This place in a shopping mall just off of Route 9, the main way into that nice beer destination, Amherst. Its also about 2 minutes from the Hangar (go for the wings) Pretty typical Mass. style liquor depot, wine, booze and beer. Its to the right as you enter, along the wall and stacked up in cases on the floor. Decent selections abound. You will find plenty of BA worthy brew here. Not the awesome quality of the nearby Spirit House. But a decent spot to pick up some tasty offerings. Expect most of the local usuals and a smattering of the standard Belgians, Brits and Germans. No Port Brewing, Lost Abbey, or Alesmith here, go to SH for that

Another Hadley store with a craft selection that seems to go unnoticed, probably because UMASS caters more to the BMC crowd....

They have a pretty impressive selection of craft on the shelves to the right side of the store. It is certainly not a craft orientated staff or store though. Both imports, bombers and craft sixers can be found nicely. The only problem, just like other Hadley stores is that the beer can sit around for a long time and get dusty, I prefer not to buy many hoppy beers in this area. However, this can be a place to find some releases like Nugget Nectar and Founders beers without having to secure a place on a list months ahead of time. Selection covers the basics of MA (Founders, Stone, Flying Dog, Troegs, Victory, Bear Republic, Avery, Cisco, Maine, etc.). Decent fridge selection. Worth stopping in if you have time to kill or are in the area. Prices are on par or sometimes lower than Western Mass averages.

Your typical large liquor store, with isles of Liquor, Wine and a back wall of refrigerators for cold beer. They do have a good selection of your typical BMC beers, and a decent selection of craft beers. Beer and liquor prices are very reasonable. Service is efficient, and friendly. Don't ask them about anything about beers since they are not up to speed on beers. Lines can be long on Friday & Sat nights. Expect to be carded if you look remotely under 40. They do have a high tech age verification system that scan your ID. As noted by other. The clientèle is mostly college students buying cases of cheap beer.

I graduated from UMass Amherst, which is just up the road, so I have a great deal of experience with this place. The selection here is pretty decent. It's not huge, but they have a carefully chosen line-up of some great craft and imported beers. On occasion you can find rarities here, and usually in good quantities. Since this store is patronized mainly by macro drinking college students, the craft section goes largely unnoticed except by a few adventurous people or even fewer beer aficionados. I was there recently and snapped up some year old Oskar Blues Ten Fidy for the normal retail price. Nice little score. This lack of attention can be a double edged sword, however. IPAs tend to sit on the shelves for far longer than they should. I generally don't trust IPAs from this place unless I see a bottled on date. The service is good. I regularly have employees asking me if I need help or whatnot. I have found that they are not very knowledgeable when it comes to the products though (chalk this up to the fact that they are almost all young students hired from UMass). They are very friendly, and can help you out with the latest designer vodka, but not the beer. Most of the products here are very competitively priced or even a bit cheaper than normal retail. As a beer lover, the most impressive aspect of this store to me is the selection of glassware they offer. This is probably the best I've seen in any liquor store to date. They sell glassware for many different beer styles. I have seen pint glasses, tulips, weizen glasses, and other types. Good luck finding that at any other area liquor store. Overall this place is decent. There are a few minor annoyances to deal with, stemming from the fact that this is a college town. If you look under forty, you will always be carded, and police like to camp in the parking lot. I have even been pulled over after leaving here on suspicion of buying underage (and I am not and do not look at all underage). However, these things are outside the control of the store itself. I like to stop in here in conjunction with the other liquor stores in the area and "cross reference" the selections. You can find some hidden gems that way.

Off route 9, Liquors 44 in Hadley is a decent place to purchase beers. The place is huge, many rows of liquor and wine line the aisles. Cold beer is found in the back freezers, and six packs and 22 ounce bottles are to the side out in the open. 12 packs are right near all the room temperature drinks. Like I said the place is big, but, to me at least, it has all the stuff you would find in any liquor store. Sure it does have Western Mass brews, but many of the drinks are typical selections. I will say though, if they have the stuff you are looking for, they most likely have a good bulk of it. Though I was shocked the last time I was there and they did not have People's Pint where it usually is. Service has not really been that particularly noticeable. I have never had anyone come up to me and ask me if I needed any help, even though many people are working in the aisles. The cashiers have never been unfriendly however. If you are on Route 9 visiting friends at the colleges or just traveling, Liquors 44 can be a good spot for your purchases. I would recommend other places first though if you were in the area.
