienced at any noteable beer bar.

We were offered tastes of Terrapin's newest brew and some Christmas offerings from Belgium. My Wife was delighted to have a chance to try the beers before making her selection.

We did have lunch and the food was tasty and well prepared. My Wife was very happy with the vegetarian selection she ordered.

The server who I think must have been an owner signed us up for an email service to let us know about future beer dinners.

I love Brick Store Pub, but Trappeze is just as good if not better.

5 Stars!!!

Heck Yes! This place likes to talk beer, and invites anyone in to try something they've never tasted before. I am itching to try the food, but until then, the selection changes constantly.

Like The Distillery in Savannah, this bar likes to switch out its draft-arsenal per week, but the selections between these two bars is very different.

Whereas The Distillery sticks to "seasonal" selections, mostly, the Trappeze might just have anything they darn well want at anytime of the year. A look at the website shows everything on tap and in bottles.

If in Athens, this is the bar to visit.

Without a doubt, Athens' premier beer pub, and quite possibly one of the best in the country. Yeah, I said it. My review is long overdue, having been fortunate enough to be among the few invited to the preview opening back in December of last year.

The main bar area/room consists of wooden booths lining the front windows and a long L-shaped bar featuring 31 taps and one beer engine tap for casks. There are roughly 4-5 coolers in this area as well filled with bottles, some behind the bar and some at the ends of the bar on both sides. Directly opposite the long side of the bar is a middle section/patio that can be opened to the outside air and serves as a connection to the other side of the pub. There are a few tables and tall chairs scattered in this area. They have also recently added a few sidewalk tables with metal railings separating them from the pedestrian traffic, which is great for outside lounging.

The other side of the pub is the roomier of the two main areas, featuring a smaller bar with 6 taps, more booths lining the front windows and several longer tables in the middle. This brings the grand tap total to a stellar 38. There are also bottle coolers on this side as well.

The patio area has a large mural of L'Abbey de Notre Dame de Scourmont (Chimay), while both sides feature many great pieces of beer paraphernalia. There is a long blackboard opposite the main bar (look high) with all the draft selections, and a superb menu with lengthy descriptions of the 250+ bottles. The food is top-notch as far as pub food goes, even having a vegetarian entry. Awesome glassware selection, and if it's not always the right brewery, it's nearly always the correct style. Sometimes Fri/Sat night can get a bit crowded, but the adjoining space helps alleviate this tremendously.

Fantastic service, selection, ambiance...hell, just an all-around awe inspiring beer bar. If you love great beer and you haven't been here whilst in Athens, I don't know what's wrong with you. Get there, now! Long live Trappeze!

I am originally from Georgia, went to school at the University of Georgia in Athens, and currently live in Providence, RI. My brother nd I, while attending college, would go to the "Trap" almost everyday after classes to have a beer and to enjoy the wonderful atmosphere. There is always a wonderful selection of beers, and because they are always rotating their selection, there seemed to be something new to try all the time. If you are going to visit Athens, or even be close, visit this wonderful pub!

Went on a day trip to Athens and stopped here for lunch. We sat in the restaurant/coffees shop side. The decor was a lot of beer memorabilia with wood booths. Much to my surprise, they had Bell's Expedition Stout on tap. I lucked out as I got the last of it and it was on the house because it wasn't a full pour (I got about 3/4 of a pint). The food was good. I got a roast beef sandwich on sour dough (beer braised in St. Bernardus) and my wife got a pulled pork sandwich (pork braised in Unibroue Ephemere). The menu contains items made with beer. and the service was excellent. The waitress even knew her beers. This is a must visit bar in Athens.

I've been coming here at least weekly since I discovered it this summer.

Atmosphere - Great atmosphere, especially for a bar in a college town. Never too loud to hold a conversation, even when the restaraunt is packed.

Quality - The best beer available in the state is either on tap, or in the bottles at Trappeze. And your beer will always be served in appropriate glassware.

Service - The bartenders here are top notch. They all really know their beer and are happy to make recommendations, compare notes and chat if the bar isn't too busy. The wait staff for the restaraunt is also very well educated on the beer menu. I've never seen any bartender/server be snobby to a BMC drinker in fact they're always ready to make suggestions. True Beer Advocates if you will.

Selection - Trappeze taps at least 5 new beers a week, all top notch. And their bottle list is exhaustive to say the least.

Food - I would honestly come here to eat pretty often even if I wasn't in to craft beer. I've never had anything on the menu I wouldn't order again, and the prices are very fair.

Value - The place is a great value, delicious and rare beers on tap. The most expensive item on the beer menu hardly ever exceeds $8 for a full pour, and its always something world class. They also offer half pours so you can try more beer.

Overall - I'm seriously going to miss this place when I graduate. Great people serving great beer, plus events with breweries, monthly beer academys, and unbeatable value and selection.

Trappeze has an excellent selection and they are always getting new beers. The wait staff is attentive to the customers as well as exceedingly knowledgeable. They can recommend beers based on your preferences and are more than willing to offer you samples of the many beers they have on tap. Also, as opposed to many places, each beer is served in an appropriate style of glass. The food is good including offerings made from leftovers from the nearby Terrapin brewery. Overall a great experience, and a place I will return to to try many new beers.

My favorite pub in Athens, well, my only pub in Athens. Even though I spent 4-5 years there in the seventies, I'm not there very often now, but try to make Trappeze a frequent stop. If the other pubs are comparable, then they are very good.

Clientele is upscale. Selection is incredible. Don't expect to drink American light beers here. Food menu is good and inexpensive. Try the beef cooked in Chimay.

Staff is very knowledgeable and is intent on assisting in selecting the right beer for you.

Great pub in the middle of the UGA atmosphere. Right next door to a popular concert hall in Athens. On concert nights, expect crowds. Also any later than 9:30 on weekends will be crowded.

Clientele age is varied. College juniors up to senior citizens.

Overalll, a very pleasant experience in downtown Athens GA.

An exceptional beer bar; one of the best I've ever seen (surprisingly enough). The food was great, if pricey, and the service was impeccable. Recommendations were spot-on, knowledge was robust and expansive, and samples were given freely. The selection of glassware particularly pleased me. One of the owners (a brewer himself) mingled with patrons and seemed genuinely pleased to do so. The bottle list is unbelievablely large (including a range of JW Lee Harvest ales dating back twelve years) and the many taps contained nary a bad beer.

Truly worth going out of your way to visit.

My womern & I have mastered the 3-hour-drive (from Charlotte, NC) weekend vacation. We visit Athens at least once a year and it is, without a doubt, one of the best college towns I've spent time in - great food & bars all over an area easily walked.

Trappeze is an excellent pub with amazing draft and bottle selections (check what they've got online), wonderful (bit pricey but so worth it) food, excellent atmosphere & laid back beer-smart staff eager to pour you a sampler & brew-chat.

We always stay at the Foundry Park Inn, free shuttle service drop & pick. Don't forget to visit Terrapin Brewery while in town. Too many good bars & food joints to mention. Well worth the drive.

Stopped in for dinner and a few drinks before a show at the 40 watt on a Tuesday evening. Stellar beer selection with a couple dozen taps. Appreciated that the majority of the taps were filled with local or southeastern breweries. Great mix of taps as well -- strong stouts and DIPAs, pilsners, Belgians, wheats, IPAs, and even a sour ale. All were very reasonably priced and served in appropriate glassware.

Food menu had some great options, including a cheese plate and bread made with Terrapin's spent grain. Really well done pub food, much of which included beer in some way -- beer mustard, beer vinaigrette, beer batter, etc...

Overall a really nice place to grab a bite to eat and enjoy some killer beer. This will certainly be a regular pre-show ritual for us whenever we're in town.

I stopped here while driving around downtown the day before the UGA/Bama game. Had heard great things about this place and when I saw it I had to stop. Very pleasant vibes, pretty small and cozy. I sat at the bar, which wasn't too big but the crowd wasn't either. A few booths were all I noticed. As a UGA fan, it was easy to carry on a conversation with those at the bar. I met a husband and wife from Raleigh who were very kind and passionate about their football. The husband was a Buckeye fan but the wife was a Dawgs fan. I had to remind the husband of OSU's record against the SEC in bowl games, which was a kick for his wife. Great tap selection including a rotating cask beer I believe. They had Storm King on cask when I stopped in. The Stone lineup was there, which I was happy to see. An amazing bottled selection which was well organized alphabetically by beer name rather than brewery. I suppose this makes it a bit easier for those working there. There were way too many beers that I wanted to try but I didn't have the time or money to get to them. I tried the Sun Ray from Terrapin, along with the Pale Ale and Smoked Porter from Stone. It looks like they constantly have great beers on tap, as the handles above the bar made me drool a bit. Not only was the beer selection as good or better than most places I've been (very impressive for the size of the place) but the food was great, too. It's more of a pub than restaurant so they have soups and sandwiches for the most part. I tried the California Turkey and Swiss, which was very tasty. It came with chips and Weihenstephan Honey Mustard, which was very cool to me. They also had a bread on the menu made from Rye and other ingredients from Terrapin beers. The service was very good as well. A nice young lady who kept a smile on her face the whole time I was there. Pints cost a bit more than I'm used to but other than that this is a great new place that I'm glad to have found here in Athens; the price of the beer is easily worth it for the atmosphere and conversation, let alone an unbelievable list of beers to boast. Their menu is very well organized by styles also, a nice touch. I will definitely stop in again soon.

I finally made it to Trapeze after hearing about it from many friends, and boy and I glad!

The atmosphere is cozy and small -- very intimate.

The quality blew me away. While other places will gouge you good for rare and specialty beers, Trapeze features some very fair prices which are all very clearly posted -- something other pubs should do. The bartender even asked me how much I planned on spending, and steered me away from beers that he felt were not worth the high price when there were other cheaper alternates of better quality.

The selection is crazy. At least 15 taps, many of which I have never seen other places, and scores of bottles.

Like I suggested earlier, the value is great at every turn, and the service is spectacular. The bartenders are quick to bring water as well as nice bread with oil and balsamic vinegar - gratis.

I will be back a hundred more times.

The Trappeze Pub (a play off the word Trappist) is located at 269 West Washington Street in Athens, GA. This place is a beer mecca for the southeast United States. A very relaxing place with its terra cotta pot colored walls, green trim, and Belgian & craft beer décor. Plentiful taps line the end of the J-shaped dark wood bar and a marvelous bottle selection backs up the taps. I loved the way the beers are separated out in the sizeable beer menu. Thought was put into seemingly every aspect of the bar. Some of the staff are very knowledgeable about beer and the others seem willing to learn, even if it is from the patrons. The day that my girlfriend and I went (a holiday weekend Sat.), the patrons were of a mixed age earlier in the afternoon (6:30ish) and slowly progressed to a late night college student crowd.
Without a doubt, this is the première place to get beer in Athens, GA. The beer available includes a nice selection of Belgians (incl. Belgian Blonds, Dark Ales, Lambics, and other varieties), German beers, and American / English craft beers. The cider enthusiast can even find a few choice selections. The total beer selection and small touches like the glass rinse trays and proper stemware make this spot one of best in the southeast. Folks from the Atlanta area will understand when I say this is mini-Brick Store. Speaking of Atlanta, this is an excellent destination for that beer day trip (or two) to Athens. The Hilton Garden Inn is six blocks down the street and the best hotel in Athens. The food, a 1-page menu's worth, is very good and many of the dishes are made with beer. Beer and beer prepared food! Check this place out.

This place is great. The bar itself spans the full store lengths including a coffee shop, a sitting area, and the bar. The bar itself is filled with wide selections of beers that cannot be found at any other bar. They also are the only bar in Athens that stocks proper glassware for each style of beer. The staff is polite and knowledgeable, many times offering suggestions based on your personal taste. The coffee shop also expands on the atmosphere with spacious seating, good window views, and of course, coffee/tea.

Best place in Athens for quality beer.

The Trappeze Pub is a rare and wonderful find, if you happen to be travelling through the Athens, GA area. The city and university itself is a larger city with a college feel to it.

The service is incredible and it's quite apparent that the waiters are well versed in different beer styles, serving glasses, brand names, etc.

The selection is second to none as well. Aside from their respectable and up-to-date selection of bottles, they also have at least 16 beers on tap and two beer engines. I've enjoyed a lot of Victory beers on cask, which were served at perfect carbonation and temperature.
